Meet Abriana Yeo, 13, awkward and friendless. Meet Octavia Wu, a graceful teenage alien with superpowers. Forced to flee her home planet Viridis after an invasion by "The Others", another alien species, Octavia and her parents crash-land in the Singapore heartland. Pretending to be a foreign student, Octavia enters secondary one and befriends Abriana, who then helps her in her quest to find the Anteris, a missing element the alien family needs if they want to return to Viridis to help in the war effort. All the while, the two girls also need to navigate the intricate web of teenage drama at Bukit Timah Secondary Girls’ School (BTSGS), where mean girls thwart their search efforts every step of the way. Behind the adventure, mystery and sci-fi, this middle-grade novel also explores the pertinent issues that teenagers typically deal with in a local school setting—friendship, loyalty, CCAs, homework and bullies. There is also no shortage of excitement and intrigue in this sci-fi and adventure. This is the first in a four-book series, for children aged 10 and above. Reader Reviews "It’s easy to get hooked and binge read My BFF Is An Alien in a single sitting, not just for its very manageable length, but also how it dives straight into the girls’ quest and keeps up the pace for the rest of the novel. Less than 40 pages in, and the two are already off on an islandwide adventure ... that will spark the imaginations of any Singaporean resident." —bakchormeeboy "An imaginative and enjoyable story about friendship and standing up for yourself. After reading this book, you'll wish you had an alien BFF too!" —Low Ying Ping, bestselling author of the Mount Emily series

A thought-provoking comedy about being an alien from prize-winning Zanib Mian. Maxx is an alien: a real one - from the planet Zerg. He's on Earth to research these strange things called emotions that humans have (and eat as much chocolate as he can). But some of the humans seem to think Maxx's new human friend Jibreel is an alien too, and Maxx just can't figure it out. Why would coming from another country make you an alien?! Why Do We Hurt Ourselves written by Baptiste Brossard and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-14 with Social Science categories.

A sociological analysis of self-injury, the causes of it, and the conditions surrounding those who commit it. Why does an estimated 5% of the general population intentionally and repeatedly hurt themselves? What are the reasons certain people resort to self-injury as a way to manage their daily lives? In Why Do We Hurt Ourselves, sociologist Baptiste Brossard draws on a five-year survey of self-injurers and suggests that the answers can be traced to social, more than personal, causes. Self-injury is not a matter of disturbed individuals resorting to hurting themselves in the face of individual weaknesses and difficulties. Rather, self-injury is the reaction of individuals to the tensions that compose, day after day, the tumultuousness of their social life and position. Self-harm is a practice that people use to self-control and maintain order—to calm down, or to avoid “going haywire” or “breaking everything.” More broadly, through this research Brossard works to develop a perspective on the contemporary social world at large, exploring quests for self-control in modern Western societies.

What happens when a forty-five-year old therapist goes to acting school with a group of young actors? While testing her theory that the arts are the pathway to higher consciousness and a spiritual worldview, the author encounters unexpected drama. Art and life blur as she faces daily conflicts, a brush with death, life-altering neurological changes, and a classmates suicide. Through acting, she gains powerful insights about artistic endeavor and heightened consciousness; above all, she realizes that shifting the worldview requires following Gandhis wisdom: Be the change that you want to see in the world. Throughout her adventures, Dr. Duanita shows the reader how to co-create reality, enhance creativity, and deepen their spiritual connection. So powerful is the intention of her true story that few who read it will fail to experience a transformation of mind, heart, and spirit.

Despite overwhelming adversity along the way, Laszlo Makk never stopped dreaming and hoping; he never gave up his trust in God. As a young man, Laszlo was blessed to survive World War II and the Hungarian Uprising of 1956; he eventually escaped to America, where he has found happiness as a proud U.S. citizen with the help of dear friends and a wonderful loving family. He earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College in New York and trained in Houston. Ultimately, Dr. Makk landed in Louisville, Kentucky, where he worked as a greatly respected pathologist for over forty years. With strong determination and hard work, he overcame many obstacles and became a renowned doctor who contributed to the world’s knowledge of cancer. In addition to surviving hepatitis, a liver transplant, and open heart surgery himself; he saw his wife through a fourteen-year battle with breast cancer—relying on his personal medical knowledge to identify the best in cancer care. Four sons and nine grandchildren carry on the Makk legacy of hard work and a determined pursuit of happiness.
