Im Mittelpunkt der Studie steht die Frage, wie Christa Wolf mit der stofflichen Vielfalt des Medea-Mythos sowie mit dem Potential des Mythos umgeht und auf welche poetologischen Möglichkeiten sie dabei zurückgreift. Auf der Grundlage theoretischer Funktionsbestimmungen des Mythos wird gezeigt, wie Medea. Stimmen an verschiedenste Lesarten des Mythos anknüpft. Das Spektrum der behandelten Themen reicht dabei von der entmythisierenden Rückführung des Mythos auf Gründungsopfer und Sündenbockmechanismen bis zur Diskussion der These, Wolf schaffe einen neuen, feministischen Mythos der «wilden Frau». Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt bildet die Analyse des erzähltechnischen Verfahrens der «Stimmen» vor dem Hintergrund des von Wolf theoretisch angestrebten Konzeptes eines offenen Kunstwerks.

M. Klinger, Grillparzer, Jahn und Anouilh beweisen. Auch Christa Wolf nimmt in ihrem Roman "Medea. Stimmen" Elemente des antiken Mythos, Medea' auf und variiert und verändert ihn. In der vorliegenden Arbeit soll diese Bearbeitung des Medea-Mythos bei Christa Wolf sowohl in ihren Veränderungen als auch in ihren Parallelen analysiert werden. Dazu wird es zunächst im ersten Kapitel notwendig sein, einen kurzen Überblick über die wichtigsten Handlungselemente des Medea Mythos zu geben. Grundlage des ersten Kapitels und damit der gesamten Analyse wird der Medea-Mythos nach Euripides sein, da dieser den ursprünglichen Mythos als erster zusammenfassend erzählt hat. Auf dieser Vorlage soll anschließend analysiert werden, welche Veränderungen Christa Wolf für ihre Version der, Medea' vornimmt und inwiefern Parallelen zum ursprünglichen Medea-Mythos zu ziehen sind. Dies wird anhand von ausgewählten Handlungen und Beziehungen dargestellt, um schließlich auch Medeas Schuldfrage klären zu können. Anschließend soll in einem weiteren Kapitel die aktuellen Thematik in Christa Wolfs Werk thematisiert und diskutiert werden. Interessant wird dabei sein, zu sehen, welche möglichen zeitgenössischen Probleme Christa Wolf mit dieser weit zurückliegenden Figur aufzeigen will. Abschließend erfolgt eine kurze Zusammenfassung der Analyse und Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit sowie ein Ausblick auf mögliche andere Analysepunkte in Christ Wolfs "Medea. Stimmen".

Stimmen“. Die Forschungsfrage knüpft an das Motiv der Frauenfiguren an und untersucht in welche Gesellschaftsordnung Medea, Agameda und Glauke in Christa Wolfs „Medea.Stimmen“ einzuordnen sind. Die Figurenkonstellation Medea, Agameda und Glauke bietet sich an, um bedeutsame Aspekte zu beleuchten und zu vergleichen. Zuerst wird im zweiten Kapitel eine Charakterisierung der Frauenfiguren Medea, Agameda und Glauke vorgenommen. Auf der Grundlage der Charakterisierungen wird im dritten Kapitel eine Analyse der Frauenfiguren unter der dem Gesichtspunkt des Matriarchats aufgestellt. Es wird untersucht, inwieweit die Figuren aufgrund ihrer Persönlichkeit der Gesellschaftsordnung des Matriarchats oder Patriarchats zuzuordnen sind. Um die Begriffe „Matriarchat“ und „Patriarchat“ zu beleuchten, wird demnach im dritten Kapitel eine Begriffserklärung vorgenommen. In dieser Arbeit wird vorwiegend mit der Primärliteratur „Medea. This bilingual work identifies and explains the subversive rewriting of ancient, medieval and modern myths in contemporary novels. The book opens with two theoretical essays on the subject of subversive tendencies and myth reinvention in the contemporary novel. From there, it moves on to the analysis of essential texts. Firstly, classical myths in works by authors such as André Gide, Thomas Pynchon, Julio Cortázar, Italo Calvino or Christa Wolf (for instance, Theseus, Oedipus or Medea) are discussed. Then, myths of biblical origin – such as the Flood or the Golem – are revisited in the work of Giorgio Bassani, Julian Barnes and Cynthia Ozick. A further section is concerned with the place of modern myths (Faust, the ghost, Ophelia…) in the fiction of Günter Grass, Paul Auster, or Clara Janés. The mythological patrimony is an excellent example of the unconscious creative ability that brings reason both to the existence of myth as well as to its symbolic function. Reconsidering the connection between literature and psychoanalysis, this study starts from the Jungian archetypal theory up to the Freudian unconscious and its ability to produce symbols, and provides the tools for a reading of the phenomenon of the literary reworking, in the modern age, of meaningful themes and mythological figures. Therefore, revising and rewriting the myth means thinking again about one’s cultural memory, attempting to re-propose in a new dimension the ever present questions that have not found an answer and which the figures of the myth symbolise across the time. The attention focuses on figures like the elementary spirits of Romantic imagery, in particular on that of the Wasserfrau, up to the analysis of a twentieth-century reinterpretation of the myth of Undine. Moreover the Medea myth is reconsidered starting from the contradiction implicit in this figure – and in that of every Mother Goddess – in order to then explore the most problematic and conflicting aspect of this image of womanhood, the infanticide, which over time becomes the symbol of the denial of the maternal principle.

Myth in the Modern Novel: Imagining the Absolute posits a twofold thesis. First, although Modernity is regarded as an era dominated by science and rational thought, it has in fact not relinquished the hold of myth, a more "primitive" form of thought which is difficult to reconcile with modern rationality. Second, some of the most important statements as to the reconcilability of myth and Modernity are found in the work of certain prominent novelists. This book offers a close examination of the work of eleven writers from the late eighteenth century to the beginning of the twenty-first, representing German, French, American, Czech and Swedish literature. The analyses of individual novels reveal a variety of intriguing views of myth in Modernity, and offer an insight into the "modernizing" transformations myth has undergone when applied in the modern novel. The study shows the presence of the "subconscious", the mythic layer, in modern western culture and how this has been dealt with in novelistic literature.
