Diese Arbeit unternimmt den Versuch, am Beispiel von Positionen der AfD populistische Narrationsstrukturen im Hinblick auf das Thema "Klimawandel" herauszuarbeiten. Dies geschieht anhand diskurs- sowie narrationsanalytischer Ansätze, mittels derer versucht wird, die Geschichten und Erzählungen, die hinter der Diskussion stehen, zu analysieren und die Strukturen herauszuarbeiten, um das Phänomen Populismus auf kommunikativer Ebene exemplarisch greifbarer und verstehbarer zu machen. In einer zusehends unübersichtlichen, globalisierten Welt, scheint ein Bedürfnis nach einfachen Antworten auf grundsätzlich komplexe Fragen zu bestehen. Donald Trump, der Brexit sowie nationalistische und populistische Bewegungen in Europa stehen beispielhaft für eine Weise, jenes Bedürfnis zu bedienen, das unter dem Schlagwort "Populismus" subsumiert wird. Populisten bedienen sich einer bestimmten argumentativen Palette, die sich insbesondere aus einem proklamierten Gegensatz zwischen "Volk" und "Elite" oder dem "Eigenen" und dem "Fremden" speist sowie eine starke Emotionalisierung der Politik, insbesondere über sprachliche Mittel, betreibt. Auch der Klimawandel ist hier zum Feld populistischer Versuche Diskurse mitzubestimmen geworden, die mit vorwiegend "klimaskeptischen" Positionen aufwarten. In Deutschland geschieht dies leiser und bislang weniger wirkmächtig als etwa in den USA, wo mit Trump ein Präsident regiert, der den Klimawandel als ein wirtschaftspolitisches Kampfinstrument der Chinesen bezeichnete. Doch auch hierzulande werden ähnliche Stimmen lauter. Die Weltordnung westlicher Prägung, so scheint es, gerät zusehends von innen unter Druck.

Monsters, Catastrophes and the Anthropocene: A Postcolonial Critique explores European and Western imaginaries of natural disaster, mass migration and terrorism through a postcolonial inquiry into modern conceptions of monstrosity and catastrophe. This book uses established icons of popular visual culture in sci-fi, doomsday and horror films and TV series, as well as in images reproduced by the news media to help trace the genealogy of modern fears to ontologies and logics of the Anthropocene. By logics of the Anthropocene, the book refers to a set of principles based on ontologies of exploitation, extermination and natural resource exhaustion processes determining who is worthy of benefiting from value extraction and being saved from the catastrophe and who is expendable. Fears for the loss of isolation from the unworthy and the expendable are investigated here as originating anxieties against migrants’ invasions, terrorist attacks and planetary catastrophes, in a thread that weaves together re-emerging ‘past nightmares’ and future visions.
