This report presents the results of the evaluation of two species of insects for the biological control of Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.). One of the species is a native weevil, Litodactylus leucogaster (Marsh.), which attacks the flower spikes, and the other is an accidentally introduced European moth, Acentria nivea (Oliver), whose larvae feed on the leaves and stems. The biology of L. leucogaster was studied in detail and host-specificity tests were conducted with adults and larvae. Since it was determined to be specific to watermilfoils, it was released at Crystal River, Florida, on 22 August 1979. Two adults were captured at Crystal River in November indicating possible establishment. The pyralid moth, A. nivea, was difficult to rear in the laboratory. Since the females were active only one night, successful matings were rare in the small colony. Larval production was best in containers that were minimally disturbed. the larvae required water temperatures below 22 C for development though they could survive short periods at higher temperatures. The larvae were not specific to milfoil; however, A. nivea may still be of interest as a member of a complex of species which attack milfoil. (Author).

Herbicide concentration and exposure time relationships were developed for 2,4-D and the control of Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.), under laboratory conditions using concentrations, exposure times, and biomass similar to field conditions. Fourteen 2,4-D concentrations (0.5,1.0, and 2.0 mg acid equivalent (ae)/l) and exposure time (12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 hr) combinations were tested. Eurasian watermilfoil control was based on plant injury incurred, relative to that of untreated plants, and harvested biomass (4 weeks after treatment). Plant injury increased with increasing concentrations and exposure times to a threshold above which control was achieved. Severe Eurasian watermilfoil injury occurred in the 0.5 mg ae/l for 72-hr, 1.0 mg ae/l for 36-hr, and 2.0 mg ae/l for 24-hr exposures. Eurasian watermilfoil control was established in the 1.0 mg ae/l for 48 hr, and 2.0 mg ae/l for 36-hr, and 48-hr exposures. Control can be predicted for Eurasian watermilfoil treatments in both dynamic and static aquatic environments when plants remain in contact with 2,4-D concentrations greater than the developed threshold levels. Aquatic plant control, Eurasian watermilfoil; Herbicides. (mjm).

An attempt was made to develop an ecosystems approach for the control of the nuisance aquatic plant Eurasian watermilfoil, Myriophyllum spicatum L. To this end, a cellulolytic fungus, Mycoleptodiscus terrestris (Gerdemann) Ostazeski (M.t.), and a pectinolytic bacterium, Bacillus sp. strain P8 (BSP8), were isolated from the microbial populations naturally resident in the phyllosphere of this plant. These organisms grew compatibly with each other, were able to compete successfully with other microflora on the plant surface, and were able to resist the inhibitory action of phenolic compounds produced by the plants. Application of these organisms to the plant, after growth in appropriate media, resulted in plant decline and eventual death. The process of decline included hormone-like stress effects on the plant induced by BSP8 (internodal elongation), and increase in strongly pectinolytic microbial populations associated with the plant, and penetration into plant tissue by the fungal mycelium. Specificity trials of M. t. infectivity revealed it to be very weakly pathogenic to several aquatic species and terrestrial plants, and thereby without potential significant impact outside the area of designated application.

Studies reported previously have shown that inoculation of Myriophyllum spicatum and M. heterophyllum with enzyme-enhanced pectinolytic or cellulolytic microorganisms originally isolated from these species significantly accelerated plant necrosis. Subsequent studies, reported herein have attempted to assess plant response to inoculation under a variety of stress conditions, to define infection thresholds, and to enlarge the scale of infection trials.

Aquatic invasive plants present a growing risk to the environment and the economy. One of the most problematic invasive plants found in North American waterbodies is Eurasian watermilfoil, Myriophyllum spicatum. Eurasian watermilfoil was inadvertently introduced into Christina Lake, British Columbia, Canada, in the early 1980's. Physical control methods have been utilized since the plant was first identified in the Lake, but regular intensive management is required to meet control objectives. Variable success has been reported in Ontario lakes and waterbodies in the United States using the milfoil weevil, Euhrychiopsis lecontei as a biological control agent. Field sampling in Christina Lake indicated that the milfoil weevil is not currently present, or is present at numbers below detection. As an introductory stage of a potential biological control program, a Christina Lake-specific simulation model was developed to evaluate the expected response of milfoil growth to different weevil augmentation scenarios. Results of the model indicate that control of the sites most impacted by Eurasian watermilfoil could be achieved with a weevil augmentation rate of one weevil per square metre.
