The articles included in this collection cover a wide range of literatures and topics, but most of them address the ways in which ethnic writers create themselves in opposition and resistance to the mainstream. These narratives of opposition and resistance do not equate protest narratives but represent a consciously subversive effort. There is agency and creativity in the confrontation, for the majority of the these narratives are not only demystifying an old world and order but creating a new one; there narratives are not reproducing as much as producing and forging culture and literature. The articles we presente resist not only the politics of traditional canon formation but the politics of cultural nationalism as well; they challenge the margins as well as the center. With this revisionist agenda, the aim or this collection is to invite readers to further their rethinking of American and Caribbean literatures.

This book brings together multidisciplinary perspectives to explore how political values and acts of resistance impact the delivery of social justice in post-colonial states. Everyday life in post-colonial states, such as South Africa and Zimbabwe, is characterized by injustices that have both a historical and contemporary nature. From fishers in Cape Town accused of poaching, to residents of Bulawayo demanding access to water, this book focuses on the relationship between the state and groups that have been historically oppressed due to being on the margins of the political, economic and social system. It draws on empirical research from 12 scholars looking at cases in Brazil, India, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Chapters explore questions such as what citizens, especially those from marginalized groups, want from the state. The book looks at the political values of citizens and how these are formed in the process of engaging with the state and through everyday injustices. It also asks why and how citizens resist the state, with examples of protest, as well as less visible forms of resistance reflecting complex histories and power relations. Finally, the book explores how narratives and counter-narratives reveal the nature of political values and perceptions of what is just. Taken together these elements show the evolution of post-colonial social contracts. Examining important themes in political science, anthropology, sociology and urban geography, this book will appeal to scholars and students interested in political values, justice, social movements and resistance.

This exploration of women's autobiographical writings in the Americas focuses on three specific genres: testimonio, metafiction, and the family saga as the story of a nation. What makes Laura J. Beard’s work distinctive is her pairing of readings of life narratives by women from different countries and traditions. The Caribbean has played a crucial geopolitical role in the Western pursuit of economic dominance, yet Eurocentric research usually treats the Caribbean as a peripheral region, consequently labelling the inhabitants as beings without agency. Examining asymmetrical relations of power in the Greater Caribbean in historical and contemporary perspectives, this volume explores the region’s history of resistance and subversion of oppressive structures against the backdrop of the Caribbean’s central role for the accumulation of wealth of European and North American actors and the respective dialectics of modernity/coloniality, through a variety of experiences inducing migration, transnational exchange and transculturation. Narratives of Resistance in Everyday Lives and the COVID-19 Crisis brings together 21 global scholars of political narratives across five continents focused on the impact of the COVID-19 events on political societies. From Seoul to Stockholm the wave of sudden and dramatic changes in work, social life, political order, and bodily regulation affected pre-existing social forces and relations. This collection of chapters asks what changed, and with what degree of permanence? It explores which master/grand narratives retained their coherence, and which were called into question. Having established radical new protocols of social distancing, remote working and learning, masking, isolation, and quarantining, the reprint reveals the political and social possibilities that came to prominence and which ones were occluded. It questions what the prospects for a post-COVID-19 order might be. Monstrous textuality emerges when Gothic narratives like Frankenstein reflect the monstrous in their narrative structure to create narratives of resistance. It allows writers to meta-narratively reflect their own poetics and textual production, and reclaim authority over their work under circumstances of systemic cultural oppression and Othering. This book traces the representation of other Others through Black feminist hauntology in Toni Morrison’s Beloved (1987) and Love (2003); it explores fat freak embodiment as a feminist resistance strategy in Angela Carter’s Nights at the Circus (1984) and Margaret Atwood’s Lady Oracle (1976); and it reads Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy (2003–13) and Shelley Jackson’s Patchwork Girl (1995) within a framework of critical posthumanist and cyborg theory. The result is a comprehensive argument about how these texts can be read within a framework of critical posthumanist questioning of knowledge production, and of epistemological exploration, beyond the exclusionary humanist paradigm.
