A captivating, beautifully illustrated memoir of a life in nature, and a testament to the mutual rewards and delights of keeping chickens, by the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Flower Yard 'I am a toddler the first time I meet a chicken, and we are equal in size and height. The hen has tiny eyelashes, a strawberry-jam face and a voice of purring clucks. I sense a happy spirit of inquisitiveness and smile in fascination. From that moment on, I will always love the company of chickens. I have found my tribe' Most of us want a dog, or a cat, or a pony when we are young - for Arthur Parkinson, it was always hens. Growing up in an ex-mining town in Nottinghamshire, the other kids in the playground called him 'Chicken Boy'. But the quiet fulfilment of keeping hens became his sanctuary, a tonic for mental and physical health, a connection with his family and the natural world. From the local allotments and his nan's back garden, to Chatsworth and an unlikely friendship with the late Duchess of Devonshire, a famous hen-keeper, Chicken Boy tells the story of the love and satisfaction to be found in caring for living things. Illustrated with Arthur's own characterful watercolours and photographs of his 'girls', and laden with practical hen-keeping tips, gardening advice and introductions to common, rare and pure breeds, Chicken Boy is a one-of-a-kind memoir of a life in nature.

Winner of the Guild of Food Writers General Cookbook Award 2020 'A manual for living and a declaration of hope' Nigella Lawson 'A moving testimonial to the redemptive power of cooking. Generous, honest and uplifting' Diana Henry There are lots of ways to start a story, but this one begins with a chicken... When the world becomes overwhelming, Ella Risbridger focuses on the little things that bring her joy, like enjoying a glass of wine when cooking, FaceTiming with a friend whilst making bagels, and sharing recipes that are good for the soul. One night she found herself lying on her kitchen floor, wondering if she would ever get up – and it was the thought of a chicken, of roasting it, and of eating it, that got her to her feet and made her want to be alive. Midnight Chicken is a cookbook. Or, at least, you'll flick through these pages and find recipes so inviting that you will head straight for the kitchen: roast garlic and tomato soup, uplifting chilli-lemon spaghetti, charred leek lasagne, squash skillet pie, spicy fish finger sandwiches and burnt-butter brownies. It's the kind of cooking you can do a little bit drunk, that is probably better if you've got a bottle of wine open and a hunk of bread to mop up the sauce. But if you settle down and read it with a cup of tea (or a glass of that wine), you'll also discover that it's an annotated list of things worth living for – a manifesto of moments worth living for. This is a cookbook to make you fall in love with the world again. Featuring an entire chapter on storecupboard recipes. An unforgettably exuberant and potent novel by a writer at the height of her powers Two auditors for the U.S. egg industry go rogue and conceive a plot to steal a million chickens in the middle of the night—an entire egg farm’s worth of animals. Janey and Cleveland—a spirited former runaway and the officious head of audits—assemble a precarious, quarrelsome team and descend on the farm on a dark spring evening. A series of catastrophes ensues. Deb Olin Unferth’s wildly inventive novel is a heist story of a very unusual sort. Swirling with a rich array of voices, Barn 8 takes readers into the minds of these renegades: a farmer’s daughter, a former director of undercover investigations, hundreds of activists, a forest ranger who suddenly comes upon forty thousand hens, and a security guard who is left on an empty farm for years. There are glimpses twenty thousand years into the future to see what chickens might evolve into on our contaminated planet. We hear what hens think happens when they die. In the end the cracked hearts of these indelible characters, their earnest efforts to heal themselves, and their radical actions will lead them to ruin or revelation. Funny, whimsical, philosophical, and heartbreaking, Barn 8 ultimately asks: What constitutes meaningful action in a world so in need of change? Unferth comes at this question with striking ingenuity, razor-sharp wit, and ferocious passion. Barn 8 is a rare comic-political drama, a tour de force for our time.

Holy Cow...I'm A Chicken Mama is a delightful story of my journey from normal woman to 'Chicken Mama'. While kicking around ideas for the topic of this book, I ran into a friend of mine at the local feed store. We began talking and before long, she was picking my brain about chickens. She'd had her flock for about a year and her hens were happy, but something had changed. Her egg count was diminishing rapidly so she decided to ask my advice. Her girls had been giving her six eggs a day for months but now she was lucky to find a few. And on some days, there were none. She didn't understand what was going on. There was no seasonal reason for the reduction but knowing where she lived, I knew exactly what her problem was. I told my friend the story of my disappearing eggs. She didn't want to believe me at first but after hearing the story, she knew I was right. She turned white as a ghost and I thought she might faint, and then she said, "So all this time, it's been that close to me and I never saw it." She was horrified and went home immediately to check it out. She called to tell me it was exactly where I told her it would be and then I told her what she had to do. The next day she called with her own horrific tale and we belly laughed over our shared adventure. We began to share other chicken stories and before we knew it, an hour had passed while we laughed like crazy women about all the things we'd seen. As I sat in front of my laptop later that afternoon to begin an outline for the new book, I recalled the look on my friends face when I told her what was causing her eggs to disappear. I started to chuckle again thinking about the entire encounter and then I typed Holy Cow...I'm A Chicken Mama. I looked at the words in front of me and knew. I had to tell my story so I kept on writing. Raising chickens is exciting and there's never a dull moment when chickens are in the yard. They're mesmerizing and I often find myself just staring out the window watching them play as if I'm dazed or drugged. Holy Cow...I'm A Chicken Mama is a story of how rescuing chickens changed my life. Suddenly I had all these chickens to feed and protect and I had no idea what I was doing. I never intended to keep chickens and when I rescued these, my plan was to find some poor sap to take them off my hands. Little did I know that poor sap would be me. They were now mine and they took over my life. I was no longer a normal woman with a normal life and I wasn't very happy about that at first. But then something miraculous happened and it opened my eyes to the beautiful and amazing world of chickens. So I gave up resisting and left the old me behind and before I knew what had happened, I was a "Chicken Mama" and there was no going back. Holy Cow...I'm A Chicken Mama is a mix of humorous tales and basic information that I hope will help as you travel the same road I did. My goal with this book is not to be a straight up "How To" but instead to give you a firsthand accounting of my adventures with the chickens. If chickens are in your future, I advise you to read on and learn from my mistakes. It was trial and error because I knew absolutely nothing about chickens when I agreed to take them in, but I learned quickly. There's so much information on the Internet about raising chickens, but you'll never know how wonderful and exciting it truly is until you hear our stories. Once you do, you will want to raise them yourselves, of that, I am certain. I first started raising chickens in 2004 and over the past eleven years, I've learned so much. Those first birds never liked me much but these I have now are like my babies. I hand raised them all and they have bonded to me and me to them. They follow me around the yard and in their minds I am truly their "mama." Thank you for considering Holy Cow...I'm A Chicken Mama as your next read. I'm certain you will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Happy Reading. Kim
