This groundbreaking work examines four avant-garde groups that emerged in Poland towards the end of World War I; the Poznan Expressionists, the Young Yiddish, the Formists, and the Futurists. It is the first extensive study to bring the four groups together, and in doing so it establishes interconnections between them, and discusses their work in light of socio-political and cultural currents in Poland and wider Europe in the interwar period.

In addition to highlighting particular national identities of artists, A Companion to Nineteenth-Century Art also puts the focus on other aspects of identity including individual, ethnic, gender, and religious. The text explores a wealth of relevant topics such as: the challenges the artists faced; how artists learned their craft and how they met clients; the circumstances that affected artist’s choices and the opportunities they encountered; and where the public and critics experienced art. This important text: Offers a comprehensive review of nineteenth-century art that covers the most pressing issues and significant artists of the era Covers a wealth of important topics such as: ethnic and gender identity, certain general trends in the nineteenth century, an overview of the art market during the period, and much more Presents novel and valuable insights into familiar works and their artists Written for students of art history and those studying the history of the nineteenth century, A Companion to Nineteenth-Century Art offers a comprehensive review of the first modern era art with contributions from noted experts in the field.

This collection of articles on Polish history after 1945 begins with a study of the reconstruction of Polish towns after the World War II, presenting how ideological images of the nation transformed the physical form of urban landscapes. The book devotes also a long part to individual identities, exploring the most intimate level of representation of consciousness: autobiographies of Polish immigrants into former German territories. The last two articles explore the identitarian adaptation of Polish anticommunist emigrants in Spain and the possibilities of dispute about Europe at the beginning of Communist regimes in Poland and Central Europe. The book puts problems of private identities in the context of European discourses, showing how politics are a part of individual lives, too.

Essays looking at heritage practices and the construction of the past, along with how they can be used to build a national identity. The preservation of architectural monuments has played a key role in the formation of national identities from the nineteenth century to the present. The task of maintaining the collective memories and ideas of a shared heritage often focused on the historic built environment as the most visible sign of a link with the past. The meaning of such monuments and sites has, however, often been the subject of keen dispute: whose heritage is being commemorated, by whom and for whom? The answers to such questions are not always straightforward, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, the recent history of which has been characterized by territorial disputes, the large-scale movement of peoples, and cultural dispossession. This volume considers the dilemmas presented by the recent and complex histories of European states such as Germany, Greece, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. Examining the effect ofthe destruction of buildings by war, the loss of territories, or the "unwanted" built heritage of the Communist and Nazi regimes, the contributors examine how architectural and urban sites have been created, destroyed, or transformed, in the attempt to make visible a national heritage. Matthew Rampley is Professor of History of Art at the University of Birmingham. Polish Encounters Russian Identity written by David L. Ransel and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-06-15 with History categories.

At a time when Poland is emphasizing its distance from Russia, Polish Encounters, Russian Identity points to the historical ties and mutual influences of these two great Slavic peoples. Whether Poland adopted a hostile or a friendly stance toward Russia, the intense responses of Russian thinkers, writers, and political leaders to Poland and to Polish culture shaped Russians' idea of themselves and their place in the world. Countering the recent trend to deny the rich interactions between Russia and Poland, this collection reminds readers that these longstanding, if often difficult, contacts constitute an important and enduring element in the consciousness of the peoples of both countries. The contributors are Manon de Courten, Megan Dixon, Halina Goldberg, Leonid Efremovich Gorizontov, Irina Grudzinska, Beth Holmgren, Judith Deutsch Kornblatt, Matthew Pauly, Nina Perlina, Robert Przygrodski, David L. Ransel, Bozena Shallcross, Barbara Skinner, and Andrzej Walicki.

Efektem dyskusji naukowej, którą zapoczątkowały studia i rozprawy zamieszczone w książce Sacrum w mieście – średniowiecze i wczesna epoka nowożytna.
