There is general recognition that nuclear cardiology, and particularly myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS), is under-utilized in the UK when compared with practice in mainland Europe and the USA. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) is about to issue a report that will recognize the shortfall in provision, and this should lead

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a silent killer that may go undetected for years. It is the leading cause of death at the same time cancer by itself is associated with coagulation disorders due to hypercoagulable state and can cause coronary thromboemboli. However, there is no definite evidence that cancer by itself predisposes to coronary atherosclerosis. Optimal management of cancer patients with such known risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD) includes assessing risk of future cardiac events, particularly myocardial infarction (MI) and death. There is no single test that can diagnose or stratifies risk of having CAD. Myocardial perfusion imaging is the only non-invasive method of assessing myocardial perfusion. This project was undertaken at the Nuclear Medicine department Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research center, Pakistan, to see the utility of MP imaging in preoperative risk assessment in cancer patients who are undergoing major surgery.

Cardiac SPECT Imaging, Second Edition offers the best of all possible worlds--a critical topic, internationally recognized authors and cutting-edge coverage. It guides you through all aspects of the modality--from basic principles (acquiring and processing images, quality control)...and clinical applications (evaluating myocardial infarction and coronary artery disease)...to the very latest equipment. It even compares SPECT with other modalities (PET, CT, MRI, and echocardiography) to ensure smart, cost-effective decisions by both the cardiologist and nuclear medicine physician.Look for new chapters on attenuation correction, gated perfusion SPECT, radiopharmaceuticals, and myocardial perfusion SPECT, as well as the very latest on myocardial perfusion SPECT in conjunction with exercise and pharmacologic stress, assessment of perfusion/viability with Tc-99m agents, how SPECT compares with other advanced cardiac imaging modalities, and more!

Nuclear cardiology is one of the most widely used non-invasive techniques for the assessment of coronary artery disease and other cardiovascular conditions. It has proved to be a cost effective tool for the evaluation and management of cardiac patients and usually has a decisive role for diagnosis, prognosis and risk stratification. In particular, radionuclide myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) is used extensively worldwide for the evaluation of known or suspected coronary artery disease, with an estimated 15-20 million procedures performed annually. This publication provides a detailed analysis of all the steps involved in the delivery of nuclear cardiology services, from referrals to reporting, and is intended to serve as guidance for the implementation, homogenization and enhancement of MPI practice in those Member States where the technique is under development.

Recent research has identified the assessment of myocardial perfusion and viability as another promising CT application for the comprehensive diagnosis of coronary heart disease. In this book, the first to be devoted to this novel application of CT, leading experts from across the world present up-to-date information and consider future directions. After short sections outlining the state of the art in the traditional applications of CT to image structure and function, the full range of CT techniques that may be employed to evaluate the myocardial blood supply are discussed in detail. Similarly, diverse CT approaches for the assessment of myocardial viability are described, with careful consideration of the available experimental and clinical evidence and the role of quantitative imaging. Protocol recommendations that will be of invaluable practical assistance are also provided.

Myocardial Perfusion Imaging Beyond The Left Ventricle written by M. Elizabeth Oates and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-12 with Medical categories.

This book will serve as a comprehensive reference source and self-assessment guide for physicians and technologists who practice myocardial perfusion SPECT imaging. Readers will learn to identify a wide variety of findings apart from the left ventricle, including those in the chest, the abdomen, and the right heart. It is explained which findings are clinically relevant and related to the reason for the myocardial perfusion imaging examination and which are incidental, with or without important clinical ramifications. The coverage includes a wide variety of common and uncommon focal lesions (e.g., benign or malignant neoplasms) and organ/systemic diseases (e.g., emphysema, cirrhosis and its sequelae, cholecystitis, duodenogastric reflux/gastroparesis, end-stage renal disease) that may be detected with myocardial perfusion SPECT imaging. In addition, guidance is provided in the recognition of typical artifacts, which may appear either “hot” or “cold” on the raw (unprocessed) and processed SPECT images, and, thereby, in the avoidance of potential interpretative pitfalls.

Nuclear Cardiology written by Andrew Kelion and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Medical categories.

Readable, practical and concise, Nuclear Cardiology is a self-contained guide to this cardiac imaging subspecialty. Including both technical and clinical aspects, it provides a foundation of essential knowledge common to practitioners from any background. This title covers radiation physics, biology and protection, and addresses all areas of imaging including the design and operation of the gamma camera (including solid-state cameras), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) acquisition and processing, and image interpretation and writing of reports. Stress testing and radiopharmaceuticals are explained in detail, as is the evidence-base underpinning myocardial perfusion scintigraphy. Newer radionuclide imaging techniques are well-covered (e.g. phosphate scintigraphy in cardiac amyloidosis), as is the expanding field of cardiac positron emission tomography (PET). Fully updated with coverage of new indications for gamma camera imaging, increased focus on attenuation correction and SPECT-CT and detail on the design use and clinical implications of solid-state gamma cameras throughout, this second edition of the essential text for nuclear cardiology trainees and practitioners is fully illustrated with colour plates to aid clinical practice. Presented in the bestselling Oxford Specialist Handbook format, Nuclear Cardiology provides core knowledge for those training in the subspecialty, whether at a basic or advanced level or from a medical or technical background, and is a key resource for those seeking to accredit in the subspecialty.
