"Relax. Listen to your sound of your breathing and the sound of my voice. Close your eyes and open your heart. Banish all thoughts from your head and take steady breath. Now allow yourself to fall into a warm, soothing trance." Nicol Fulmar was a gentle, enchantress in her forties would occasionally use her calming voice and hypnotism to relieve fears and anxieties by entrancing her family of friends in the lakeside community. Her home felt alive with love on a magical slope on Lake Memphremagog until it died with her mysterious murder. Inspector Duforêt and lieutenant Leblanc, two middle aged detectives from the Sûreté de police in Magog, follow clues from the Quebec Eastern Townships to New Zealand, under the inquisitive eyes of Nicol's loving crow, Mowat, in order solve the hateful crime.

About 1875 the Crows abandoned their own Sun Dance, but they continued to carry out other traditional rites despite opposition from missionaries and the federal government. In 1941, Crow Indians from Montana sought out leaders of the Sun Dance among the Wind River Shoshonis in Wyoming and under the direction of John Truhujo, made the ceremony a part of their lives. In The Shoshoni-Crow Sun Dance, Fred W. Voget draws on forty years of fieldwork to describe the people and circumstances leading to this singular event, the nature of the ceremony, the reconciliation’s with Christianity and peyotism, the role of the Sun Dance as a catalyst for the reassertion of Crow cultural identity, and the place the Sun Dance now holds in Crow life and culture. Voget’s description includes photographs and diagrams of the Sun Dance.

At every sunrise he runs around the land, announcing that he is the best and that no one can match his speed or strength. Many of the fowls in Lavandale grow tired of Ricky’s behavior. They complain to the Guardian Council, which decides to assign Ricky to guard the egg factory in the hopes of making him more responsible. However after two days, Ricky grows bored and returns to his old ways. While he’s away from the egg factory making his morning proclamations for everyone to hear, two rattlesnakes take two eggs. As a result of Ricky’s lapse in judgment, the Guardian Council banishes him to the Forbidden Forest for seven days. While in the forest, Ricky fears for his life, encounters some scary animals, and meets Cappi, a vegetarian alligator, who becomes his friend and shows him how to stay safe. While Ricky and Cappi are exploring, they see some hawks flying. Syndicated cartoonist and illustrator Tim Jackson offers an unprecedented look at the rich yet largely untold story of African American cartoon artists. This book provides a historical record of the men and women who created seventy-plus comic strips, many editorial cartoons, and illustrations for articles. The volume covers the mid-1880s, the early years of the self-proclaimed black press, to 1968, when African American cartoon artists were accepted in the so-called mainstream. When the cartoon world was preparing to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the American comic strip, Jackson anticipated that books and articles published upon the anniversary would either exclude African American artists or feature only the three whose work appeared in mainstream newspapers after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in 1968. Jackson was determined to make it impossible for critics and scholars to plead an ignorance of black cartoonists or to claim that there is no information on them. He began in 1997 cataloging biographies of African American cartoonists, illustrators, and graphic designers, and showing samples of their work. His research involved searching historic newspapers and magazines as well as books and “Who’s Who” directories. This project strives not only to record the contributions of African American artists, but also to place them in full historical context. Revealed chronologically, these cartoons offer an invaluable perspective on American history of the black community during pivotal moments, including the Great Migration, race riots, the Great Depression, and both World Wars. Many of the greatest creators have already died, so Jackson recognizes the stakes in remembering them before this hidden yet vivid history is irretrievably lost.

To date, Ive written three books pertaining to the experience of walking the Camino de Santiago, a 1000-year-old European Pilgrimage with many points of departure, but which all lead to the northwestern Spanish province of Galicia... to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela under which the bones of St. James the Apostle are believed to be buried. Its the Journey, not the destination, could not be more true. Combining journal entries, poetry and formal e-mails, these books celebrate the sights, sounds, flavors, (and the physical and mental strain), of crossing mountains, rolling landscapes, and unchanged rural villages, as well as vibrant cities of Art, Architechture and Style. Combining journal entries, poetry and formal e-mails, these books relay the experience in a first-hand way of what its like to labor and glide a couple thousand miles across Europe. Scales of the Dragon collects the poems from Sons of Thunder, Autumn on the Trail to Santiago and Upon This Stoney Holy Year. And although nothing new is literally added, what emerges is a shift in Perception. To walk the trail by way of poetic imagery is an entirely different modality - it is to walk through someone elses In-scape but awaken in ones own skin - and its not for everyone... but for those with whom it resonates, here is the full spray of poems.
