Unlocking the secrets of positive aging. Few prejudices in Western society are more powerful than those concerning aging. Until recently, we have assumed that the story of aging is one of loss and decline. But there’s an entirely different truth. Yes, you can teach an old dog—or even a sort-of-old dog—new tricks. Is there a secret to staying young? It turns out that there are many, and they all begin with nurturing our existing relationships to foster brain health, keeping us happier and healthier. As readers of this book will learn, wisdom, enhanced social relationships, greater adaptation and flexibility (mental, if not physical!)—all these things can be attained as we grow older. Filled with both practical and thought-provoking suggestions, this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to age in style.

Fetishism Psychoanalysis And Philosophy written by Alan Bass and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-27 with Philosophy categories.
Fetishism, Psychoanalysis, and Philosophy explores how and why Freud’s late work on fetishism led to the beginnings of a re-formulation of the theory and practice of psychoanalysis. Freud himself, however, was unaware of the long history of the concept of fetishism, a history crucial to understanding the concept. This book contains three main thrusts. One is historical, tracing the development of the concept of fetishism from the 16th century onwards. The focus here is on two important thinkers: Charles de Brosses from the 18th century, and Auguste Comte from the 19th. The second thrust is philosophical. Fetishism is always about the relation between the mind and things. Martin Heidegger, Jaques Derrida, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty have made essential contributions in this area, contributions which have important scientific relevance. The third thrust integrate the historical, philosophical, and psychoanalytic investigations of fetishism. It also looks at Wallace Stevens’ poetic meditation on mind and thing, which helps to illuminate everything that precedes. This comprehensive book features careful integration of the historical, philosophical, and psychoanalytic investigations of fetishism. It will contribute to opening new ways of thinking about the mind and how it is structured, so that fetishism is possible. Fetishism, Psychoanalysis, and Philosophy will appeal to psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists as well as philosophy scholars.

Exploring new and past research in the understanding of how the brain deals with its own body image, this book provides a review of pertinent literature and offers comprehensive descriptions of technical approaches. The material includes new frameworks for the conceptualization of the system's representations, scientific and clinical applications that stem from these approaches based on the new concepts, and a discussion of tools used to study the interface of the brain and the body. The book provides computational strategies for sensorimotor integration of the mammalian brain and includes algorithms for the design and implementation of haptic interfaces and tactile displacement.

Are angels real, or imaginary? Can they really save your life or intervene in your destiny? If they are real, can we talk to them like we would a good friend? Do they hear our thoughts and know our every deed? Do angels have opinions or judge us? Archangels Speak, answers these and many other questions. The best way to use angels in your life is to think of them as a means to bring you into alignment with your Higher Truth and Higher Self. When we get stuck in defensive points of view, operating primarily from the defended ego, we often get ourselves into ruts and patterns that make us miserable. With the angel's words, this book helps to "bump" us out of that ego mind and into something grander. It asks us to consider Love before hate and challenges us to think in new ways.

All natural auditory signals, including human speech and animal communication signals, are spectrally and temporally complex, that is, they contain multiple frequencies and their frequency composition, or spectrum, varies over time. The ability of hearers to identify and localize these signals depends on analysis of their spectral composition. For the overwhelming majority of human listeners spoken language is the major means of social communication, and this communication therefore depends on spectral analysis. Spectral analysis begins in the cochlea, but is then elaborated at various stages along the auditory pathways in the brain that lead from the cochlea to the cerebral cortex. The broad purpose of Auditory Spectral Processing is to provide a comprehensive account of the way in which spectral information is processed in the brain and the way in which this information is used by listeners to identify and localize sounds. Examines spectral processing mechanisms at different levels along the auditory neuraxis, from the cochlear nucleus to the cortex Reviews in detail psychophysical and neurophysiological evidence on the way in which spectral information is processed within and across frequency channels Presents information on the nature of the spectral information required for speech and music perception Examines a series of issues that relate to the role of spectral analysis in higher order/cognitive aspects of hearing and in clinical and applied contexts

Inside the Object Model serves two key functions: it teaches object-oriented analysis and design from first principles and clearly explains C++ mechanisms that implement object-oriented concepts. Drawing on nearly ten years of programming and teaching experience, Papurt thoroughly describes the relationship between the basic principles and concerns of object modeling and the C++ programming language. Each chapter uses independent examples to illustrate key concepts described in the text and features helpful icons that clearly identify important ideas and dangerous pitfalls. With over 100 figures, hundreds of working code examples, and comparisons of coding techniques, this book rewards the reader with a complete understanding of both C++ and the object model. Professional software analysts, designers, programmers, and advanced computer science students will benefit from reading this book.

Mind Altering Drugs written by Mitch Earleywine and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-04-14 with Psychology categories.
At least one of every three Americans has used an illicit drug. Drugs attract considerable attention in science, legislation, and the media. Nonetheless, many people develop attitudes about drugs and drug users based on limited information. Researchers often find themselves divided into camps based on the drug they study most often, which limits their ability to benefit from important work done on other drugs. As a result, government policies form without a complete understanding of the intoxication experience. What is the nature of intoxication? At first, this question appears to be simple and straightforward, but upon closer inspection, the dichotomous distinctions between everyday awareness and its alternatives grow fuzzy. An in-depth examination of the subjective effects of drugs and the pursuit of altered states soon leads to age-old questions about free will, heredity, environment, and consciousness. Mind-Altering Drugs is the first book to bring together chapters from leading researchers that present diverse, empirically based insights into the subjective experiences of drugs a nd their links to addictive potential. By avoiding simple depictions of psychoactive chemicals and the people who use them, these recognized experts explain how modern research in many fields reveals a complex interaction between people, situations, and substances. Their work demonstrates that only a multitude of approaches can show the nuances of subjective experience, and that each substance may create a different effect with every administration in each user. Simple references to physiological underpinnings or positive reinforcement fail to explain the diverse responses to drugs. However, research has progressed to reveal broad, repeatable evidence that the subjective effects of substances play an important role in our understanding of drug abuse, and so should inform our decisions about policy. This thorough and accessible review of the subjective effects of drugs and the dominant theories behind those effects will provide a wealth of information about the experience of intoxication for lay readers, and a road map to studies in other disciples for student and professional researchers.
