In this classic memoir and travelogue, the Swedish explorer shares the story of his epic journey along the ancient Silk Road. After a childhood spent reading tales of adventure in far-off places, Sven Hedin knew by the time he was twelve years old that he wanted to be an explorer. He lived in an age when maps still contained uncharted territories and he wished to travel to these mysterious destinations. By the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, he traveled along the Silk Road in Asia for three decades. In My Life as an Explorer, Hedin recounts his journeys along the ancient route. He discovers long-lost cities, maps unfamiliar rivers, and finds himself in many life-threatening situations. He makes a perilous trek through the Taklamakan desert in China where his party runs dangerously low on water. He climbs treacherous mountains and evades ruthless bandits. He infiltrates Lhasa, the Tibetan city restricted from Westerners by penalty of death. And while he lives to tell the tale, his journey is not without sacrifice . . . Originally published in 1926, Hedin’s story of real-life adventure was a worldwide bestseller. It delighted audiences then and continues to do so. “A fascinating period piece as well as a nail-biting read.” —The Guardian

Excerpt from My Life as an Explorer More than that, I began at once to fit myself for this career. In Norway, in those days, there were no organized athletic sports as there _are now every where. The only sports at all were football and skiing. Although I did not like football, I went in for it as part of the task of training my body to endure hardship. But to skiing I took with perfect naturalness and intense enthusiasm. At every opportunity of freedom from school, from November to April, I went out in the open, exploring the hills and mountains which rise in every direction around Oslo, increasing my skill in traversing ice and snow and hardening my muscles for the coming great adventure. In those days, houses were kept tightly closed in winter, so I was regarded as an innovator and some thing of a freak because I insisted on sleeping with my bedroom windows wide open, even in the bitterest weather. My mother anxiously expostulated with me about this practice. To her I explained that I liked fresh air, but of course it was really a part of my conscientious hardening process. Wild By Nature written by Sarah Marquis and has been published by Atlantic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In 2010, Sarah Marquis embarked on a perilous journey: alone and on foot, she walked ten thousand miles across the Gobi Desert, from Siberia, through Thailand, to the Australian outback. Relying on hunting and her own wits, she traversed fever-haunted jungles and scorching deserts, braved harassment from drug dealers, the Mafia, and camp raids from thieves on horseback. Surviving dehydration, dengue fever delirium and crippling infection, Sarah experienced a raw and spiritual communion after three years of walking at the base of a tree in the plains of Australia. Through an inspirational journey, Wild by Nature explores what it is to adventure as a woman in the most dangerous of circumstances, and what it is to be truly alone in the wild.
