In this provocative history of parenting, Harry Hendrick analyses the social and economic reasons behind parenting trends. He shows how broader social changes, including neoliberalism, feminism, the collapse of the social-democratic ideal, and the 'new behaviourism', have led to the rise of the anxious and narcissistic parent. The book charts the shift from the liberal and progressive parenting styles of the 1940s-70s, to the more 'behavioural', punitive and managerial methods of childrearing today, made popular by 'experts' such as Gina Ford and Supernanny Jo Frost, and by New Labour's parent education programmes. This trend, Hendrick argues, is symptomatic of the sour, mean-spirited and vindictive social norms found throughout society today. It undermines the better instincts of parents and, therefore, damages parent-child relations. Instead, he proposes, parents should focus on understanding and helping their children as they work at growing up.

Were you raised by a narcissist? Are you still under the destructive hold of a narcissistic parent?Hundreds of thousands of people across the globe were raised by at least one narcissistic parent. You are not alone and you are not beyond help. At least six percent of the adult population in the United States has been diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The term narcissist is so often used to refer to an intimate partner relationship, but what happens when the narcissist has children? How is that dynamic similar or different to the intimate partner dynamic? Children of narcissists often continue the circle of trauma in their own adult lives by experiencing low self-worth and they are left believing that love is never unconditional. This can have a serious knock-on effect in their own personal relationships as well as when they become parents themselves. If you are a child of a narcissist, it is possible for you to heal from this. In Narcissistic Parents we will delve deeply into the dynamic that is created when a narcissist (or two) forms a family unit and has children. We will explore the root causes and available solutions for healing from narcissistic parenting. If you suspect that your mother or father has narcissistic tendencies, we will also help you to determine whether this is indeed true so that you can begin to piece together the puzzle of your difficult childhood. Inside Narcissistic Parents, you will discover: Whether you were, indeed, raised by a narcissist, and how to spot the signs A detailed understanding of narcissistic tendencies and Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) How to identify typical narcissistic behavior traits and tie that up with the emotional destruction left in the wake of a narcissist How gender plays a role in your experience of the narcissistic parent and how you can still have a relationship with that parent while protecting yourself How you can move forward, break the circle of pain and take back your power We also cover a variety of sub-topics related to narcissistic parenting and much more! Real-life examples will illustrate the topics in great detail and help you to apply emotional healing techniques in your own life. If you have felt alone in your struggle as the son or daughter of a narcissist, consider this book your connection to a community that is larger than you know. If you are ready to start healing and living your best life, Narcissistic Parents, is the resource for you!

About Relationship Parenting: Sometimes parents must pull rank and set down non-negotiable expectations and rules. However, if your child frequently misbehaves, it's time to evaluate your family's activities and home life. So many times, poor discipline is blamed for "problem" children, but the problems often originate when a child's needs are not met. During a child's life, the relationship his parents create with him should be based on bonding. Some call this process attachment parenting. It is actually Relationship Parenting. About the Author: Rick Sudsberry began his counseling work: after graduation from the University of Illinois at Springfield. Since 1972 he has provided help to individuals, couples and families. He has been married for 32 years and has two adult sons, Ryan and Chad. He has: Counseled for 29 years. Developed a private clinical practice focused on an attachment treatment approach for children and parents, as well as for couples. Published a chapter in the book Family Strengths IV, University of Nebraska Press; A program through Purdue University home extension service entitled "Marriage Enrichment for New Parents;" a Pre-marriage video Series called "Before the Vows," and has self published manuals "Leading Children Who Won't Follow" and "Relationship Parenting-Leading Children So They Will Follow."
