An autobiographical account of one man's history of sailing, from childhood to old age, this delightful collection of stories is half about the humor, half about imparting actual sailing know-how, and half about warning other sailors to avoid the same mistakes the author made (a ratio mathematically possible only in a book about sailing). From the first Hobie Cat sold in the state of Michigan, to sailboards, to Sunfish, to rental boats offshore of Nixon's "Winter White House," and ultimately to full-sized cruising sailboats, there is a wide variety of experience condensed into these pages, all of it, in the final analysis, expressing nothing so much as the author's deep, abiding-arguably unrequited-love and passion for sailing. As he phrases it: "The mysterious allure of sailing is difficult for non-sailors to understand. Reading this book you might wonder at times how I can love it so much, with all the hassle, the inconvenience, the discomfort, the unreliability I have described. But very much like golf, another activity I love, where you can spend a whole day sucking and then hit one beautiful shot that rekindles instantly all your passion for the game, sailing will give you moments that are so indescribably sublime you can never get them out of your mind."

More than eight hundred sailors served aboard the Sterett during her hazardous and demanding duties in World War II. This is the story of those men and their beloved ship, recorded by a junior officer who served on the famous destroyer from her commissioning in 1939 to April 1943, when he was wounded at the Battle of Tulagi. Peppered with the kind of vivid, authentic details that could only be provided by a participant, the book is the saga of a gallant fighting ship that earned a Presidential Unit Citation for her part in the Third Battle of Savo Island, where she took on a battleship, cruiser, and destroyer and was the last to leave the fray. Calhoun's gripping and colorful account tells what it was like to be there during those furiously fought, close-range engagements. When published in hardcover in 1993, the book was widely praised as a good read loaded with rich and interesting details.

The Cold War was the age of steam and confrontation for American sailors. This book is filled with vignettes in the career of a Cold War sailor who served from 1969 to 1994. It shares memories of challenges, mistakes, successes and many failures. However, in all of them is reflected the proud attitude and humor of a "lifer" who was always ready to do his duty with his shipmates against "those stinkin' commies." In other words, it is a collection of "sea stories" shared by an old salt.

Excerpt from The Story of a Sailor's Life I AM writing this to show the wonderful mercies the Lord has shown me in fifty years' life-time at sea, and I hope that whoever may have a chance to look at it, it will teach them not to despair, or give them selves up for lost for by perseverance, and a firm trust in the AI mighty, we can do anything that the Giver of all good will allow us to do; for there is a Sweet little cherub that sits up aloft, keeps a watch for the life of poor Jack. By accounts that I had from my friends, when I came to the years of' recollection, I was informed that I was born at sea, in the year of' our Lord 1777, on the 2otb of August my father being master of a brig belonging to Hull in Yorkshire, and when I was born, he was bound on a voyage from London to Hamburg. My mother being at sea along with her husband, and being at sea, and by contrary winds and bad weather being detained longer than what they expected, I was born on board of the J ane and Margaret, belonging to the port of Hull, when the brig was nearly abreast of' Heligoland, an island that lays at the entrance of Hamburg River; but my mother being very podrly, she and I were left at a place called Cuxhaven, at the entrance of the River Elbe. But my father being obliged to proceed upon his voyage, my mother and me were left at Hamburg at the consul's. And the winter setting in sooner and severer than B.
