Set in Belgium shortly after the Allies drove out the Nazis, this novel contains little plot to speak of; rather, it consists of a series of vignettes profiling a few dozen quasi-anonymous characters (many referred to as simply whats-his-name), everyday people whose lives have been made absurd and uncomfortable, if not outright miserable, by the war.

For eight months in 1970, Captain John Martin did his duty in the US Army in South Vietnam. On a typical day, his job was to find and kill Vietnamese. On the next day, he might try to save the same Vietnamese with medicine, hammers and nails. On a typical night inside the wire, the enemy had a different face--drunks, drug addicts, spies and assassins.Yet, the "little war" that he battled for decades at home was even more dangerous, destructive and difficult to understand. His little war is the same that combat veterans fight and they often fight it alone. Even today, far too many of these veterans who've survived the big war lose the little war. This is the candid story of John's two wars and the people who helped him survive.

Indeed it was splendid for the American public, but for the Rough Riders and other soldiers it was as grim, dirty, and bloody as any other war.

The war to end all wars, people said in 1918. Not for long. By 1919, White Russians were fighting Bolshevik Reds for control of their country, and Winston Churchill (then Secretary of State for War) wanted to see Communism 'strangled in its cradle'. So a volunteer R.A.F. squadron, flying Sopwith Camels, went there to duff up the Reds. 'There's a splendid little war going on,' a British staff officer told them. 'You'll like it.' Looked like fun. But the war was neither splendid nor little. It was big and it was brutal, a grim conflict of attrition, marked by incompetence and corruption. Before it ended, the squadron wished that both sides would lose. If that was a joke, nobody was laughing.

A Tidy Little War written by William Wright and has been published by The History Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-08 with History categories.

In 1882 the British invaded Egypt in an audacious war that gave them control of the country, and the Suez Canal, for more than seventy years. William Wright gives the first full account of that hard-fought and hitherto neglected campaign, which was not nearly as 'tidy' as the British commander would later claim. Using unpublished documents and forgotten books, including the discovery of General Sir Garnet Wolseley's diaries, Wright highlights how the Egyptian War, climaxing in the dawn battle of Tel-el-Kebir was altogether a close-run thing. The major combined services operation of the late Victorian era also saw the Royal Navy sail into battle for the last time in its old glory and the book has the first full account of the Bombardment of Alexandria.

Charles Johnson Post (1873?1956) received not one but two handmade red flannel bellybands for protection against tropical fevers when he enlisted as a private in 1898 with the 71st New York Infantry. He was paid a monthly wage of $13.00, with an additional $1.30 combat pay per month. Setting off for what he later termed "the little wars that are the mere trivia of history," he came back to write "a mild chronicle of many little men who were painting on a big canvas, and of their little epic routines of life, with a common death at their elbow. It is only the little, but keen, tribulations that made the epic routine of an old-fashioned war."
