Edward R. Morrow once said, “Anyone who isn’t confused [about Vietnam] really doesn’t understand the situation.” For many this quote is as true in 2023, on the 50th Anniversary of the war’s “end,” as it was when the war ended; therefore, it now seems timely to take another look at all this confusion. The “situation” in Vietnam was, to be sure, confusing to many who wanted to know, from the very beginning, why the United States became involved in those foreign rice paddies some 7,000 miles away, and it was equally confusing, at the end, to many who wanted to know why the United States, after it lost so much blood and treasure, abandoned its ally to communism in 1975. In an attempt to address these and other questions this account begins years before America became involved in Vietnam and ends years after it left. The Vietnam War proved to be a watershed moment in American history and I have picked this anniversary year to look back in time through a geopolitical lens to try and better understand that era. And, a better understanding of that moment in time might also prove helpful to understanding current events because past could well become prologue when it comes to completing unfinished business in Afghanistan and when it comes to ending the war in Ukraine.

Amongst The Marines written by Steven Preece and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-29 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Steven Preece was a Royal Marine Commando from 1983 to 1990, serving first at entry-level and then as a lance-corporal. Amongst the Marines is Steven's first-hand account of his years as an elite soldier, focusing directly on the excessive and often shocking lifestyle of the Marines during this time, and impact this had on his own personality and behaviour. Preece fulfilled his childhood ambition by earning the coveted Green Beret when he was 18. He was unaware, however, of the brutal rite of passage that awaited him and all the other 'pieces of skin' [new recruits]. Violence in the Marines, as Steven discovered, was not limited to the battlefield but a continual part of a pervasive culture of bullying and aggression. It did not take long for Preece to be accepted into this culture and to adopt it as his own. On duty he was fit, committed and loyal, while off duty he displayed a mammoth capacity for drinking, fighting and womanising. On home leave, Steven found it increasingly hard to adapt to civilian life. His drinking sessions in local pubs frequently ended in fights with the locals and even in violence against members of his own family. Preece earned a reputation amongst his fellow Marines for pranks and dangerous behaviour; and this eventually led him to be court-maritialled. To his relief and surprise, however, Preece was fully acquitted by the court. Amongst the Marines is an unflinching exposé of the culture of the Marines, from foul practical jokes and rough justice to the off-duty orgies of drink, sex and violence. It is a no-holds-barred account of the many shocking incidents Preece witnessed and participated in, from his first day as a new recruit to his exit from the Marines with his reputation intact and his scores settled once and for all.

An epic story of valor and sacrifice by a legendary Marine company in the Korean War brought to gripping, cinematic light by an acclaimed historian ("Gives the brave Marines of George Company long overdue recognition"--New York Post) "What would you want if you could have any wish?" asked the photojournalist of the haggard, bloodied Marine before him. The Marine gaped at his interviewer. The photographer snapped his picture, which became the iconic Korean War image featured on this book's jacket. "Give me tomorrow," he said at last. After nearly four months of continuous and agonizing combat on the battlefields of Korea, such a simple request seemed impossible. For many men of George Company, or "Bloody George" as they were known-one of the Forgotten War's most decorated yet unrecognized companies-it was a wish that would not come true. This is the untold story of "Bloody George," a Marine company formed quickly to answer its nation's call to duty in 1950. This small band of men-a colorful cast of characters, including a Native American fighting to earn his honor as a warrior, a Southern boy from Tennessee at odds with a Northern blue-blood reporter-turned-Marine, and a pair of twins who exemplified to the group the true meaning of brotherhood-were mostly green troops who had been rushed through training to fill America's urgent need on the Korean front. They would find themselves at the tip of the spear in some of the Korean War's bloodiest battles. After storming ashore at Inchon and fighting house-to-house in Seoul, George Company, one of America's last units in reserve, found itself on the frozen tundra of the Chosin Reservoir facing elements of an entire division of Chinese troops. They didn't realize it then, but they were soon to become crucial to the battle-modern-day Spartans called upon to hold off ten times their number. Give Me Tomorrow is their unforgettable story of bravery and courage. Thoroughly researched and vividly told, Give Me Tomorrow is fitting testament to the heroic deeds of George Company. They will never again be forgotten.

In 1982, 8,000 miles from home, in a harsh environment and without the newest and most sophisticated equipment, the numerically inferior British Task Force defeated the Argentinian forces occupying the Falkland Islands and recaptured this far-flung outpost of what was once an empire. It was a much-needed triumph for Margaret Thatcher's government and for Britain. Many books have been published on the Falklands War, some offering accounts from participants in it. But this is the first one only to include interviews with the ordinary seamen, marines, soldiers and airmen who achieved that victory, as well as those whose contribution is often overlooked – the merchant seaman who crewed ships taken up from trade, the NAAFI personnel who supplied the all-important treats that kept spirits up, the Hong Kong Chinese laundrymen who were aboard every warship. Published to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the conflict, this is the story of what 'Britain's last colonial war' was really like.

This is a true account of a heavily suppressed story of intrigue that begins with an inquiry into a strange and isolated shooting fatality in Texas in 1982. It leads progressively through Texas agencies to the FBI and eventually to highly placed officials in Texas, Arkansas and Washington D.C. A former resident of Mena, Arkansas is allegedly shot to death in Texas in August 1982. Without conducting an investigation local authorities quickly rule the fatality an accident and impose a news blackout on the shooting. The father of the victim uncovers serious discrepancies and learns that local Texas FBI agents were associated with the incident as were federal agents in a federal grand jury investigation in Philadelphia. Appeals to the Texas State Attorney General for an inquiry to resolve the many discrepancies and contradictions in the case fail. Members of Congress contact the Texas Governor to request an official inquiry. The Governor grants their request but quickly terminates it without notifying them of his action. Arkansas Senator David Pryor and U.S. Representative John Hammerschmidt then take the matter up with the Director of the FBI, the Director of BATF and the Department of Justice in Washington only to encounter persistent evasions. The Texas fatality is later linked to government- sanctioned drug and arms smuggling activities in Mena, Arkansas that were being investigated by Arkansas State Trooper Russell Welch, IRS investigator Bill Duncan and private investigator Gene Wheaton. The author's dogged investigation into the suppressed death of his son presents a well documented, fully corroborated account of the misuse of official power. That pernicious danger threatens the very fabric of American society and American constitutional freedoms. This intriguing tale of transgressions in high places is not just an engrossing story. It is a wake-up call.

Steinbeck written by Steve Hauk and has been published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-14 with categories.

It's 1942. The novelist John Steinbeck needs character witnesses to sign his application to carry a gun in New York. He's received a threatening phone call and feels the need for self-protection. He's a relative newcomer to the Empire State - most of his close friends live back in California, so finding people to sign could be difficult for the controversial author. Feeling time is of the essence, he begins his search for character witnesses in the idyllic village of Palisades, where he makes his home. The Application is one of sixteen tales in Steinbeck: The Untold Stories examining the emotional and psychological toll extracted for writing the truth as Steinbeck saw it, in works such as Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. From his days in Salinas and Los Gatos and Pacific Grove on California's Monterey Peninsula to his later years in New York, we meet the people who were important in his life as well as the dark specters of those who opposed him and what he was writing. The stories look at his friends and contemporaries and those who outlived him. Henry, for instance, a boyhood pal who decades later sees John again in a visit to Henry's Salinas service station under cover of darkness. Or Lily, an old high school classmate who invites him to an impromptu reunion that turns dangerous for John and the other participants gathered in a park. Artists, too, were important in his world. The young couple he gave money to so they could explore Mexico and "learn to paint out loud." The painter, a giant of a man, who on a summer night carried Steinbeck out of his home after an argument on labor issues. The famous film actress who accompanies him on a nervous drive, from Los Angeles up the Salinas Valley in the light of day. There were those who had little or no contact with him but were influenced and moved by his work. Beau, a charismatic chainsmoking cowboy who proudly felt he inspired the creation of a Steinbeck character. The terminally ill book collector Paul, who finds temporary escape from his worries and responsibilities by searching for Steinbeck first editions. The wanderer Bill who arrives in Monterey and is befriended by those who knew Steinbeck and instruct him in the legacy. Or the gentle woman who looks back seventy years recalling her famous marine biologist father's relationship with the writer - as well as with his own children. These and other stories are further brought to life by the gritty, character-driven illustrations of artist C. Kline. Images such as John's mother Olive gathering flowers while remembering a sad day in her youth. A young sailor off an aircraft carrier drinking with two American strangers in a Greek bar while a political coup is underway. A Big Sur trapper tearfully parting with a mountain lion named Flora. Or the writer explaining to a ghost he has no home and never did. These stories and characters provide pathos and humor to the portrait of a great writer dealing with his memories and fears. And - as Steinbeck once described it in a letter to a friend - the powerful desire to begin again and return to the ocean tide pools and star-gazing of his youth.
