This is a new volume that replaces my earlier cruise book for the Panama Canal. This book includes information on both cruises through the historic old Panama Canal locks and the new, larger locks that accommodate major size cruise vessels. The book also includes a chapter on all of the ports of call that are used by the cruise lines in establishing their Panama Canal itineraries, as well as valuable information on the geography, history and culture of each of the countries that cruise ships visit on this coast to coast route. Unlike the mass market tour books, this one is designed specifically for Panama Canal transits between the Atlantic and Pacific ports of the United States. It offers suggested shore excursions, the finest places to dine and the best places to shop. The book is based upon the author's 46 years of university teaching experience in geography and history plus extensive personal travel experience, including numerous passages through the Panama Canal. While lecturing for a major five-star cruise line, the author had the good fortune to narrate the transit of the canal for shipboard guests. You will find this to be the most complete Panama Canal cruise guide on he market.

Margaret Armatage drives a Cadillac. Not bad for a small town girl who, at fourteen, was left orphaned and penniless with her sister Betty, in the care of their drinking and gambling brother. Within a year or two Margaret was longing for the protection of a good man in a happy marriage that her sister found. She was not so lucky. Instead she married an abusive older man. No father figure, Jack was unpredictable and mean, with a desire for sex that had no love in it. When the couple moved to Kamloops, Margaret went to work in a dress shop and a local jewelry store. Her English parents taught her good manners; now she learned how to dress. Her classic good looks and new sense of style before long had heads turning in the small interior town. She began to think of starting her own business. Literally taking up hammer and paintbrush, she helped build a motel. Soon she was the owner of the Mayfair Auto Court. Her natural friendliness and determination to make the motel the best in town meant many repeat customers, including the local professional hockey team. When Jack left town she was free to live life on her own terms. There has been no shortage of men in Margaret's life. At eighty-four, she has been married four times. Two of the marriages were wonderful. Both husbands shared her love of travel and appreciated life her skill as a homemaker and gardner. The other two marriages were disastrous. This is the story of Margaret and her four husbands.

This is a full color edition of the book "Cruising Through the Panama Canal," Revised for 2016-17 that already exists, but with all photographs and maps in black and white. These books are printed by Amazon only when ordered. Thus the printing cost in color is relatively high, necessitating a higher price for sale. But several of my readers have asked that full color editions be made availableThe Panama Canal, which is now in its second century of operation, is an absolute marvel of engineering. There is an elegance to the way in which the locks operate to lift ships from the sea to the man-made cut and artificial lake at an elevation of 85 feet above sea level. And after making the transit, crossing the Continental Divide, locks lower ships back down to sea level on the other side. Today there are now new locks on both the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the canal to enable even larger ships to make the transit and thus save thousands of miles or kilometers on their trans oceanic voyages. The Panama Canal is a major link in the global pattern of shipping, the other great link being the Suez Canal. However Suez is a sea level canal with no locks. It is a straight cut across the land and it lacks the drama and magnitude of engineering seen in the Panama Canal. Taking a cruise that will make the transit of the Panama Canal is one of the most memorable of voyages. Itineraries vary between those that travel between the eastern and western coasts of the United States or Canada to those that travel from North America and journey around the continent of South America. And for long itineraries between Australia or New Zealand and Europe, a transit of the Panama Canal is the shortest distance. No matter how you do it, a transit of the Panama Canal should be high on your list of future journeys. This book provides extensive details on the geography, history of development and the actual transit in both directions. It also offers port information based upon the most common Panama Canal cruise, which is between California and Florida.
