This book deals with Muslim modernity in a country with the largest single Muslim population in Sub-Saharan Africa. It provides much needed new grounds for comparative study. Until now, virtually all socio-anthropological works about any specific African country are either authored by nationals of that country or by Western scholars. This book is an exception because its author is an Islamicist and a social scientist from Senegal trained in the French social science tradition. Therefore, his work does offer an original perspective in the study of Nigeria. In addition, the study of Islam south of the Sahara has so far focused on Sufi orders, which form the mainstream of Islam, but which by no means, covers the whole Islamic field; socalled Islamic fundamentalist movements are also part of the religious landscape. This book is devoted to the study of the largest single Muslim fundamentalist organization in postcolonial Sub-Saharan Africa, the Society for the Removal of Innovation and Reinstatement of Tradition.

Seizing the space opened by the early 1990s democratization movement, Muslim women are carving an active, influential, but often-overlooked role for themselves during a time of great change. Engaging Modernity provides a compelling portrait of Muslim women in Niger as they confronted the challenges and opportunities of the late twentieth century. Based on thorough scholarly research and extensive fieldwork—including a wealth of interviews—Ousseina Alidou’s work offers insights into the meaning of modernity for Muslim women in Niger. Mixing biography with sociological data, social theory and linguistic analysis, this is a multilayered vision of political Islam, education, popular culture, and war and its aftermath. Alidou offers a gripping look at one of the Muslim world’s most powerful untold stories. Runner-up, Aidoo-Snyder Book Prize, Women’s Caucus of the African Studies Association, 2007

Awasom PhD Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences University of The Gambia, The Gambia Kane's seminal work, Muslim Modernity in Postcolonial Nigeria: A Study of the Society for the Removal of Innovation and Reinstatement of Tradi- tion, is a study of the Yan Izala or the Society for the Removal of Innova- tion and the Reinstatement of Tradition, which is the single largest Islamic reform moveme. [...] The spread of the Izala movement thus led to the redefinition of religious identities and the bipolarization of the Islamic field with the Sufis being referred to as Yan Tariqa and the reformers as Yan Izala. [...] For instance, on page 198 the author writes: "in disagreement with the above description, the weekly magazine...ascribes the ...cause of the riot to the attempt ...to slaughter a pig in the Muslim section of the abattoir". [...] The real agenda of the Izala as revealed by Kane in chapter 3,4, and 5 was not the promotion of modernity but the introduction of an alternative Islam of the Wahabiyya creed at the expense of the Sufi Orders. [...] It is the conjuncture of events following the splits in the KANU that saw the formation of the National Rainbow Alliance Coalition (NARC) and the defeat of the KANU by a margin of Kibaki's 62 per cent to Kenyatta's paltry 31 per cent of the votes.

Unveiling Modernity In Twentieth Century West African Islamic Reforms written by Ousman Kobo and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-27 with Religion categories.

In this book Ousman Kobo analyzes the origins of Wahhabi-inclined reform movements in two West African countries. Commonly associated with recent Middle Eastern influences, reform movements in Ghana and Burkina Faso actually began during the twilight of European colonial rule in the 1950s and developed from local doctrinal contests over Islamic orthodoxy. These early movements in turn gradually evolved in ways sympathetic to Wahhabi ideas. Kobo also illustrates the modernism of this style of Islamic reform. The decisive factor for most of the movements was the alliance of secularly educated Muslim elites with Islamic scholars to promote a self-consciously modern religiosity rooted in the Prophet Muhammad’s traditions. This book therefore provides a fresh understanding of the indigenous origins of “Wahhabism.”
