Medicine in the late 20th century faces a perplexing paradox. On the one hand the system of medicine that has been developed over the past two of three hundred years has reached a stage of unprecedented technological success, but on the other hand, the health care policies of those developed countries from which it has been derived are faltering and under such severe strain as to be facing serious challenges almost everywhere. This study develops a critique of western medicine aimed at addressing this issue, based on the proposition that any system of medicine must necessarily embody a mysterious quality, involving an all-encompassing element of indeterminancy and so of uncertainty. The role of mystery must be wholeheartedly acknowledged if the current mistakes and problems of western medicine are to be resolved and understood, so that more plausible moral and scientific foundations can be established.

In this book, Dr. Stephen A. Appelbaum sets out on an odyssey to explore healing and its mysteries. The focus of his journey is to expand and explore the boundaries of everyday Western medicine and its often unquestioned assumptions about healing and its implications for living today. He studies -- and experiences firsthand -- such "healing" rituals and techniques as LSD, voodoo, bare hand surgery, and many varieties of folk medicine and religious healings. In a penetrating final chapter, Appelbaum delineates the importance of belief and faith, and how each affects the outcome of any healing intervention. This fascinating study of healing around the world is at once entertaining and informative, curious and courageous.

Why can salamanders grow new legs, and young children grow new finger tips, but adult humans can't regenerate? What is the electricity that flows through the human body? Is it the same thing that the Chinese call Qi? If so, what does Chinese medicine know, that western medicine ignores? Dan Keown's highly accessible, witty, and original book shows how western medicine validates the theories of Chinese medicine, and how Chinese medicine explains the mysteries of the body that western medicine largely ignores. He explains the generative force of embryology, how the hearts of two people in love (or in scientific terms `quantum entanglement') truly beat as one, how a cheating heart is also an ill heart (which is why men are twice as likely to die of a sudden heart attack with their mistress than with their wife), how neural crest cells determine our lifespan, and why Proust's madeleines evoked the memories they did. The book shows how the theories of western and Chinese medicine support each other, and how the integrated theory enlarges our understanding of how bodies work on every level. Full of good stories and surprising details, Dan Keown's book is essential reading for anyone who has ever wanted to know how the body really works.

“Comprehensive, encyclopedic, and lucid, this book is a must for all practitioners of the healing arts who want to broaden their understanding. Readers interested in the role of herbs and foods in healing will also find much to learn here, as I have. . . . A fine work.”—Annemarie Colbin, author of Food and Healing The promise and mystery of Chinese medicine has intrigued and fascinated Westerners ever since the “Bamboo Curtain” was lifted in the early 1970s. Now, in Between Heaven and Earth, two of the foremost American educators and healers in the Chinese medical profession demystify this centuries-old approach to health. Harriet Beinfeld and Efrem Korngold, pioneers in the practice of acupuncture and herbal medicine in the United States for over eighteen years, explain the philosophy behind Chinese medicine, how it works and what it can do. Combining Eastern traditions with Western sensibilities in a unique blend that is relevant today, Between Heaven and Earth addresses three vital areas of Chinese medicine—theory, therapy, and types—to present a comprehensive, yet understandable guide to this ancient system. Whether you are a patient with an aggravating complaint or a curious intellectual seeker, Between Heaven and Earth opens the door to a vast storehouse of knowledge that bridges the gap between mind and body, theory and practice, professional and self-care, East and West. “Groundbreaking . . . Here at last is a complete and readable guide to Chinese medicine.”—San Francisco Chronicle

As the world's most comprehensive and deeply researched system of alternative and complementary medicine, Chinese medicine enjoys a large following in scientifically developed communities. Yet its concepts and principles have been shrouded in mystery and obscure language. This path-breaking book strips this ancient science of its mystique and metaphysical pretentions and interprets it to strike common ground with biomedical science. Concepts like qi and meridians are interpreted not as physical entities, but as constructs to facilitate diagnosis and therapy using heuristic models. Written for medical professionals, philosophers of medicine and discerning readers interested in holistic therapies, the book offers a unique perspective of Chinese medicine in an advanced biomedical world. It has practical chapters on cardiovascular disease, irritable bowel syndrome and cancer, and a compilation of Chinese herbs. This second edition of the acclaimed Theory of Chinese Medicine has new material on chronic diseases and the intriguing possible convergence of biomedicine and TCM. Contents:The Origins and Nature of Chinese MedicineChinese and Western Medicine: Never the Twain Shall Meet? The Causes of DiseaseThe Fundamental Ingredients of LifeOrgan and Meridian SystemsMethods of Diagnosis and TherapyTreating Illness: Herbs and Other TherapiesScientific Evidence for TCMCultural Factors in Placebo EffectsTreatment of Chronic IllnessesChinese Medicine: Reinterpretation and Future Direction Readership: Medical professionals, both Western medical doctors and TCM practitioners; librarians of TCM professional associations and teaching institutes; scholars interested in the theoretical basis for Chinese medicine, and the informed general reader seeking to understand the rationale and applicability of Chinese medical therapies to enhance their health. Keywords:Chinese Medicine;Epistemology;EvidenceReviews: "Despite its efficacy in treating ailments (for some of which Western medicine offers no cure), traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) continues to be regarded with skepticism in the West. To a large extent, this is due to the fact that TCM practitioners have been unable to explain TCM theories using Western scientific categories. A TCM physician who was also trained in the philosophy of science at Cambridge and the London School of Economics, Hong Hai offers a fresh and at times iconoclastic interpretation of Chinese medicine. This is without doubt the most important contribution to the field in the modern era. At last, Chinese medicine makes sense. Surprisingly accessible, this work is a must read for doctors East and West." Michael Tai, PhD (Cambridge) Research Associate Cambridge University "This is a book which should not be missed by anyone with an interest in Chinese medicine." Emeritus Professor Donald Gillies Dept of Science and Technology Studies University College, London "A fascinating book with special implications for medical professionals evaluating TCM as a genuine science and therapeutic armamentaria." The American Journal of Chinese Medicine "I enjoyed reading the book and applaud the seriousness with which the author tackles the difficult problem of evaluating TCM and his recognition of the amount of work that still has to be done." Professor Sir Geoffrey Lloyd Needham Research Institute Cambridge University "A scientific, historical, philosophical and at times unconventional interpretation of TCM. It is a refreshing read and highly recommended to anyone who wishes to explore and understand TCM better in order to improve and maintain one's health." Dr Koh Hwee Ling Associate Professor Department of Pharmacy National University of Singapore "The core of this book deals with the epistemological issues concerning the scientific status of medical conjectures in Traditional Chinese Medicine, very intelligently written and bringing to bear a great deal of common sense and good philosophy. There is much that is highly original in it." Peter J Clark Professor Philosophy University of St Andrews "Lucid, brilliant explanation of the terminology and principles of TCM and its approach to the management of syndromes. This is a book that anyone with even the slightest interest in complementary medicine should read." Dr Teoh Eng Soon MBBS, MD, FRCOG, FACS Gynecologist and former lecturer NUS Medical School "Approaching the theories of traditional Chinese medicine from the perspectives of the contemporary philosophy of science, this book is an important contribution to both of these two fields. It has expanded the intellectual horizons to better understand traditional Chinese medicine." Jing-Bao Nie, BMed, MMed, MA, PhD Bioethics Centre University of Otago

Judith Ford was a successful psychotherapist with a relatively new second marriage, a full-time clinical practice, and three children. She was also a runner, a yoga-practitioner, a dancer, and a writer when she came down with a mysterious illness that landed her in the hospital for a full summer and nearly ended her life. She recovered through a combination of Western medicine and shamanic journeys. A few years later she helped her parents through their final illnesses. This book is both her story and theirs, about how each of them maintained hope or sometimes despaired. It’s about how they each suffered and rallied, laughed, loved, forgave, and let go. And it’s about how all of us live in the shadows of the unknown and the unanswerable.
