Se abría, por tanto, un nuevo camino de esperanza que invitaba a la reflexión bioética y jurídica acerca de los límites de la investigación científica, de los deberes médicos y del poder de decisión de las familias afectadas.¿Debemos hacer todo aquello que sea técnicamente posible? ¿Cuáles son las consecuencias de seleccionar un embrión para cumplir un fin determinado en la vida? ¿Pueden manipularse los embriones con el argumento de que es necesario para salvar la vida de una persona enferma? ¿Acaso el Estado debe asumir el coste de estos tratamientos experimentales cuya eficacia es muy reducida? ¿Existe algún límite al poder de decisión de los padres sobre los aspectos relacionados con su reproducción? ¿Debemos tener en cuenta los posibles daños físicos y psicológicos para el “hermano salvador”? ¿Existe alguna repercusión para las generaciones futuras? ¿Es posible que el “bebé medicamento” sea el comienzo de un camino que nos lleve a los “niños de diseño”? ¿Estamos convirtiendo la reproducción asistida en una experiencia de consumo?El presente trabajo, que obtuvo el Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado de la UNED en 2017, pretende abordar éstas y otras cuestiones de forma amena mediante un acercamiento a los dilemas éticos y jurídicos asociados a la creación de un “bebé medicamento”.

These National Reports not only provide the backdrop to the authors' proposed model regulation appearing in Part 3, but serve as a key resource for scrutinising the most worrying incompatibilities in national laws on surrogacy. Part 2 of the book contains two contributions that provide international perspectives on cross-border surrogacy such as the 'human rights' perspective. Part 3 contains a General Report, which consists of an analysis of the National Reports appearing in Part 1, together with a proposed model of regulation of international surrogacy arrangements at the international level written by the two co-editors, Paul Beaumont and Katarina Trimmings.
