Die europäische Musikwissenschaft, der dieser Band mit einem mitteleuropäischen Schwerpunkt gewidmet ist, wandelte sich in den ersten drei Jahrzehnten des 20. Flankiert werden die Beiträge von übergreifenden Untersuchungen, die sich dem Verhältnis von Musikwissenschaft und Musikjournalismus, der Kategorie der Alten Musik und kulturdarwinistischen Tendenzen im betrachteten Zeitraum widmen. European musical scholarship, to which this volume is dedicated, with a focus on Central Europe, changed in the first three decades of the 20th century from a research area characterised by the work of charismatic academics to an institutionally established academic discipline. The 100th anniversary of the Musicological Seminar at the University of Halle, founded by Hermann Abert, was the inspiration for this book, which widens its view in concentric circles from Halle to Berlin, Göttingen, Wroclaw, Königsberg, Vienna, Prague, Berne, France, Poland, the Soviet Union and Finland. The contributions are accompanied by comprehensive studies dedicated to the relationship between musical scholarship and music journalism, the category of Early Music, and cultural Darwinist tendencies during the period in question.

Thinking with Sound traces the formation of auditory knowledge in the sciences and humanities in the decades around 1900. When the outside world is silent, all sorts of sounds often come to mind: inner voices, snippets of past conversations, imaginary debates, beloved and unloved melodies. What should we make of such sonic companions? Thinking with Sound investigates a period when these and other newly perceived aural phenomena prompted a far-reaching debate. Through case studies from Paris, Vienna, and Berlin, Viktoria Tkaczyk shows that the identification of the auditory cortex in late nineteenth-century neuroanatomy affected numerous academic disciplines across the sciences and humanities. “Thinking with sound” allowed scholars and scientists to bridge the gaps between theoretical and practical knowledge, and between academia and the social, aesthetic, and industrial domains. This book focusses on Russia’s cultural statecraft in dealing with a number of institutional cultural domains such as education, museums and monuments, high arts and sport. It analyses to what extent Russia’s cultural activities abroad have been used for foreign policy purposes, and perceived as having a political dimension. Building on the concept of cultural statecraft, the authors present a broad and nuanced view of how Russia sees the role of culture in its external relations, how this shapes the image of Russia, and the ways in which this cultural statecraft is received by foreign audiences. The expert team of contributors consider: what choices are made in fostering this agenda; how Russian state authorities see the purpose and limits of various cultural instruments; to what extent can the authorities shape these instruments; what domains have received more attention and become more politicised and what fields have remained more autonomous. Er reicht von 1925 bis 1954, ein Jahr vor Handschins Tod, und wird hier erstmals in einer kommentierten Ausgabe vorgelegt, welche die Briefe zwischen 1925 und 1954 umfasst. Die Korrespondenz zwischen Besseler und Handschin spiegelt einerseits unterschiedliche weltanschauliche und politische Positionen vor und nach 1933 und 1945 in Deutschland und der Schweiz, konzentriert sich andererseits auf die vielschichtige teils konträre Interpretation von Quellen von der frühen Mehrstimmigkeit bis ins 15. Jahrhundert. Dabei bieten die Briefe vielfach Autorenkommentare zu den teils noch in ihrem Entstehen begriffenen wissenschaftlichen Publikationen der beiden Protagonisten. Neben einer zeit- und wissenschaftshistorischen Dokumentation entsteht so auch ein Abbild intensiver inhaltlicher Auseinandersetzung. Plastische Modelle, Rundfunkübertragungen, Lehrfilme, bebilderte Geschichtsbücher, Gliederungspläne und Wunschlisten verhandelten, veranschaulichten und verbreiteten dort das Wissen der Geisteswissenschaften. Lotte Schüßler zeigt, dass die deutschsprachigen Geisteswissenschaften sich um die Wende zum 20. Jahrhundert nicht allein an Universitäten etablierten und ihre Diskurse mit Büchern und Vorlesungen bestritten. Um 1900 entsteht ein neues Hören: von der Medialisierung durch die phonographische Technik bis zu Arnold Schönbergs Emanzipation der Dissonanz. Wie hören wir Musik? Am Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts treffen mehrere Entwicklungen aufeinander, die dazu führen, dass diese Frage neu beantwortet wird: die Technisierung des Hörens durch den Phonographen und das Grammophon, die Verwissenschaftlichung durch Psychologie und Ethnologie und die Umbrüche in der Kompositionspraxis und -theorie. Es entsteht ein selbstreflexives Hören - der hörende Mensch in der Moderne hört in der Musik auch die Bedingungen seines eigenen Hörens. Zugleich öffnet sich das Hören bis hin zur musikalischen Wahrnehmung von Klängen, die zuvor als unmusikalisch galten, etwa von Dissonanzen oder ethnographischen Tonaufnahmen von Musik aus dem Hörer unbekannten Kulturen. Damit werden vermeintliche Gewissheiten über Musik in Frage gestellt und das europäische, bildungsbürgerliche Ohr wird herausgefordert. Diese epistemischen Verschiebungen verfolgt Frauke Fitzner quer durch den deutschsprachigen Musikdiskurs zwischen 1880 und 1930 und entwickelt aus ihnen eine Medientheorie des Musikhörens in der Moderne.
