There is an elegance to the way in which the locks operate to lift ships from the sea to the man-made cut and artificial lake at an elevation of 85 feet above sea level. And after making the transit, crossing the Continental Divide, locks lower ships back down to sea level on the other side. Today there are now new locks on both the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the canal to enable even larger ships to make the transit and thus save thousands of miles or kilometers on their trans oceanic voyages. The Panama Canal is a major link in the global pattern of shipping, the other great link being the Suez Canal. However Suez is a sea level canal with no locks. It is a straight cut across the land and it lacks the drama and magnitude of engineering seen in the Panama Canal. Itineraries vary between those that travel between the eastern and western coasts of the United States or Canada to those that travel from North America and journey around the continent of South America. And for long itineraries between Australia or New Zealand and Europe, a transit of the Panama Canal is the shortest distance.
