Diese Studie beschreibt die Entwicklungsschritte in der musikalischen Sprache Arnold Schönbergs während der entscheidenden ersten 15 Jahre seiner kompositorischen Laufbahn. Detaillierte Analysen von achtzehn zentralen Werken dieser Jahre verfolgen seine schöpferische Emanzipation vor dem Hintergrund der gleichzeitigen epochalen Umwälzungen in der bildenden Kunst und der Literatur Mitteleuropas. 1899 hatte Schönberg mit seinem Streichsextett Verklärte Nacht das Fundament für seine Karriere gelegt. In diesem noch in der Nachfolge wagnerscher Leitmotivtechnik komponierten Werk wagte es der 25-jährige Komponist, die Idee der instrumentalen Interpretation eines dichterischen Textes, die bis dahin auf Klavierstücke und sinfonische Werke beschränkt war, auf ein Kammermusikwerk zu übertragen. 1914, als der inzwischen 40-jährige gerade sein erstes Thema aus zwölf nicht wieder aufgegriffenen chromatischen Tönen geschrieben hatte, wurde seine Arbeit für acht Jahre unterbrochen, zunächst durch seinen Dienst im Ersten Weltkrieg, anschließend durch seine angespannte finanzielle Lage, die ihn zwang, seine Arbeitszeit mit Transkriptionen von Werken damals populärer Komponisten zu verbringen. Während der 15-jährigen Zeitspanne zwischen 1899 und 1914 machte Schönberg eine Entwicklung durch, in deren Verlauf er in konsequenter Folge einen Parameter der Musik nach dem anderen neu definierte und so von konventionellen Erwartungen befreite. Inspiration hierfür suchte er nicht zuletzt in den Schwesterkünsten, insbesondere bei Malern und Dichtern, deren parallele Neuerungen denn auch den Einstieg in die fünf Hauptkapitel dieses Buches liefern.

One of the most difficult challenges a music theoretician faces, be it historically, philosophically or in other aspects, is that of correctly and precisely framing the meaning that music has in a specific moment: deducing the “why” and revealing the secret hidden within. The book Pure and Programme Music in the Romanticism, a rigorous and indispensable study to understand music in the period in which music as an expression of feelings, begins to reach the threshold of the sublime –primarily focusing attention on what pure and programme music represent. Both types of music are instrumental, but the difference between them is that the first one, pure music, exists on its own, and for its own sake, establishing an iron-clad alliance with the form. Programme music is inspired by other forms of artistic expression, especially literature, and is indelibly linked with the content. However, halfway between these two types of music, a new one is born: absolute music. This music is the result from the dialectic established between the pure and programme, exactly in the middle of two opposing philosophies, that of Idealism and that of Materialism. All of this context described in this book is what defines the essence of Romantic music but also what allows us to understand the music of the twentieth century and that of today, because the controversy between pure music and programme music has represented, in the history of western musical thought, the turning point that led to the creation of the Gesamtkunstwerk (Total Work of Art) and the relationship between music and film, for example, as well as other artistic expressions.

Das ist eine lebensnahe Einteilung, die z. B. Eltern, deren Kind plötzlich in eine Unruhephase geraten ist, in der sie es nicht wiedererkennen, zeigen kann, dass das etwas ist, was vorübergeht, und vor allem: Dass hier etwas Neues anfängt. Dieser Wandel der Epochen spiegelt sich in wunderbarer Weise in der Kindheits- und Jugendzeichnung, die die Blickweise dieses Buches bestimmt, (gezeigt in vielen farbigen Abbildungen). Daneben bilden auch Tagebücher und die Entwicklung der Handschrift interessante Beispiele.

Composed from essays written from 1869-71, The Birth of Tragedy was first printed in Leipzig in 1872 under the title "Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geiste der Musik”. In 1886, the same publisher printed a new new edition under the new title "Die Geburt der Tragödie oder Griechentum und Pessimismus" with a second preface "Versuch einer Selbstkritik” where Nietzsche criticizes his own work. Both prefaces from these two versions are included here. Here in his first major work, Nietzsche articulates a semi-Hegelian tragic dichotomy of pre-cosmogonic energy underlying all of human struggle made manifest most explicitly in Greek tragedy. For the Greeks understood most clearly the forces which were driving the ethos of their civilization, finding a balance between chaos and order. It is a suspiciously metaphysical description of the origins of human culture from a man who believed it was his purpose as a “world-historical” individual to destroy the lie of the existence of Metaphysics.
