There were two branches of the Macarthur family in Australia. The first branch was known as the Camden Park Branch and the second was known as the Vineyard Branch. The Vineyard Branch was founded by James Macarthur (1741-1824) and his wife, Catherine Hawkins (1757-1824). Emmeline Macarthur (1828-1911) was born in The Vineyard, Australia and spent her childhood there. She later traveled to Europe and in 1848 she married George Leslie (1820-1860), also of Australia. The Leslie brothers were Australian pioneers and very influential in their day.

There he meets Emmeline Leslie, the young Australian widow of a bush pioneer. The differences between their complex histories enrich the ensuing romance, but frustrate their search for a home. “The letters of World War II Gen. Eichelberger to his wife delineate an intriguing picture of infighting at the high level of military command. He reveals more about Gen. Douglas MacArthur for one, than a searching biographer. The large-scale picture of a major army at war is superb.”–UPI
