Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht im Bereich der germanisch-romanischen Sprachgrenze die sogenannten Namenpaare von Belgien, Nordfrankreich, Elsaß-Lothringen, Luxemburg und der Westschweiz, d.h. die Namen eines Ortes in zwei (oder mehr) verschiedenen Sprachen. Damit versucht sie, eine Lücke in der toponomastischen Forschung zu schließen, da bisher nahezu ausschließlich kleinräumig-partikuläre Untersuchungen zu Namenpaaren vorgelegt wurden. Im Zentrum der Arbeit steht der umfangreiche Katalog der Namenpaare, der aus methodischen Gründen auf die Namen Belgiens und der Westschweiz - mit Erstbeleg vor dem Jahr 1200 - beschränkt werden mußte. Im Gegensatz zu manch älterer Untersuchung werden die urkundlichen Belege der behandelten Namenpaare quellenkritisch untersucht und nach Original und Kopie geschieden. Jeder Namenartikel schließt darüber hinaus die kritische Überprüfung bisheriger Deutungen und Einordnung des Namenpaars in die erarbeitete Namenpaar-Typologie ein. Der Auswertungsteil wird von der typologischen, siedlungsgeschichtlichen und lautchronologischen Perspektive bestimmt. Die Untersuchung der Namenpaare zwischen Alpen und Ärmelkanal trägt somit zur Datierung von Sprachwandel (vor allem zur Lautchronologie) in zwei Sprachen, zur Sprachgrenzforschung und Siedlungsgeschichte im deutsch-französischen Grenzraum bei. Die Arbeit wurde 1994 mit dem Dr.-Eduard-Martin-Preis der Freunde der Universität des Saarlandes ausgezeichnet.

The Low Countries are famous for their radically changing landscape over the last 1,000 years. Like the landscape, the linguistic situation has also undergone major changes. In Holland, an early form of Frisian was spoken until, very roughly, 1100, and in parts of North Holland it disappeared even later. The hunt for traces of Frisian or Ingvaeonic in the dialects of the western Low Countries has been going on for around 150 years, but a synthesis of the available evidence has never appeared. The main aim of this book is to fill that gap. It follows the lead of many recent studies on the nature and effects of language contact situations in the past. The topic is approached from two different angles: Dutch dialectology, in all its geographic and diachronic variation, and comparative Germanic linguistics. In the end, the minute details and the bigger picture merge into one possible account of the early and high medieval processes that determined the make-up of western Dutch.

Setting out the historical national and religious characteristics of the Italians as they impact on the integration within the European Union, this study makes note of the two characteristics that have an adverse effect on Italian national identity: cleavages between north and south and the dominant role of family. It discusses how for Italians family loyalty is stronger than any other allegiance, including feelings towards their country, their nation, or the EU. Due to such subnational allegiances and values, this book notes that Italian civic society is weaker and engagement at the grass roots is less robust than one finds in other democracies, leaving politics in Italy largely in the hands of political parties. The work concludes by noting that EU membership, however, provides no magic bullet for Italy: it cannot change internal cleavages, the Italian worldview, and family values or the country’s mafia-dominated power matrix, and as a result, the underlying absence of fidelity to a shared polity—Italian or European—leave the country as ungovernable as ever.

Diese werden vor allem von der mitteleuropäischen Forschung traditionell als archäologische Hinterlassenschaften germanischer Stammesverbände angesehen, die sich im Zuge der Völkerwanderung in den ehemaligen Grenzregionen des Römischen Reichs an Rhein und Donau niedergelassen hätten. Die Arbeit zeigt die Wurzeln dieser Sichtweise im 19. Jahrhundert auf. Politische Bedeutung besaß die Erforschung der frühmittelalterlichen Friedhöfe besonders in der Zeit nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs sollte sie schließlich zur Rechtfertigung der nationalsozialistischen Expansionspolitik dienen. Die detaillierte Analyse der wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Zusammenhänge verdeutlicht nicht nur den Einfluss des politischen Kontextes auf die archäologischen Interpretationen, sondern eröffnet auch alternative Deutungsmöglichkeiten: Im letzten Teil der Arbeit wird ein Modell präsentiert, dass das Aufkommen der Reihengräberfelder als kulturelle Reaktion auf den Zusammenbruch der Gesellschaftsstruktur in den ehemaligen Grenzregionen des Römischen Reichs interpretiert.
