An urgent exploration of caring and mothering on a planet in crisis In a swell of sea-linked essays, Christina Rivera explores the kinship between marine animals, humans, and Earth’s blue womb. Rivera’s investigative questions begin with the toxic burden of her body and spiral out—to a grieving orca, a hunted manta ray, a pregnant sea turtle, a spawning salmon, an “endling” porpoise, and the “mother culture” of sperm whales—as she redefines what it means to mother and defend a collective future. Braiding memoir with embodied climate science, Rivera challenges that it’s not anthropomorphism to feel deep connection to nonhuman species and proposes that gathering in collective grief is essential amid the sixth mass extinction. For ecofeminists, fans of Rachel Carson and Terry Tempest Williams—and for anyone who feels themself disintegrate in the presence of the sea—My Oceans offers a timely and wondrous descent into the deep waters of interconnection in which we swim.

Sunflower written by Andrew Collins and has been published by Xlibris Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-23 with Poetry categories.

This collection of poetry is a reflection on life. I created some of these from the age of 10 up to my current age; 20. I am aware that my naivety to some issues may be reflected in the meaning of some of the poems, but it is this naivety which propelled me into mastering the art of poetry and understanding how a few words can change someone’s life. I hope that this book will leave you questioning something about your life; and from that question you will find the answer. Inspirations link to Shakespeare, Duffy, Byron & Keats. These literature legends to me captivate everything there is to the art of the English language; the pronunciation of words, the ambiguity to a sentence which can catapult any emotion at any time and finally the linguistically beautiful style to which you read them. Through manipulating my emotions and views of life from a young age I feel I have been able to pen poems which are relevant and hard hitting. I find that if your own work can move you to tears or laughter; then there is a gem which needs to be discovered. This book highlights issues which the media tip-toe around; child abuse, murder, reasons for war, social mobility, ethnicity, sexuality and rape. However; this book also looks at the highs of society, love, personal wealth, joy, success and acceptance to our own faults. I am grateful to this collection even though I created them as I feel deep down they created me. The messages in the book will allow you as the reader to become inevitably the writer; possibly wanting to indulge to the point you feel this is aimed at you. Many poems in this collection have totally different styles, meanings and impacts to the last. Although this may not be considered the most consistent of reads; I have purposely created an ecliptic collection which reflects the constant changes of life. This is a somewhat biography of the evolving world as I grew in it; I strongly feel this has never been done and as I read them, I can see how I have strengthened as an individual in society. ‘The Child’ & ’My Hero’ are two of the poems I created when I was 10 years of age; the first one has always been considered as a reflection of my life; however it is the opposite. Even at that age I was able to put myself into another’s situation and saw a poem being penned which I would always look back on to draw inspiration. ‘My Hero’ was dedicated to all those who have lost their life trying to create a better world; not necessarily in the war. This book is strong minded and hard-hitting. I am very certain of myself and this is dominant in the poetry. This strength creates what others may not feel comfortable reading but deep down know that these issues exist and will carry on existing unless real action is taken. A mixture of political and emotional subjects; and sometimes both inter-twined; this book is aimed towards anyone in the general public. However, the subjects may not be apparent to everyone as some are representative of my age and not of my surroundings. Overall; I hope that the reader gets the satisfaction reading my poetry as I did writing it. The magic of poetry I feel has faded greatly within education and possibly society. I feel that the national curriculum needs to establish a better way of understanding what hundreds years of poetry has given us to date. I believe in myself as a poet and as a person; but most importantly I believe in this book as a collection of great poetry which I know will leave you wanting to read more. Thank you for taking the time to read this descriptor and I hope you enjoy the book. Yours Andrew Collins.

The planets and their effect on the human race are at the heart of this stellar collection of provocative science fiction short stories, Adventures in the Cosmos by Darryl L. Gopaul. A second menacing moon appears in one story, which awakens powerful new forces on Earth. In another story, humanoids venture onto Earth and start to behave very differently than they usually do, right up until the moment they are called back to their home planet. In other stories, humans face a new biological phenomenon or gain new abilities, like telepathy. Hinting that strange, powerful forces are quietly guiding humans on Earth, Gopaul probes the possibilities that exist in the deepest pockets of outer space and right here on our home planet. Inspiring, stunning, and sometimes shocking, Adventures in the Cosmos shows that while the universe is our new frontier, it will take not just bravado but understanding to conquer or control it. A thinking person's collection of sci fi, Adventures in the Cosmos is both beautifully written and bolstered by the expertise of Gopaul, who is a microbiologist. In story after story, he prods you to see the earth, the planets, and yourself in new and original ways.

Weathering is atmospheric, geological, temporal, transformative. It implies exposure to the elements and processes of wearing down, disintegration, or accrued patina. Weathering can also denote the ways in which subjects and objects resist and pass through storms and adversity. This volume contemplates weathering across many fields and disciplines; its contributions examine various surfaces, environments, scales, temporalities, and vulnerabilities. What does it mean to weather or withstand? Who or what is able to pass through safely? What is lost or gained in the process?

For fans of Girl in Pieces, All the Bright Places, and Girl, Interrupted comes a haunting and breathtaking YA contemporary debut novel that packs a powerful message: hope can be found in the darkness. "Raw, heartbreaking, and poignant." —New York Times-bestselling author Kathleen Glasgow A Chicago Public Library and Kirkus Best Book of the Year! Seventeen-year-old Ellie had no hope left. Yet the day after she dies by suicide, she finds herself in the midst of an out-of-body experience. She is a spectator, swaying between past and present, retracing the events that unfolded prior to her death. But there are gaps in her memory, fractured pieces Ellie is desperate to re-assemble. There's her mother, a songbird who wanted to break free from her oppressive cage. The boy made of brushstrokes and goofy smiles who brought color into a gray world. Her brooding father, with his sad puppy eyes and clenched fists. And Ellie's determined to find out why a piece of her was left behind. Told in epistolary-like style, Rocky Callen's deeply moving A Breath Too Late sensitively examines the beautiful and terrible moments that make up a life and the possibilities that live in even the darkest of places. Perfect for fans of the critically-acclaimed Speak, I’ll Give You the Sun, and If I Stay. "An exquisitely played love song to life, in all of its hurts, wonders, memories, and loves." –Jeff Zentner, Morris Award winning author of The Serpent King and Goodbye Days "A haunting story, punctuated with brilliant points of hope and light. This is an important story. A necessary story . . . Callen’s writing radiates with passion, honesty and love." —National Book Award finalist and Printz Award–winning author An Na
