The Story of Atlantis is an anthropological study by English theosophist William Scott-Elliot about legendary ancient island Atlantis. Scott-Elliot came into contact with theosophist Charles Webster Leadbeater who claimed that he received some knowledge about ancient Atlantis. Scott-Elliot undertook scholarly research to back his theory. He offers a different perspective on the history of civilization, speculating that the world has regenerated at least five times. New races emerged on Atlantis from the surviving ape-like creatures from Lemuria. This led to the Atlantean races, beginning with the black skinned "Rmoahal" and leading to the "copper coloured" Tlavatli, who were ancestor-worshippers, and then the "Toltecs", who had advanced technology including "airships". The Toltecs were succeeded by "First Turanians" and then "Original Semites". These later produced further sub-races, the Akkadians and Mongolians. A group of Akkadians migrated to Britain 100,000 years ago, where they built Stonehenge. Scott-Elliot also claimed that Atlantis split into two linked islands, one called Daitya, and the other Ruta. Eventually only a remnant of Ruta remained, called Poseidonis, before that too disappeared.

Jahrhundert, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: "Als aber in späterer Zeit gewaltige Erdbeben und Überschwemmungen eintraten, versank während eines einzigen schrecklichen Tages und einer Nacht (...) die Insel Atlantis." Mit diesen Worten schilderte der antike Philosoph Platon in seinem Dialog "Timaios" den Untergang der mächtigen Insel Atlantis vor vielen tausenden Jahren und machte sie zu einem der größten Mythen der Kulturgeschichte Europas. Und noch heute beschäftigt dieser Mythos zahlreiche Menschen auf der ganzen Welt. Platons Erzählung des plötzlichen Untergangs einer hoch entwickelten Zivilisation, welche von einem König in beispielhafter Mustergültigkeit regiert wurde und die etliche andere Länder unter ihre Herrschaft bringen konnte, findet sich eingefügt in seinen Dialogen "Timaios" und "Kritias". Wird sie im erstgenannten nur kurz angeschnitten, so erfährt sie im letzteren eine ausführlichere Darstellung, die jedoch unvollendet blieb. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es Platons Atlantiserzählung über die Jahrhunderte zu betrachten und ihre Wirkung auf diese nachzuzeichnen. Dabei soll vor allem der Wandel der Atlantisrezeption im Mittelpunkt stehen. Von der Wiederentdeckung der Atlantiserzählung in der Renaissance, über die Staatsutopisten des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts, wie Thomas Morus oder Francis Bacon, bis zu den Atlantissuchern des späten 19. und des 20. Jahrhunderts. Vor allem das 20. Jahrhundert brachte dabei unzählige, zum Teil krude Theorien über den Standort Atlantis hervor. "Über 40 Orte lassen sich aufzählen, wo man den verschwundenen Kontinent vermutet, darunter der Kaukasus, die Niederlande, die Bahamas, die Arktis, die Mongolei, die Krim, Karthago, Malta, Iran, Australien, Spitzbergen, Ceylon, Brasilien, Preußen, Nord- und Südamerika, Bimini, Südafrika, Marokko, Nigeria, Helgoland, Portugal, Spanien und Grönland." Um sich mit dem Thema Atlantis näher zu befassen, ist es notwendig sich mit Platons Werken "Timaios" und "Kritias" auseinanderzusetzen. Dies soll im ersten Kapitel dieser Arbeit erfolgen, so werden wir uns dem Inhalt dieser beiden Dialoge widmen. In seinen Werken "Timaios" und "Kritias" hat er das Schicksal der steinzeitlichen Supermacht bis ins letzte Detail beschrieben - und damit einen Mythos begründet. Während die meisten Archäologen und Historiker Platons Atlantis für eine reine Fiktion halten, vermuten manche Wissenschaftler sowie viele Hobbyforscher und Abenteurer aber zumindest einen wahren Kern hinter der Geschichte.
