The Iranian revolution of 1979 launched a vast, global diaspora, with many Iranians establishing new lives in the United States. In the four decades since, the diaspora has expanded to include not only those who emigrated immediately after the revolution but also their American-born children, more recent immigrants, and people who married into Iranian families, all of whom carry their own stories of trauma, triumph, adversity, and belonging that reflect varied and nuanced perspectives on what it means to be Iranian or Iranian American. The essays in My Shadow Is My Skin are these stories. This collection brings together thirty-two authors, both established and emerging, whose writing captures the diversity of diasporic experiences. Reflecting on the Iranian American experience over the past forty years and shedding new light on themes of identity, duality, and alienation in twenty-first-century America, the authors present personal narratives of immigration, sexuality, marginalization, marriage, and religion that offer an antidote to the news media’s often superficial portrayals of Iran and the people who have a connection to it. My Shadow Is My Skin pulls back the curtain on a community that rarely gets to tell its own story.

In the blink of an eye, a person's entire existence can change forever. At eighteen, Samantha Michael learned this in the most challenging way imaginable, when she was in a severe car crash at the hands of an impaired driver. After being rescued from the accident, Samantha was comatose and barely alive. Later, as she emerged from her coma, she would come to discover that terrifying moment was not the end but the beginning-the beginning of a lifetime of challenges and changes, tribulations and triumphs. With wisdom, grace and humour, Samantha recounts the aftermath of her injury and her personal, medical and emotional struggles to win back the happiness which was taken from her. She describes the impact on her family and friends, the lasting physical trauma with which she had to struggle, the pain of deferred dreams and the joy of eventually reclaiming her life and self, piece by piece, day by day. The Beauty of My Shadow will pluck a range of emotional chords as the reader experiences the euphoria, hope, doubt, fear, love and other feelings Samantha herself lived through in the days since her life was forever altered. Written candidly and from the heart, Samantha's story gives hope to those who have suffered similar trauma, as well as those who are simply wrestling with the ordinary challenges of daily life. Her memoir serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and versatility of the human spirit-that while adversity derails our path in life, undefeatable perseverance often helps us discover another route to take. 'They won't know you, the you that's hidden somewhere in the castle of your skin' Nine-year-old G. leads a life of quiet mischief crab catching, teasing preachers and playing among the pumpkin vines. His sleepy fishing village in 1930s Barbados is overseen by the English landlord who lives on the hill, just as their 'Little England' is watched over by the Mother Country. Yet gradually, G. finds himself awakening to the violence and injustice that lurk beneath the apparent order of things. As the world he knows begins to crumble, revealing the bruising secret at its heart, he is spurred ever closer to a life-changing decision. Sixteen-year-old Dara Samnang lives a seemingly ordinary life in Long Beach, California, juggling school, a part-time job, and friendships. But beneath the surface of her everyday routine lies a hidden legacy, a past shrouded in silence. One sweltering afternoon, a forgotten chest in the garage reveals a treasure trove of intricately carved shadow puppets, whispering tales of a Cambodia Dara has only glimpsed in her father’s melancholic music. These puppets unlock a door to a past she never knew, a past haunted by the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge. Her father, Sorn, a once celebrated puppeteer, reluctantly agrees to teach Dara the ancient art, unveiling a world of myth and legend. But as Dara delves deeper into the vibrant world of shadow and light, Sorn’s stories transcend mythology, revealing fractured memories of starvation, fear, and unimaginable choices made under the brutal regime. Each puppet becomes a tangible piece of his past, some representing real people lost or betrayed in his desperate fight for survival. Faced with a life forever altered by history, Dara grapples with the weight of her father’s secrets. An invitation to perform at the Cambodian-American Community Center presents a daunting dilemma: should she expose her father’s past, shattering the fragile peace he’s built, or perpetuate the silence? As the performance draws near, Dara finds solace in the vibrant tapestry of Long Beach’s Cambodian community, connecting with others who carry the same unspoken history. Her friendships deepen, her art flourishes, and the stories of the puppets intertwine with her own coming-of-age journey. Can she find the courage to bring her family’s story to light, weaving a tapestry of healing and reconciliation from the threads of a shattered past? In a breathtaking culmination of art, memory, and courage, Dara must choose between silence and truth, between protecting her father and honoring her heritage. The Shadow Puppeteer’s Daughter is a powerful story of resilience, identity, and the enduring power of storytelling to illuminate even the darkest corners of the human experience.

We spoke of instances to be Enjoyed in between kisses and Soft embraces, promised Nothing, expected Nothing. Though now we linger in an Inconformity where trust Is the anchor and Storm. It was your eyes that held on To me, a Look ever so pleading for Comfort, for Help... Reflecting my own tears. It was your eyes, not Your skin, not Your lips, Your omission of Words. The imperfection that Enthralled, none of it, But your eyes. Even now we speak In silence, You cover your face, But I know what rests Behind those walls, For I hide it just as well. I see pain. zakrevski.tumblr.com

On a mountain that does not exist, there is a school where they teach the impossible. From his first day at the Academy, things have been difficult for Quay. Though he has surrendered his name, like every other acolyte at the magical school, Quay is the son of a disgraced professor, and he finds that his father’s old enemies are already lined up against him–while the professor’s own faction is just as suspicious. Quay refuses to take a side, but as his powers grow it becomes apparent that the damaged young boy may prove a greater threat than his father ever was. Deep in the Library of Shadows Quay finds a way to survive his father’s treacherous legacy, but the price is high indeed. "A mysterious and compelling read told in spookily disconnected first person narrative, delivered by a likeably unlikeable main character. A subtle and dreamlike tale." -- Sam Bowring, author of the Broken Well trilogy "What happens when the ordinary and everyday is not kind? What happens when we take the hard road and make the harsh, bad choices? Shadowmancy explores this... with relish." -- Gillian Polack, author of Year of the Fruitcake
