The late W.G. Lambert (1926-2011) was one of the foremost Assyriologists of the latter part of the twentieth century. His principle legacy is a large number of superb critical editions of Babylonian literary compositions. Many of the texts he edited were on religious and mythological subjects. He will always be remembered as the editor of the Babylonian Job (Ludlul bel nemeqi, also known as the Poem of the Righteous Sufferer), the Babylonian Flood Story (Atra-hasis) and the Babylonian Creation Epic (Enuma elish). The present book is a collection of twenty-three essays Lambert published between the years 1958 and 2004. These endure not only as the legacy of one of the greatest authorities on ancient Mesopotamian religion and mythology, but also because each makes statements of considerable validity and importance. As such, many are milestones in the fields of Mesopotamian religion and mythology.

Mit diesen Worten wandte sich der neue Staatspräsident George Pompidou an die französische Nation, um den Tod des Generals Charles de Gaulle bekannt zu geben. Diese Worte sollen ausdrücken, dass Frankreich einen seiner bedeutendsten Staatsmänner des 20. Jhs. verloren hatte und damit einen Teil von sich selbst. Wie viele andere seiner Landsleute lebte de Gaulle in und mit der Geschichte. Er versuchte sich selbst als Teil der französischen Geschichte zu begreifen, verkörperte Frankreich, sah sich sogar als Personifizierung seines Landes. De Gaulle gab nicht nur den Franzosen, sondern besonders auch den Deutschen ihre Identität, die im Zweiten Weltkrieg verloren gegangen war, zurück. Sein Ziel war Frankreich einen Platz und eine bedeutende Rolle innerhalb Europas zu verschaffen. Außerdem strebte er eine deutsch-französische Aussöhnung und Zusammenarbeit an. Im Folgenden werden jedoch weniger die politischen Vorgänge während der Ära de Gaulles im Vordergrund stehen. Viel mehr soll das Wirken und die Faszination Charles de Gaulles zusammengetragen und anhand mehrerer Beispiele verdeutlicht werden, die sich in der Zeit von 1958 mit seinem 2. Amtsantritt als Staatspräsident Frankreichs bis zu seinem Tod 1970 ereignet haben. Die Darstellung seiner Wirkung ist nicht leicht, da bis heute nur zahlreiche Biographien über de Gaulle erschienen sind, die zwar in einigen Abschnitten auf die Faszination des Generals eingehen, sich ansonsten jedoch nur auf dessen Politik beziehen. Bis zum heutigen Tag ist noch kein Buch publiziert worden in dem ausschließlich über die Wirkung dieser Person berichtet wird.
