The first biography of the great black actor, activist, athlete--and tragic victim of the blacklist Imagine an actor as familiar to audiences as Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman are today--who is then virtually deleted from public memory. Such is the story of Canada Lee. Among the most respected black actors of the forties and a tireless civil rights advocate, Lee was unjustly dishonored, his name reduced to a footnote in the history of the McCarthy era, his death one of a handful directly attributable to the blacklist. Born in Harlem in 1907, Lee was a Renaissance man. A musical prodigy on violin and piano at eleven, by thirteen he had become a successful jockey and by his twenties a champion boxer. After wandering into auditions for the WPA Negro Theater Project, Lee took up acting and soon shot to stardom in Orson Welles's Broadway production of Native Son, later appearing in such classic films as Lifeboat and the original Cry, the Beloved Country. But Lee's meteoric rise to fame was followed by a devastating fall. Labeled a Communist by the FBI and HUAC as early as 1943, Lee was pilloried during the notorious spy trial of Judith Coplon in 1949, then condemned in longtime friend Ed Sullivan's column. He died in 1952, forty-five and penniless, a heartbroken casualty of a dangerous and conflicted time. Now, after nearly a decade of research, Mona Z. Smith revives the legacy of a man who was perhaps the blacklist's most tragic victim.

“Nauseous and queasy, my blood ran cold. I could no longer hold it back. As I further broke down in a cold sweat, tears uncontrollably rolled down my face. All I knew was pain. It didn’t stop coming; it never did anyway. Grappling with the suffocating and tormenting screams deep inside was exhausting enough. I didn’t need any more. I closed my eyes. I could no longer see a future. I saw the end. That was when I knew what Fear really was. “ For the past 18 years of her life, Emelyne had been facing multiple horrific medical diagnoses that kept surging at her one after another, nonstop. Fear, has weighed her treacherous life journey down even more over the years, forcing her to put up countless bone-crushing fights against it. This book is for you if you have lost a 'significant other'. This book is for you if you find yourself on a journey through grief, or are supporting someone else through their journey. The book charts my first year of being a widower, its chapters are a series of blog posts I wrote immediately after my beautiful wife, Claire, died. This book is ordered chronologically by days, then weeks then months, this allows you to dip into any time after your event which feels relevant to you and see what I was saying and thinking at that same time. Each blog post I wrote and therefore each chapter in this book is tagged, the website is searchable by each of those tags and I've used the same tags here for each chapter. The tags represent feelings, emotions and events. If you go to the index at the back of the book you can find those tags or themes and discover which of the chapters/blog posts will be most relevant to how you are feeling right now. As with the blog, I feel like I'm with you on your journey as you read this book... Just know you are not alone.

This book describes my life as a Christian. I became a Christian at the age of 9 in the First Baptist Church of Guymon, Oklahoma. I was called into special service at the age of 15 while living in Borger, Texas. I was chosen to lead the singing in the Calvary Baptist Church, Borger, at the age of 17. I was fortunate enough to spend a weekend at the Glorieta, New Mexico church encampment before the church chose me to lead their Sunday morning music. I also was fortunate enough to go to youth camp in the Oklahoma panhandle as a young convert. This is where I learned to study and appreciate reading the Holy Bible. My life has taken many twists and turns along the way. I did not have a career in business. My time was spent as a missionary wherever I was sent. I did not stay too long in one place. I am now 64 years old and I am a member of Second Baptist Church, of Houston. I have attended Second for over 10 years. In the summer months, between my freshman and sophomore years in college, I sold Bible Encyclopedias door-to-door in the Spartanburg, South Carolina area.
