'My' Self on Camera is the first book to explore first person narrative documentary in China's post-Mao era. Since the emergence of the individual as an ever more important social figure in China, this mode of independent filmmaking and cultural practice has become increasingly significant. Combining the approach of cultural ethnography, interviews, and textual analysis of selected films, this study examines the motivations, key aesthetic features and ethical tensions of presenting the self on camera, as well as the socio-political, cultural and technical conditions surrounding its practice. This book problematises how the sense of self and subjectivities are understood in contemporary China, and provides illuminating new insights on the changing notion of the individual through cinema.

This is the story of the internationally acclaimed American woman Margaret Bourke-White, who for over thirty years made photographic history: as the first photographer to see the artistic and storytelling possibilities in American industry, as the first to write social criticism with a lens, and as the most distinguished and venturesome foreign correspondent-with-a-camera to report wars, politics and social and political revolution on three continents. In this poignant autobiography, Bourke-White details her fight against Parkinson’s disease, and recounts tales of her struggles to master her art and craft, of photographing Stalin, Gandhi and many other notables, of being torpedoed off North Africa while reporting World War II, of flying combat missions, of photographing the dread murder camps of Nazi Germany, of touring Tobacco Road to produce the book You Have Seen Their Faces with Erskine Caldwell (whom she later married), of adventures—and wonderful picture-taking—in the mines of South Africa, in the frozen North, in war-torn Korea. Illustrated throughout with over 70 of Margaret Bourke-White’s fine photographs, this is the great life story of a great American, greatly yet modestly told.

Looking back now, even I think my plan was nothing short of a pipe dream, wishful thinking at best, an ad hoc solution to a situation that is known for making grown men cry. Figuratively speaking, I was between a rock and a hard place in the worst kind of way. Literally, I was locked in a cage, and the only exit was to cross the Mexican border due south and spend the rest of my life in a country commonly referred to as the drug cartel capital of the world. The title of drug cartel capital of the world is, of course, hyperbole. However, things like assassinations, kidnappings, beheadings, and news flashes of quiet little cities being ripped to shreds from stray bullets that were meant to eliminate the competition, as rivaling drug cartels battle it out in broad daylight in a barrage of turf wars that seem to appear out of nowhere, this is reality for the estimated 110 million people living below our southern border. Now would probably be a good time to point out a few extenuating circumstances like the fact that I didn't speak Spanish, I had less than $1,000 to my name, absolutely no papers and no form of identification whatsoever, and, last but not least, my name would soon be added to the federal marshal's list of most wanted criminals. I would be at the very bottom of the list but still on it. For the life of me, I still don't understand why my plan sounded like a good idea back then, and as far as how I mustered up the courage to set this plan into motion is still a mystery.

Warnings Against Myself written by David Stevenson and has been published by University of Washington Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-01 with Sports & Recreation categories.
From his youthful second ascent of the north ridge of Mount Kennedy in the Yukon’s Saint Elias Range, an in-and-out on skis for which he had not entirely learned how to ski, to a recent excursion across the Harding Icefield conceived under the influence of rain and whiskey, David Stevenson chronicles several decades of a life unified by a preoccupation with climbing. Reflective and literary, and also entertaining and funny, his accounts move across the great climbing locations of the western United States, with forays into the spires of the Alps, and slip freely in time from the author’s childhood, when he could not wait to head west, to his adulthood, with a wife and two sons, in which he still feels compelled by a longing to be on the heights.
