These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Mythical Monsters: Look inside the book: Ferdinand Mendez Pinto quaintly observes, in one of his earlier chapters, “I will not speak of the Palace Royal, because I saw it but on the outside, howbeit the Chinese tell such wonders of it as would amaze a man; for it is my intent to relate nothing save what we beheld here with our own eyes, and that was so much as that I am afraid to write it; not that it would seem strange to those who have seen and read the marvels of the kingdom of China, but because I doubt that they which would compare those wondrous things that are in the countries they have not seen, with that little they have seen in their own, will make some questionPg 6 of it, or, it may be, give no credit at all to these truths, because they are not conformable to their understanding and small experience.” ...The illiterate backwoodsman or trapper (and hence by inference the savage or semi-civilized man), whose mind isPg 21 occupied merely by his surroundings, and whose range of thought, in place of being diffused over an illimitable horizon, is confined within very moderate limits, develops remarkable powers of observation and an accuracy of memory in regard to localities, and the details of his daily life, surprising to the scholar who has mentally to travel over so much more ground, and, receiving daily so many and so far more complex ideas, can naturally grasp each less firmly, and is apt to lose them entirely in the haze of a period of time which would still leave those of the uneducated man distinguishable or even prominent landmarks.

Mythical Monsters In Classical Literature written by Paul Murgatroyd and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-12 with Literary Criticism categories.

This engaging, readable yet impeccably scholarly investigation of monsters in Classical literature will entertain and stimulate as well as inform. It covers all the major mythical monsters mentioned by Greek and Roman authors (Medusa, Hydra, Polyphemus, the Minotaur, Sphinx, Harpies, Sirens, Cerberus, Chimaera, Centaurs, and many more) along with Classical precursors of vampires, werewolves and the living dead. Versions of these creatures that appear in later literature and film are also discussed. Mythical Monsters is original in considering monsters squarely from a literary standpoint, introducing elements of literary analysis gradually as the work progresses, and building up to quite a sophisticated approach. This will increase readers' critical appreciation and plain enjoyment of these stories, which continue to fascinate today. To facilitate browsing, each chapter can be read independently. There is a useful bibliography, and the book is enlivened by illustrations from ancient and more recent art.

This work examines the parallels between ancient Ugaritic literature and the Old Testament. It demonstrates that human civilizations have certain generic cognitive similarities regarding the structuring of their societies--offering an alternative to the trendy composite or plagiaristic theory pertaining to Near Eastern literature and that of the Old Testament. Further, it may be deduced from these demonstrations that the Hebrew text has the ability, considering the vast number of resources within its own historiography, to be the primary source for determining clarification and accuracy. The second part of this study further critiques ideas regarding ancient literature and theology. It underscores the procedures, methods, and theories used to understand humanity's past from two philosophical perspectives--historical and theological. Moreover, it offers insights necessary for proper interpretation.

Job written by Bruce Arnold and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-28 with Religion categories.

Most people think of the book of Job as an attempt to explain suffering, but they fail to see the more important issue of God’s righteousness and graciousness in bringing good out of evil. The understanding offered in this book helps the reader focus accordingly on God’s purpose in grace to bring Job to know Jehovah himself and his heavenly will that he might thereby be transformed and truly become a servant of God. In this respect, the book presents a paradigm of God’s crucial work with all believers to make himself known to them through revelation and repentance, that they might genuinely know him as their Redeemer and be one with his exalted will. As is expressed throughout the Bible, God warmly desires that all his people serve him. The repentance that comes at the climax of the book is not the believer’s repentance upon initial faith but the more crucial repentance of the mature believer for the kingdom of God. God’s purpose with our lives depends, therefore, on our understanding his will and knowing our God and his righteousness. Job is an “ordinary servant of God,” therefore, as a pattern to all believers.

This package contains all four books of An Introduction to the Old Testament set: An Introduction to the Old Testament Historical Books, An Introduction to the Old Testament Poetic Books, An Introduction to the Old Testament Prophetic Books, and An Introduction to the Old Testament Pentateuch. In An Introduction to the Old Testament Historical Books, incredible events, amazing love stories, larger-than-life personalities and deep theological implications and themes are just part of the treasure that awaits readers. These books tell the story of the nation of Israel and the God who loves her, punishes her, and always brings this recalcitrant people back to Himself. In An Introduction to the Old Testament Poetic Books, C. Hassell Bullock, a noted Old Testament scholar, delves deep into the hearts of the five poetic books, offering readers helpful details such as hermeneutical considerations for each book, theological content and themes, detailed analysis of each book, and cultural perspectives. In An Introduction to the Old Testament Prophetic Books, C. Hassell Bullock presents a clear picture of some of history's most profound spokesmen--the Old Testament prophets--and the God who shaped them. Our generational distance from the age of the prophets might seem to be a measureless chasm. Yet we dare not make the mistake of assuming that passing years have rendered irrelevant not only the Old Testament prophets, but also the God who comprehends, spans, and transcends all time. In An Introduction to the Old Testament Pentateuch, Old Testament expert Herbert Wolf provides layreaders and scholars alike with a strong undergirding of understanding and knowledge in this introduction that reveals both the seriousness and excitement of the Pentateuch.
