Die Geschichte des nordkoreanischen Films ist eng mit der politischen und ideologischen Entwicklung des Landes verknüpft, für dessen Konstituierung die wiederholte Narration des historischen Erbes eine wichtige Rolle spielt. In dieser Hinsicht können alle nordkoreanischen Filme als Zeugnisse der geschichtlichen Ereignisse (Kolonialismus und Krieg) und als Willensversicherung einer gemeinsamen Zukunftsgestaltung (sozialistische Revolution) betrachtet werden. Dementsprechend fungiert Film als ein wichtiges, Kohärenz stiftendes Medium und hat einen hohen politischen Stellenwert. Je nach innen- und außenpolitischer Agenda der Partei verändern sich die jeweiligen Forderungen an die Filmemacher, aber die Grundprinzipien ideologischer Vermittlungsarbeit bleiben gleich – Familie und Staat werden als essentielle Einheit präsentiert und zur Konsolidierung staatlicher Macht herangezogen. Im Zentrum dieser politisierten Ästhetik stehen der Staatsgründer Kim Il Sung und dessen Sohn Kim Jong Il, die dem Staat als Vater und der von ihnen geschaffenen und beherrschten Partei zugleich als Mutter vorstehen.
