Laozi's Daodejing The English and Chinese Translations Based on Laozi's Original Daoism From Philosophical and Hermeneutical Perspectives 老子的道德经中英白话句解与老学研究 "Your work on Lao Tzu promises to be very interesting." --Professor Sir Alfred Ayer (A.J.Ayer) "I strongly recommend to you a new translation of Lao Tzu from a very remarkable translator, a Chinese lady Lee Sun Chen Org, who deeply believes in the importance of this work for humanity." --Professor Sir Karl Popper "You should make an effort to let the world know of the true Laozi. I like both your Chinese and English translations of Daodejing." --Professor Chern Shiing-Shen陳省身教授 The authentic philosophical Daoism was originated by Laozi through his meditation (private) and philosophizing(public). He has organized the piecemeal whimsical poetic thinking and incorporated them into his framework; that is the Daoism of Laozi. His book Daodejing embodies an integral framework-and that should be tackled through philosophy. However, the language of his book is nearly four thousand years old; this hardship should be tackled through the Chinese hermeneutic. In addition, Laozi's philosophical Daoism should be discerned from popular religious Daoism, a medley of fanciful thoughts and folklore. Accordingly, the single step to start the long and arduous journey to fathom the very deep wisdom of Laozi is to follow the roadmap of each individual's striving to understands oneself spiritually(self-realization) and the world scientifically. Chen Lee Sun(aka Lee Sun Chen Org): A self-taught and self-critical pursuer of truth as well as the meaning of life. She was a life-long follower of Laozi's philosophy--Laoism, but attended Oxford University to study Western philosophy through winning a full scholarship awarded by Government in Taiwan. She has also worked for an MA on linguistics and Chinese hermeneutic in the University of California, Davis. Bertrand Ruseell had great influence on her in her early days. Later her mentor was A.J. Ayer. Most recently her philosophical thinking moved closer to Karl Popper's. Nevertheless Laozi's thinking has had been her greatest influence.

Anxious China written by Li Zhang and has been published by University of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-04 with Social Science categories.

The breathless pace of China’s economic reform has brought about deep ruptures in socioeconomic structures and people’s inner landscape. Faced with increasing market-driven competition and profound social changes, more and more middle-class urbanites are turning to Western-style psychological counseling to grapple with their mental distress. This book offers an in-depth ethnographic account of how an unfolding “inner revolution” is reconfiguring selfhood, psyche, family dynamics, sociality, and the mode of governing in post-socialist times. Li Zhang shows that anxiety—broadly construed in both medical and social terms—has become a powerful indicator for the general pulse of contemporary Chinese society. It is in this particular context that Zhang traces how a new psychotherapeutic culture takes root, thrives, and transforms itself across a wide range of personal, social, and political domains.

Modern Chinese Counter Enlightenment written by Peng Hsiao-yen and has been published by Hong Kong University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-06-06 with Philosophy categories.

In Modern Chinese Counter-Enlightenment: Affect, Reason, and the Transcultural Lexicon, Peng Hsiao-yen argues that a trend of Counter-Enlightenment had grown from the late Qing to the May Fourth era in the 1910s to the 1920s and continued to the 1940s. She demonstrates how Counter-Enlightenment was manifested with case studies such as Lu Xun’s writings in the late 1900s, the Aesthetic Education movement from the 1910s to 1920s, and the Science and Lifeview debate in the 1920s. During the period, the life philosophy movement, highlighting the epistemic debate on affect and reason, is connected with its counterparts in Germany, France, and Japan. The movement had widespread and long-term impact on Chinese philosophy and literature. Using the transcultural lexicon as methodology, this book traces how the German term Lebensanschauung (lifeview), a key concept in Rudolf Eucken’s life philosophy, constituted a global tide of Counter-Enlightenment that influenced the thought of leading Chinese intellectuals in the Republican era. Peng contends that Chinese intellectuals’ transcultural connections with others in the philosophical pursuit of knowledge triggered China’s self-transformation. She has successfully reconstructed the missing link in the Chinese theater of the worldwide dialectic of Enlightenment and Counter-Enlightenment. “This book can be considered a milestone in modern Chinese and cultural studies. It is also the most ambitious attempt in developing a new kind of interdisciplinary studies—an attempt that bears a philosophic weight and cuts across the disciplines of Sinology, comparative literature, intellectual history, and translation studies. At the same time, it seeks to demonstrate a new theory of ‘Transcultural Lexicon’ which should appeal to all scholars interested in cultural theories.” —Leo Ou-fan Lee, Chinese University of Hong Kong “In the age ruled by the myth of technoscientific triumphalism, this timely and refreshing book unearths a critical strand of thought and sensibility against enlightenment rationality in modern China. Drawing on historical archives and debates, Peng Hsiao-yen stages a compelling critique of industrial modernity and the pursuit of wealth and power at the cost of emotional ties, community, and organic lifeways.” —Ban Wang, Stanford University

The Crossing Of Heaven written by Karl Gustafson and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-05 with Mathematics categories.

Among the group of physics honors students huddled in 1957 on a Colorado mountain watching Sputnik bisect the heavens, one young scientist was destined, three short years later, to become a key player in America’s own top-secret spy satellite program. One of our era’s most prolific mathematicians, Karl Gustafson was given just two weeks to write the first US spy satellite’s software. The project would fundamentally alter America’s Cold War strategy, and this autobiographical account of a remarkable academic life spent in the top flight tells this fascinating inside story for the first time. Gustafson takes you from his early pioneering work in computing, through fascinating encounters with Nobel laureates and Fields medalists, to his current observations on mathematics, science and life. He tells of brushes with death, being struck by lightning, and the beautiful women who have been a part of his journey.

Shakespeare Survey is a yearbook of Shakespeare studies and production. Since 1948 Survey has published the best international scholarship in English and many of its essays have become classics of Shakespeare criticism. Each volume is devoted to a theme, or play, or group of plays; each also contains a section of reviews of the previous year's textual and critical studies and of major British performances. The books are illustrated with a variety of Shakespearean images and production photographs. The current editor of Survey is Peter Holland. The first eighteen volumes were edited by Allardyce Nicoll, numbers 19-33 by Kenneth Muir and numbers 34-52 by Stanley Wells. The virtues of accessible scholarship and a keen interest in performance, from Shakespeare's time to our own, have characterised the journal from the start. For the first time, numbers 1-50 are being reissued in paperback, available separately and as a set.

Religion In French Feminist Thought written by Morny Joy and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-19 with Religion categories.

Religion in French Feminist Thought: Critical Perspectives brings together some of the leading modern religious responses to major French feminist writings on religion. It considers central figures such as Hélène Cixous, Julia Kristeva, Luce Irigaray and Catherine Clément, and its focus on questions of divinity, subjectivity, and ethics provides an accessible introduction to an area of growing philosophical interest. Illustrating the ways in which French feminism has become a valuable tool in feminist efforts to rethink religion, and responding to its promise as an intellectual resource for religious philosophy in the future, Religion in French Feminist Thought is ideal both for independent use and as a companion book to French Feminists on Religion (Routledge, 2001).
