When the zombie apocalypse hits the quiet Asheville, NC subdivision of Whispering Pines, the residents don't turn to the police or the military. Nope. They rely on their iron-fisted Home Owners Association! Which Jace Stanford and his family aren’t too keen on. Undead hordes are hard enough to deal with in a post-apocalyptic hellscape, who needs HOA fines too? Filled with blood, gore, plenty of bad jokes, cannibals, dreaded HOA covenants, and a whole lot of snark, Z-Burbia is guaranteed to thrill and entertain! Welcome to life in Z-Burbia! Reviews- “The first novel in Jake Bible’s series Z-Burbia hooked me. What appeared to be a jokey take on zombie fiction quickly develops some great characters and story.” -BoingBoing.net “For those still not convinced about the zombie genre, Z-Burbia is worth a read if only for its female characters: Jake Bible doesn’t have time for vapid whimpering damsels in distress. Oh no. Bible’s characters are thinking, acting, feisty sorts.” -Lee Murray, Bram Stoker Award-winning novelist “5.0 out of 5 stars 100% Zombie - and more. Quick, strong, gory, exciting, explosive, non-stop action. The opening part of the book does warn there will be gore, which if you are reading a zombie apocalypse book should not be a shock. Mr. Bible delivers all these. BUT he also delivers believable characters with different reasons for doing what they do. A developing political structure rising out of the ashes of civilization - from the Home-Owners Association tyrant to the constant battle between urban-and-rural. Big battles and little battles - zombies being weaponized, and parents raising kids in the Z-hellscape to be responsible adults. The layers take this book to the next level.” -Erin Penn, Vine Voice, amazon.com “I love my zombies and this series is by far my favorite. The main character is just amazingly done, cause I agree that we all need a laugh in the zombie apocalypse.” -UglyCasanova, 5-star Goodreads review Other books by Jake Bible: By Series: The Apex Trilogy (Dead Mech, The Americans, Metal & Ash) The Kaiju Winter Series Roak: Galactic Bounty Hunter Series The Mega/Team Grendel Thrillers The Flipside Sagas Max Rage: Intergalactic Badass! Visions of the American city in post-apocalyptic ruin permeate literary and popular fiction, across print, visual, audio and digital media. American Cities in Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction explores the prevalence of these representations in American culture, drawing from a wide range of primary and critical works from the early-twentieth century to today. Beginning with science fiction in literary magazines, before taking in radio dramas, film, video games and expansive transmedia franchises, Robert Yeates argues that post-apocalyptic representations of the American city are uniquely suited for explorations of contemporary urban issues. Examining how the post-apocalyptic American city has been repeatedly adapted and repurposed to new and developing media over the last century, this book reveals that the content and form of such texts work together to create vivid and immersive fictional spaces in ways that would otherwise not be possible. Chapters present media-specific analyses of these texts, situating them within their historical contexts and the broader history of representations of urban ruins in American fiction. Original in its scope and cross-media approach, American Cities in Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction both illuminates little-studied texts and provides provocative new readings of familiar works such as Blade Runner and The Walking Dead, placing them within the larger historical context of imaginings of the American city in ruins.

The Knowledge written by Lewis Dartnell and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-17 with Social Science categories.

How would you go about rebuilding a technological society from scratch? If our technological society collapsed tomorrow what would be the one book you would want to press into the hands of the postapocalyptic survivors? What crucial knowledge would they need to survive in the immediate aftermath and to rebuild civilization as quickly as possible? Human knowledge is collective, distributed across the population. It has built on itself for centuries, becoming vast and increasingly specialized. Most of us are ignorant about the fundamental principles of the civilization that supports us, happily utilizing the latest—or even the most basic—technology without having the slightest idea of why it works or how it came to be. If you had to go back to absolute basics, like some sort of postcataclysmic Robinson Crusoe, would you know how to re-create an internal combustion engine, put together a microscope, get metals out of rock, or even how to produce food for yourself? Lewis Dartnell proposes that the key to preserving civilization in an apocalyptic scenario is to provide a quickstart guide, adapted to cataclysmic circumstances. The Knowledge describes many of the modern technologies we employ, but first it explains the fundamentals upon which they are built. Every piece of technology rests on an enormous support network of other technologies, all interlinked and mutually dependent. You can’t hope to build a radio, for example, without understanding how to acquire the raw materials it requires, as well as generate the electricity needed to run it. But Dartnell doesn’t just provide specific information for starting over; he also reveals the greatest invention of them all—the phenomenal knowledge-generating machine that is the scientific method itself. The Knowledge is a brilliantly original guide to the fundamentals of science and how it built our modern world.

When Alton leaves his rural male community, he is shocked to discover he is expected to provide sexual services to wealthy women. He can't do it. He has someone special on his mind. Morty Donaldson is studying when his roommate Pete bursts into his dorm room chased by undead zombie-like monsters. Barefoot and armed with his shotgun, Morty fights the creatures but quickly learns they cannot be easily killed. As they subdue the monsters and force them into a closet, it becomes apparent Pete knows more than he's saying. Morty struggles to get Pete to tell the truth while searching for a way to defeat the monsters as they spread through town and the United States. It becomes apparent that if the monsters are zombies, they have little in common with the B-movie variety and are more similar to vampires. But that designation is not quite right either. To make matters worse, Morty stumbles into his ex-girlfriend, a woman who doesn't hesitate to manipulate him to get what she wants. Morty is put to the test in this tale of mayhem and destruction while he struggles with an enemy that cannot be defeated through conventional means. This action-packed post-apocalyptic urban fantasy zombie thriller takes readers on a journey that rips them through the pages to the cataclysmic ending. Pick up your copy today! Previously published as The Containment Team. Sneak Peek: THE DOOR TO my dorm room burst open and Pete Sanders dove in, slamming it shut behind him as he cursed at the top of his lungs. I looked up just in time to see him sever a couple of gray fingers from somebody on the other side when the door was forced to a close. The dismembered appendages fell to the floor and bounced as they rolled to a stop. He looked down at the body parts in surprise as if he hadn't noticed the fingers that had been clawing at the door when he'd swung it shut. I stood up, knocking my chair over, stubbing the toe of my bare foot in the process. "What's going on? Who was that? They need help." The door was solid wood, and the jamb was made from metal. I would never have thought it could be used to cut flesh and bone, but Pete was a big man and had swung it hard and fast. The football team had tried to recruit him multiple times, but he'd always refused. It was a reflection of how poor of a team we had that when they saw a big dude on campus, they couldn't leave him alone. A scream came from outside, it sounded like the howl of a wild animal, more of a roar than anything else. It was followed by several loud bangs as if somebody with a bat was beating at the door from the other side. "It couldn't have been a long incubation period," Pete muttered as he locked the door and stepped away. "There wasn't anything wrong with them yesterday." He shook his head. "Why did I have to go in tonight? I could have just stayed away for the night." The last part was said quietly to himself. In truth, I wondered if he'd forgotten I was with him in our room. "Who's out there?" I asked again, forcing my voice to be calm. "What, not who, would be a little more accurate."

Written originally for a special issue of The New Yorker and reissued here with a new forward by the author, Within the Context of No Context is George W. S. Trow's brilliant exposition on the state of American culture and twentieth-century life. Published to widespread acclaim, Within the Context of No Context became an immediate classic and is, to this day, a favorite work of writers and critics alike. Both a chilling commentary on the times in which it was written and an eerie premonition of the future, Trow's work locates and traces, describes and analyzes the components of change in contemporary America -- a culture increasingly determined by the shallow worlds of consumer products, daytime television, and celebrity heroes. "This elegant little book is essential reading for anyone interested in the demise, the terminal silliness, of our culture." -- John Irving, The New York Times Book Review; "In this elegant, poignant essay, written with the grace of a master stylist, George Trow articulates the accelerated impermanence of American culture with a precision that is both flaunting and devastating." -- Rudy Wurlitrer; "Within the Context of No Context is a masterpiece of the century that belongs on a shelf next to Theodore Adorno's Minima Moralia and Guy Debord's The Society of the Spectacle." -- Michael Tolkin; "Within the Context of No Context may appear to be a book of the mind, for it is suffused with such a keen intelligence, but it is actually a book of the heart -- passionate, brave, and stirring." -- Sue Halpern.
