The wider cultural universe of contemporary Eveny is a specific and revealing subset of post-Soviet society. From an anthropological perspective, the author seeks to reveal not only the Eveny cultural universe but also the universe of the children and adolescents within this universe. The first full-length ethnographic study among the adolescence of Siberian indigenous peoples, it presents the young people’s narratives about their own future and shows how they form constructs of time, space, agency and personhood through the process of growing up and experiencing their social world. The study brings a new perspective to the anthropology of childhood and uncovers a quite unexpected dynamic in narrating and foreshadowing the future while relating it to cultural patterns of prediction and fulfillment in nomadic cosmology.

What does it mean to speak Sakha in the city? Words Like Birds, a linguistic ethnography of Sakha discourses and practices in urban far eastern Russia, examines the factors that have aided speakers in maintaining--and adapting--their minority language over the course of four hundred years of contact with Russian speakers and the federal power apparatus. Words Like Birds analyzes modern Sakha linguistic sensibilities and practices in the urban space of Yakutsk. Sakha is a north Siberian Turkic language spoken primarily in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) in the northeastern Russian Federation. For Sakha speakers, Russian colonization in the region inaugurated a tumultuous history in which their language was at times officially supported and promoted and at other times repressed and discouraged. Jenanne Ferguson explores the communicative norms that arose in response to the top-down promotion of the Russian language in the public sphere and reveals how Sakha ways of speaking became emplaced in villages and the city's private spheres. Focusing on the language ideologies and practices of urban bilingual Sakha-Russian speakers, Ferguson illuminates the changes that have taken place in the first two post-Soviet decades, in contexts where Russian speech and communicative norms dominated during the Soviet era. Weaving together three major themes--language ideologies and ontologies, language trajectories, and linguistic syncretism--this study reveals how Sakha speakers transform and adapt their beliefs, evaluations, and practices to revalorize a language, maintain and create a sense of belonging, and make their words heard in Sakha again in many domains of city life. Like the moveable spirited words, the focus of Words Like Birds is mobility, change, and flow, the tracing of the situation of bilinguals in Yakutsk.

The volumes of the "Fractured North" series address research collaborations in Siberia and the Russian North that are now at risk or frozen, and how partnerships might be restored, under the evolving political situation. The first two volumes explored ethical and moral dilemmas of continuing collaborative studies in the "fractured" North and the ramifications of ceasing such collaborations. While many scholars have pivoted their attention to other regions, others have maintained their focus on the Russian North, striving to sustain the circumpolar approach of the past decades. Contributions in this third volume deal with how we might move forward, despite the many fissures in our field. "Moving forward" includes a variety of approaches: adopting new(er) methodologies for carrying out studies from afar (e.g. netography); establishing new connection hubs at Western institutions; maintaining already established collaborations via joint meetings on "neutral" territory, and more. We anticipate that these volumes together will provide a record of the reflections, concerns, anguish, and inspirations of over fifty social scientists who chose the Russian North as their locus of research. We also dearly hope that it will serve as a historic account of a period of fracture that will before long heal.
