Dando prosseguimento ao Colóquio “Na Gênese das Racionalidades Modernas – Em torno de Leon Battista Alberti” realizado pela UFMG em abril 2011, em Belo Horizonte, este Colóquio “Na Génese das Racionalidades Modernas II – Em torno de Alberti e do Humanismo”, que teve lugar nos dias 15 a 19 de Abril de 2013 nas instalações do Museu da Ciência da Universidade de Coimbra, promovido pelo Centro de Estudos Sociais, bem como pelo Departamento de Arquitetura da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia desta Universidade, teve por objetivo debater, para além das categorias tradicionais da historiografia, as novas formas de racionalidade que a abordagem peculiar aos saberes dada por Alberti engendrou em todos os campos do conhecimento, sejam de natureza artística, técnica, moral, política e cultural, bem como aferir a sua influência até aos nossos dias. A ambição destes eventos foi justamente esta: investigar em que sentido a obra de Alberti pode-nos ajudar a pensar o mundo de hoje, nos dois lados do Atlântico, seja a partir dos textos escritos que concebeu, seja pe¬las obras que deixou como, ainda, pela realização de uma vida ativa e interventiva no quadro do primeiro Renascimento italiano, principalmente se tivermos em conta como os estudos humanísticos são entendidos atualmente.

Style and stylistic change are central issues in the study of art and architecture. Over the past hundred years various important theories of style and its changes have been proposed by scholars in a diversity of disciplines, from the historian Heinrich Wolfflin to the economist Herbert Simon. In this book, a new and innovative approach is developed that looks not only at traditional questions about stylistic change but also sets up a formal model through which to analyse change and to structure innovation. Styles are defined in terms of rule-based, compositional systems called shape grammars. Shape grammars have been used widely in recent years to describe a variety of styles in architecture, landscape design, painting and the decorative arts. As this book demonstrates, stylistic change is characterised in terms of different transformations of the grammars that define styles.
