You are holding the only comprehensive history of the early days of the sport of skydiving yet published. It is the story of not just one skydiver but the story of many, the true pioneers of the sport. Just as important this book includes a complete history of the national organization established for the express purpose of promoting sport parachuting. While this history is restricted to a short fifteen years (1961-1975), those years were the most productive, most far-reaching, and the most exciting for the fledgling idea of jumping out of perfectly good airplanes for the sheer joy of it all, eventually establishing the sport of skydiving as an integral part of the world of aviation sports. This book tells the story of those formative years with details of battles fought to maintain freedom of the skies for all parachutists when government and corporate interests made numerous attempts to severely restrict the right of skydivers to use our nation's airspace. This story is told by a man who dedicated his life to the advancement of the sport, serving for twelve years as the chief executive officer of the national organization for skydivers, the Parachute Club of America / US Parachute Association. The reader will embark on a most exciting journey, a journey not told before, continually laced with personal stories that will touch your heart, make you smile, and occasionally make you laugh. This book contains over 400 photographs and 1,500 names of people from around the world who participated in that wonderful and exhilarating sport called skydiving.

Shawn Baker’s Carnivore Diet is a revolutionary, paradigm-breaking nutritional strategy that takes contemporary dietary theory and dumps it on its head. It breaks just about all the “rules” and delivers outstanding results. At its heart is a focus on simplicity rather than complexity, subtraction rather than addition, making this an incredibly effective diet that is also easy to follow. Carnivore Diet reviews some of the supporting evolutionary, historical, and nutritional science that gives us clues as to why so many people are having great success with this meat-focused way of eating. It highlights dramatic real-world transformations experienced by people of all types. Common disease conditions that are often thought to be lifelong and progressive are often reversed on this diet, and in this book, Baker discusses some of the theory behind that phenomenon as well. It outlines a comprehensive strategy for incorporating the Carnivore Diet as a tool or a lifelong eating style, and Baker offers a thorough discussion of the most common misconceptions about this diet and the problems people have when transitioning to it.

In his own words, the war of the doubly pioneering Lt Col Gerhard L. Bolland—82nd Airborne paratrooper on D-Day and senior OSS field operative on Operation Rype. Unconventional warfare tactics can have a considerable effect on the outcome of any war. During World War II, the United States government developed and employed two new methods of fighting. The first was the development of "paratroop" units, as they were first called. The second was the formation of a covert and sabotage operations branch called the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Lt. Colonel Bolland was involved in both of these "firsts." During the D-Day invasion he parachuted behind enemy lines, jumping out of the 82nd Airborne lead aircraft with General James Gavin. After fighting with the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment for thirty-three days straight, he returned to England and became involved with the OSS Scandinavian Section. He served as Field Commander for their Operation, code named Rype. This was the only American military undertaking, albeit covert, in Norway during the entire course of the war. As a young boy growing up in rural western Minnesota, Bolland got his military start with the Minnesota National Guard, before being accepted to West Point, solely on merit. His military career lasted seventeen years. Lt. Colonel Bolland ended up with numerous decorations including the Norwegian Liberation Medal and Citation, the Bronze Star for valor, the French Fouragerre of Croix de Guerre with Palms and posthumously the Congressional Gold medal awarded to the OSS Society on behalf of all former OSS members that served during the war. His story reveals the struggles, successes, failures and ultimate victories, detailing what went right and what went wrong with these new unconventional methods of fighting.

Why did I write this book? I'm still not sure. After all, I'm a researcher, which means I think I know how to write technical papers. But writing for a n- technical audience is something I know nothing about. It took a lot of effort before I could force myself to sit down to write the first word. Once I did, however, it was hard not to stop! When I started this project, I didn't know that I had a lot to say and, in some sense, the results show this. The book is much longer than I even imagined it would be. Worse yet is that there is a lot of material that I decided not to include. It's a good thing that the publishers decided to limit how long the book could be! However, after much soul searching, I think I now know the reasons why I wrote this book. First and foremost, this book tells an interesting story. It's about the life of a checkers-playing computer program, Chinook, from its creation in 1989 to its retirement in 1996. In reality the story revolves around two people with different views of the program. As the creator of Chinook, I wanted to push the program to become the best player in the world, in much the same way that a father might encourage his son to excel at sports.

Boys of the Clouds tells the fascinating stories, in their own words, of over seventy veterans of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion during the Second World War. The Battalion, part of the British 6th Airborne Division, was among the very first Allied soldiers to land on French soil on June 6, 1944. Despite a widely scattered drop, they managed to take and hold all their objectives on D-Day, and continued to hold off German counter attacks through that fateful summer. After suffering heavy losses in Normandy, the unit returned to England in September 1944 to refit and train for the next airborne operation. This training was interrupted when they were hastily sent to defend against the German offensive in the Ardennes, commonly known as the Battle of the Bulge. They were the only Canadian unit to take part in this action. After the threat had passed, and the German offensive halted, they once again returned to England to prepare for the next drop. This finally came on March 24, 1945 when the Allies were able to cross the Rhine in a massive combined airborne and river crossing operation, the largest the world has ever seen. Success came quickly on the drop zone and within three days, they embarked on a hectic journey that would take them from the Rhine River all the way to Wismar on the Baltic Sea by May 2nd, where they linked up with Russian forces. This historic meeting signified the end of the war in Europe. The Battalion then had the honour of being the first Canadian unit to return to Canada as a complete group. They landed in Halifax to a tumultuous welcome and were awarded the key to the city. Follow their arduous and often hilarious journey and discover why they joined up, what the parachute training was like, especially their first jump, what it was like jumping into action for the first time in Normandy, the conditions in the Ardennes, crossing the Rhine and the fateful trek to Wismar to end the war. It's all here, in their own words.
