Mythic Portals: Uncovering Legends of Hidden Gateways Between Worlds explores humanity's long-held fascination with portals—gateways between our world and other realms. From ancient myths to modern fantasy, the concept of these interdimensional gateways reveals fundamental aspects of human psychology and spirituality. Consider the Gates of Ishtar in Babylonian mythology, seen as a literal and symbolic entrance to the city, or the various pathways to the underworld in Greek stories, each reflecting cultural anxieties and hopes. The book examines the historical evolution of portal narratives, tracing their development across cultures and religions. Beginning with foundational myths, the study progresses through historical periods and diverse faith traditions, analyzing the role of portals in rituals, spiritual ascensions, and literature. The approach blends comparative mythology, religious studies, and literary criticism to offer a nuanced understanding. Mythic Portals culminates in a discussion of the enduring power of these myths, suggesting they reflect our need to transcend limitations and explore the boundaries of consciousness. By examining ancient texts, archaeological findings, and modern fantasy, the book provides a comprehensive view of how portal beliefs have shaped cultural and spiritual values.

To truly know Rhiannon, we must excavate the layers of her myth, decode the meaning of her symbols, and seek to restore the significance of her very name. Although she has a mythology around her, and has many modern-day devotees, nowhere in ancient lore has she been identified as a Goddess. We have no known cult centers or devotional altars dedicated to Rhiannon. How then do we approach this revered Lady? How can we best know her as Goddess? We need but call to her, and ask for what we need. Be it her bag of plenty, the soul-healing song of her birds, or the empowerment of the sovereignty she holds, when you call to Rhiannon, the Divine Queen of the Britons, know that she will stop… and know that she will answer your call.

In Memory Traces, art historians and archaeologists come together to examine the nature of sacred space in Mesoamerica. Through five well-known and important centers of political power and artistic invention in Mesoamerica—Tetitla at Teotihuacan, Tula Grande, the Mound of the Building Columns at El Tajín, the House of the Phalli at Chichén Itzá, and Tonina—contributors explore the process of recognizing and defining sacred space, how sacred spaces were viewed and used both physically and symbolically, and what theoretical approaches are most useful for art historians and archaeologists seeking to understand these places. Memory Traces acknowledges that the creation, use, abandonment, and reuse of sacred space have a strongly recursive relation to collective memory and meanings linked to the places in question and reconciles issues of continuity and discontinuity of memory in ancient Mesoamerican sacred spaces. It will be of interest to students and scholars of Mesoamerican studies and material culture, art historians, architectural historians, and cultural anthropologists. Contributors: Laura M. Amrhein, Nicholas P. Dunning, Rex Koontz, Cynthia Kristan-Graham, Matthew G. Looper, Travis Nygard, Keith M. Prufer, Matthew H. Robb, Patricia J. Sarro, Kaylee Spencer, Eric Weaver, Linnea Wren

This book offers an eclectic range of transdisciplinary insights into the role of metaphor, myth and fable in shaping our understanding of the world and how we interact with it and with each other. Drawing on innovative perspectives from widely different fields, this book explores how metaphor might facilitate and underpin transformative change towards environmental, ecological and societal sustainability. It illustrates the ways in which contemporary metaphors lock us into patterns of thinking, modes of behaviour, and styles of living that reproduce and accentuate our current socio-environmental problems. It sets itself the task of finding new metaphors and myths that might help move us towards sustainability as societal flourishing. By examining the use of metaphor in diverse fields such as energy use, the food system, health care, arts and the humanities, it invites the reader to reflect on the deep-seated influence of language in general, and metaphor in particular, in shaping how we understand and act upon the world. Re-imagining the use of language in framing both the problems we face and the solutions we devise, this novel contribution is a vital source of ideas for those aiming to change how we think and act in pursuit of more sustainable futures. Upholds “a Disney vacation as a religious experience . . . [offers] insightful arguments relating to the nature of play as well as Nietzschean philosophy” (Reading Religion). Rituals mark significant moments in our lives—perhaps none more significant than moments of lightheartedness, joy, and play. Rituals of play are among the most sacred of any of the rites in which humanity may engage. Although we may fail to recognize them, they are always present in culture, providing a kind of psychological release for their participants, child and adult alike. Disneyland is an example of the kind of container necessary for the construction of rituals of play. This work explores the original Disney theme park in Anaheim as a temple cult. It challenges the disciplines of mythological studies, religious studies, film studies, and depth psychology to broaden traditional definitions of the kind of cultural apparatus that constitute temple culture and ritual. It does so by suggesting that Hollywood’s entertainment industry has developed a platform for mythic ritual. After setting the ritualized “stage,” this book turns to the practices in Disneyland proper, analyzing the patron’s traditions within the framework of the park and beyond. It explores Disneyland’s spectacles, through selected shows and parades, and concludes with an exploration of the park’s participation in ritual renewal. “There is much to commend in Koehler’s study . . . Surely, her work should encourage others to examine myth construction and sacred-secular rituals in popular culture.”—H-Celebration

"Quantum Mythology: How Physics Shapes Our Myths and Legends" explores the intriguing connections between quantum mechanics and ancient myths, suggesting that many legends may have been early interpretations of phenomena now understood through quantum principles, bridging the gap between science and mythology. The driving idea behind the book "Quantum Mythology: How Physics Shapes Our Myths And Legends" is to explore the intricate interplay between mythology and quantum theory. The book aims to demonstrate how ancient wisdom and modern quantum concepts are interconnected, presenting a narrative that intertwines human imagination with the realities of quantum mechanics. By examining phenomena such as wave-particle duality, entanglement, and superposition through the lens of mythology and mysticism, the book seeks to offer a profound understanding of how physics shapes our myths and legends and to reframe our perception of nature and reality. Key Takeaways The concept of quantum mythology integrates ancient myths with quantum mechanics to reveal fundamental truths about existence. Quantum mechanics phenomena such as superposition, entanglement, and wave-particle duality mirror themes found in global mythologies. Ancient myths often depicted cosmic creation, interconnectedness, and non-locality, which resonate with modern quantum theories. The interdisciplinary approach fosters a holistic understanding of reality, blending empirical science with symbolic mythological interpretations. The integration of quantum principles with mythology prompts a reevaluation of time, space, consciousness, and reality itself. This synthesis has practical implications for technology, such as quantum computing and communication, as well as cultural and ethical considerations. Preserving and revitalizing ancient myths through the lens of quantum mechanics can promote cultural appreciation and global unity.

As we withdraw farther from American canonical literature and poetry and move closer to a re-appraisal of literature’s impact upon the arts through media, we may easily find a match for greater humanism and popular interaction in American rock culture through Paul Bowles. In this work, Bowles is re-invented within the postmodern, the postcolonial, and the renegade future underscored by liberal elites that had breathed new life into the American counterculture. Re-Creating Paul Bowles attests to the moments of relentless humanism and imaginative transformation that are most dreamlike, engaging the antagonism of psychology with imperialism at last. In his youth a classical composer and critic, Bowles deserves credit for spawning new generations of rock and pop music through his use of sound and tapping of non-Western or non-European folk music, bringing classic ethnography to the rock generation with Music of Morocco. Re-Creating Paul Bowles examines the Latin American, American, African, and Arab moments of his scholastic effort, a primary beginning for understanding modern popular music’s free transcription of tradition. Re-Creating Paul Bowles includes several examples of films that adapt the author’s personal life and times, the production of surrealist technique in film and literature, and the re-invention of classic works such as The Sheltering Sky and Collected Stories. It assumes the technique for re-production allows the elder Bowles greater freedom in crossing cultural boundaries and overruling the colonialist separateness that guarded cultural content for centuries. Bowles has always deserved re-appraisal in the American academy—and liberation from his stereotypical cult figure identity, a positive force in the ethnic comprehension of Self and society.
