Living through a solid share of significant, historical events, I must admit it has been a hell of an exciting, history-filled life. The Great Depression, World WW II, my combat in the Korean War, Vietnam, the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the amazing technological breakthroughs, McCarthy times, the Kennedys, Nixon, the Clintons, the Bushes, 9/11, Trump, the turmoil with Russia and the Ukraine, the pandemic and “January 6” all contributed to the drama of living. My personal impressions and memories of people I knew of those times are included in this collection. For those too young to have experienced the times, I hope the stories bring some enlightenment. For those who were “there” during those events, I hope to restore some cherished memories

A beautifully written account of an idyllic childhood. Told in the first person against the milieu of show business, bounds of freedom and family idiosyncrasies. If only things were so straight forward. Instead this recount of the lifes transitions is juxtaposed against the backdrop of the second world war, bringing into question a sense of identity, belonging and loyalties. The author cleverly takes the reader along a cathartic journey of making sense of the past . Are we tied up and restricted by our history or do these events just pave the way towards what we are able to achieve?

This is a book of adventure, romance, decision, and time travel to one of history's most talked about times-- the Civil War. The Battle of Mansfield, LA was fought and won-- against all odds. Had the two superior officers for the Confederacy involved agreed to put their disagreements aside for the good of the South, the Battle would have changed the whole Civil War and given the South the victory for States' Rights. This book compares this battle to the battle in the marriage of Sophya Blackwell.

The Brownsville/East New York neighborhood of the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s is now but an almost faded memory, a “time warp” as it were. Today it is a neighborhood that has been eviscerated and exists only as a geographic locale. Through the collective memories of the famous and the not-so-famous, Jerry Chatanow and Bernie Schwartz have elicited and chronicled a treasure trove of anecdotes and remembrances that bring back to life a once vibrant and exhilarating neighborhood. The authors vividly transport the reader back to a bygone era of street games, egg creams, mello rolls and knishes, patriotism at the home front, plush movie palaces, the Dodgers, the Knicks, boxing venues, old time radio and the neighborhood settlement houses with its open doors waiting to welcome the teeming masses. Anyone from small town or big city who was ever enriched by the nurturing warmth, the loyalties and camaraderie of a “neighborhood” will enjoy this major contribution to the oral history of America. This is a story told within the context of this country’s transformation from “The Great Depression” to World War Two to “Baby Boomer” prosperity. The authors were both observers of and participants in what in retrospect proved to be a triumphant generation.

At age 21, William (Bill) Mackenzie Lowcock enlisted in the AIF and found himself in Singapore. A few months later, just shy of his 22nd birthday, he found himself a Prisoner of War. What followed for Bill was three years of forced POW labour on the infamous Thai-Burma Railway (the Death Railway). This is his story. --//-- from the Back Cover --//-- Sixteen-year-old William (Bill) Mackenzie Lowcock enlisted in the militia and, at the breakout of World War II, served on guard duty on various key infrastructures in Sydney and its surrounds. Keen to serve Australia, at age twenty-one, Bill joined the AIF and soon found himself in Singapore, serving as a Private in the 2/19 Infantry Battalion, Administrative HQ. Known to his comrades as “Lofty” thanks to his 6’2” height, Bill’s experiences in Singapore and Malaysia tell—in a matter-of-fact way—the realities of day-to-day military life. This all changed when in 1941, Japan entered the war. Just a few months later in 1942, just shy of Bill’s twenty-second birthday, he found himself a Prisoner of War when Singapore surrendered to the Japanese. What followed for Bill was three years of forced POW labour on the infamous Thai-Burma Railway. Known as the Death Railway, of the 13,000 Australians forced to work there, almost 3,000 perished. Despite many close calls, Bill emerged as one of the lucky ones. Bill’s story charts his experiences throughout this period, retold in Bill’s characteristically understated, humble tones, a candid story of survival—but told with humour and free of pessimism or woe despite obviously horrendous conditions. This book is dedicated to the memory of Private Bill Lowcock, and to all those who have served.
