'The concept of the "self" has remained puzzling and controversial. Indeed, far from gaining clarity, it seems to become ever more complex; for many different people, starting from different premises and having different goals have come to "appropriate" this term. The author has made what seems to me to be a most valuable contribution by sticking firmly to an experiential approach. The author has thought hard and deeply about the different ways in which we experience the "I" and drawn on his own "I" experience as well as on those of his patients and Jung himself. 'The author tells us in his introduction that the main aim of his book is to illustrate the migratory nature of the feeling of "I" and that the goal of analysis is to "facilitate and open up interaction and intercommunication between our various selves".

How do identities shape and react to the socio-economic landscape? I draw from paradigms in cultural anthropology, organizational behavior, and sociology to dissect how distinct elements of individual identity inform and transform social interactions within corporate, work-life, and social class structures. In my first study, I provide evidence for the role of similarity and dissimilarity in visual (e.g., age, gender) and psychological (i.e., personality) attributes among CEOs on strategic imitation following underperformance. In the second project, I examine how romantic couples' joint preferences for integration or segmentation of their work and home spheres influence their domestic harmony, zooming into the context of remote work. In the final project, I explore how social class disparities among conversation partners influence the amount and type of information about the self, conveyed during the interaction. I address my projects by combining analytical strategies designed for the study of similarities and differences - e.g., spline regression and response surface analysis - with techniques aimed to capture the complexity of individual identity - e.g., surveys, archival data, and natural language processing. My research bridges theoretical and methodological paradigms in the social sciences, underscoring the multiplicity of the self as a critical nexus for interdisciplinary dialogue.

This Fall 2004/Spring 2005 (III, 1&2) double-issue of Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge demonstrates the extent to which the sociology of self-knowledge as advanced by this journal from its inception can serve as both a course topic as well as a pedagogical strategy in teaching sociology and related subjects. The issue includes student papers of various faculty at UMass Boston and a symposium of student (and faculty) papers organized by Khaldoun Samman from Macalester College. Samman had earlier taken the step of turning his senior seminar into a course on the sociology of self-knowledge and encouraging his students, all graduating seniors at Macalester, to subject their own lives and “troubles” to their sociological imaginations. The student papers included in the issue as a whole are highly demonstrative of how self and socially critical and liberating the sociology of self-knowledge can be.
