Ahmad Fardid (1910–94), the 'anti-Western' philosopher known to many as the Iranian Heidegger, became the self-proclaimed philosophical spokesperson for the Islamic Republic, famously coining the term 'Westoxication'. Using new materials about Fardid's intellectual biography and interviews with thirteen individuals, Ali Mirsepassi pieces together the striking story of Fardid's life and intellectual legacy. Each interview in turn sheds light on Iran's twentieth-century intellectual and political self-construction and highlights Fardid's important role and influence in the creation of Iranian modernity. The Fardid phenomenon was unique to the Iranian story, and yet contributed to a broader twentieth-century Heideggerian tradition that marked the political destiny of other countries under a similar ideological sway. Through these accounts, Mirsepassi cuts to the nerve of how deadly political 'authenticity movements' take hold of modern societies and spread their ideology. Combining a sociological framework with the realities of lived experience, he examines Iran's recent and astonishing upheavals, experiments, and mass mobilizations.

"Tony Robinson-Smith could hardly imagine that he, his wife, ten Bhutanese college students, and a stray dog would end up running 578 kilometres (360 miles) across the Himalayas. In early 2006, he arrived in the Kingdom of Bhutan to work as a university lecturer. A casual conversation with his wife led to the creation of the "Tara-thon," a sponsored run to send village kids to school for Tarayana, the Queen Mother's non-profit foundation. In Bhutan--the country that originated the concept of Gross National Happiness--Robinson-Smith discovered he had much to learn. His memoir portrays Bhutan and its people in rich detail at a transformative moment of the Kingdom's history. Touching and insightful, The Dragon Run is the perfect book for inveterate explorers, adventure sports enthusiasts, and armchair travellers alike."--

Artificial Hells written by Claire Bishop and has been published by Verso Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-07-24 with Art categories.
The award-winning, highly acclaimed Artificial Hells is the first historical and theoretical overview of socially engaged participatory art, known in the US as "social practice." In recent decades, the art gallery and the museum have become a place for participatory art, where an audience is encouraged to take part in the artwork. This has been heralded as a revolutionary practise that can promote new emancipatory social relations. What was it is really? In this fully updated edition, Claire Bishop follows the trajectory of twentieth-century art and examines key moments in the development of a participatory aesthetic. This itinerary takes in Futurism and Dada; the Situationist International; Happenings in Eastern Europe, Argentina and Paris; the 1970s Community Arts Movement; and the Artists Placement Group. It concludes with a discussion of long-term educational projects by contemporary artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn, Tania Bruguera, Pawel Althamer and Paul Chan. Bishop challenges the political and aesthetic ambitions of participatory art this practise. She not only scrutinizes the emancipatory claims, but also provides an alternative to the ethical (rather than artistic) criteria invited by such artworks. In response Artificial Hells calls for a less prescriptive approach to art and politics, and for more compelling, troubling and bolder forms of participatory art and criticism.
