Essays looking at heritage practices and the construction of the past, along with how they can be used to build a national identity. The preservation of architectural monuments has played a key role in the formation of national identities from the nineteenth century to the present. The task of maintaining the collective memories and ideas of a shared heritage often focused on the historic built environment as the most visible sign of a link with the past. The meaning of such monuments and sites has, however, often been the subject of keen dispute: whose heritage is being commemorated, by whom and for whom? The answers to such questions are not always straightforward, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, the recent history of which has been characterized by territorial disputes, the large-scale movement of peoples, and cultural dispossession. This volume considers the dilemmas presented by the recent and complex histories of European states such as Germany, Greece, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. "Dwa przełomy. Sztuka polska po 1955 i 1989 roku" to próba opowieści o powojennej sztuce polskiej poprzez - z jednej strony - znaczące pominięcia i powody takich wykluczeń, a z drugiej - poprzez stopniowe ujawnianie się kontrowersyjnych zmian dotyczących sztuki i ścieranie się różnic. Daremna nostalgia za tym, co nie zostało wypowiedziane ze względu na polityczny konsensus zderza się w książce z olśnieniem wolnością i jej pluralizmem. To właśnie artystyczne utarczki często najdobitniej uświadamiały sztywne granice społecznych akceptacji, tak jak wcześniej - w okresie PRL-u - dotkliwy brak dyskursu tożsamościowego (m.in. feministycznego, gejowskiego) czy kompensacyjny charakter oficjalnej sztuki nowoczesnej wskazywał bezapelacyjnie i ostatecznie na dzieła, które mogą być uznane za sztukę. Konsensus odwilży 1955 roku i agon przełomu po 1989 roku ramują dwie narracje o sztuce polskiej: tego, co miało być niewidoczne i tego, co skandaliczne, wątpliwe i ambiwalentne.

Efektem dyskusji naukowej, którą zapoczątkowały studia i rozprawy zamieszczone w książce Sacrum w mieście – średniowiecze i wczesna epoka nowożytna. Wymiar religijny, kulturalny i społeczny, jest kolejny zbiór prac dotyczących epoki nowożytnej i czasów współczesnych. Podobnie jak w pierwszym tomie, dają się tu również zauważyć trzy główne nurty, które stały się inspiracją dla autorów niniejszych prac: są to aspekty religijne, kulturalne i społeczne. Warto również podkreślić, że tematyka poszczególnych artykułów ma charakter międzyreligijny: dotyka zarówno chrześcijaństwa, judaizmu, jak i islamu. Oczywiście większość z nich omawia miejsce sacrum w polskich miastach. Jak zauważył prof. Julian Dybiec, recenzent niniejszego tomu, „sacrum ujmowane jest tutaj w różnych kontekstach, czasami jako coś materialnego, rzeczywistego, namacalnego, innym razem jako coś duchowego, transcendentnego […].
