A revelatory compilation of sketchbook pages from a protagonist of 1970s New York painting Nachume Miller (1949-98) was a German-born Israeli painter who became well known in the US after immigrating to New York City in 1974. Miller's first major exhibition was the Guggenheim's Young American Artists: 1978 Exxon National Exhibition(he was the youngest artist ever to present work at the museum); he also exhibited at Exit Art, MoMA and the E.M. Donahue Gallery. Throughout his career, Miller kept an almost daily record of his creative process. This monograph compiles pages from his sketchbooks spanning the years 1976 to 1998, and provides insight into his life, work and inventive practices. Meticulously dated, the sketchbooks are filled with plans and ideas for potential paintings, expressive watercolors and drawings, diary entries about family life, commentary on the art world, notes to himself and simple to-do lists.

Alfred Jacob Miller (1810-1874) was the first artist to journey into the heart of the Rocky Mountains. He did so as the commissioned expedition artist for William Drummond Stewart (1795-1871), a Scottish nobleman and veteran of a five-year hunting tour in America. Their destination would be the annual fur traders' rendezvous at Horse Creek, near the present-day border of Colorado and Wyoming. Miller, Stewart, and the rest of their party departed from Independence, Missouri, in mid-May 1837. They arrived at the rendezvous two months later and, after a week among the trappers and traders, headed into the Wind River Mountains to the source of the Green River. There, they spent the waning summer hunting moose and elk before returning to St. Louis in early October. Miller executed some one hundred watercolor and pen-and-ink sketches during the expedition, and he later reworked them into finished watercolors and oils for a variety of patrons. Over the past two decades, much valuable scholarship has emerged on how western American art has reflected American nationalist or expansionist ideologies. In Sentimental Journey: The Art of Alfred Jacob Miller, Lisa Strong takes a new approach, however, by examining how Miller tailored his western scenes to suit the specific needs and interests of local American audiences. She also crosses national boundaries to explore how Miller's paintings helped promote a vision of Scottish aristocratic identity.

I Stand, I Fall, a comprehensive survey of work by John Miller, coincides with the first American museum exhibition dedicated to the influential conceptual artist. Through almost 150 images, this catalogue comprehensively traces Miller's use of the figure throughout his career in order to incisively comment on the status of art and life in American culture. I Stand, I Fall, surveys Miller's use of the figure in order to examine themes of citizenship and politics, and the conventions of realism in contemporary art. Organized chronologically, the exhibition begins with his drawings and paintings from 1982-1983, the majority of which have never been presented publicly.
