Across Europe, the parish church has stood for centuries at the centre of local communities; it was the focal point of its religious life, the rituals performed there marked the stages of life from the cradle to the grave. Nonetheless the church itself artistically and architecturally stood apart from the parish community. It was often the largest and only stone-built building in a village; it was legally distinct being subject to canon law, as well as consecrated for the celebration of religious rites. The buildings associated with the "cure of souls" were sacred sites or holy places, where humanity interacted with the divine. In spite of the importance of the parish church, these buildings have generally not received the same attention from historians as non-parochial places of worship. This collection of essays redresses this balance and reflects on the parish church across a number of confessions - Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed and Anti-Trinitarian - during the early modern period. Rather than providing a series of case studies of individual buildings, each essay looks at the evolution of parish churches in response to religious reform as well as confessional change and upheaval. They examine aspects of their design and construction; furnishings and material culture; liturgy and the use of the parish church. While these essays range widely across Europe, the volume also considers how religious provision and the parish church were translated into a global context with colonial and commercial expansion in the Americas and Asia. This interdisciplinary volume seeks to identify what was distinctive about the parish church for the congregations that gathered in them for worship and for communities across the early modern world.

Estuda-se o sistema político do governo, a provedoria-mor, a secretaria do Estado, assim como a centralidade de Salvador capital de um espaço político que procura afirmar uma justiça própria. A fiscalidade tem um papel importante na afirmação desse mecanismo de poder e no seu funcionamento. A arte da guerra e as estruturas militares são também objeto de análise. As maneiras encontradas para abastecer a capital com alimentos (a farinha de mandioca) e manter as tropas ajudam também a compreender a espacialização da economia colonial. Por fim, em um último capitulo, procura-se entender o papel de Salvador como cabeça do sistema político na crise do final do século XVII. As dificuldades na economia do açúcar são entendidas como manifestação já de uma crise estrutural, na qual a questão monetária ganha centralidade e também as tentativas de mobilização de recurso para a fortificação de Salvador. Chave do Brasil, a fraqueza dos muros e bastiões da cidade aparece como representação das dificuldades da economia do açúcar. A demanda por uma moeda provincial revela como os interesses da açucarocracia se apertavam dos interesses da Metrópole. Como se ampliavam as relações coloniais.

Since 1824, Bahians have marked independence with a popular festival that contrasts sharply with the official commemoration of Brazil's independence on 7 September. The Dois de Julho (2 July) festival celebrates the day the Portuguese troops were expelled from Salvador in 1823, the culmination of a year-long war that gave independence a radical meaning in Bahia. Bahia's Independence traces the history of the Dois de Julho festival in Salvador, the Brazilian state's capital, from 1824 to 1900. Hendrik Kraay discusses how the festival draws on elements of saints' processions, carnivals, and civic ritual in the use of such distinctive features as the indigenist symbols of independence called the caboclos and the massive procession into the city that re-enacts the patriots' victorious entry in 1823. Providing a social history of celebration, Kraay explains how Bahians of all classes, from slaves to members of the elite, placed their stamp on the festivities and claimed recognition and citizenship through participation. Analyzing debates published in newspapers – about appropriate forms of commemoration and the nature of Bahia's relationship to Brazil – as well as theatrical and poetic representations of the festival, this volume unravels how Dois de Julho celebrations became so integral to Bahia's self-representation and to its politics. The first history of this unique festival's origins, Bahia's Independence reveals how enthusiastic celebrations allowed an active and engaged citizenry to express their identity as both Bahians and Brazilians and to seek to create the nation they desired.
