This volume is the twelfth to date in a series of works in French or English presenting the epochs and movements of a Comparative History of Literatures in European Languages (Histoire Comparée des Littératures de Langues Européennes). The original intention of the editors was to publish a four-volume history of European literature from 1760-1820, and the first of these volumes, Des Lumières au Romantisme. Genres en Vers, appeared as long ago as 1982. The volumes Genres en Prose and Théâtre are still awaited. In their absence the present volume, Epoche im _berblick, attempts a more comprehensive and rigorous treatment of the period and its historiographical problems than was initially planned, providing the reader with an overview of sixty eventful years of European literary history years in which German Classicism coincided with the birth, initially in Germany and England, of Romanticism. "In the Penal Colony" ("In der Strafkolonie") (also translated as "In the Penal Settlement") is a short story by Franz Kafka written in German in October 1914, revised in November 1918, and first published in October 1919. The story is set in an unnamed penal colony. Internal clues and the setting on an island suggest Octave Mirbeau's The Torture Garden as an influence. As in some of Kafka's other writings, the narrator in this story seems detached from, or perhaps numbed by, events that one would normally expect to be registered with horror. "In the Penal Colony" describes the last use of an elaborate torture and execution device that carves the sentence of the condemned prisoner on his skin before letting him die, all in the course of twelve hours. As the plot unfolds, the reader learns more and more about the machine, including its origin and original justification. "In der Strafkolonie" ist eine Erzählung von Franz Kafka, die im Oktober 1914 entstand und 1919 veröffentlicht wurde. Einem Forschungsreisenden wird das Rechtssystem einer Strafkolonie vorgeführt. Es besteht darin, dass jeder Angeklagte unabhängig von seiner Schuld oder Unschuld von einem Apparat in minutiösem Ablauf stundenlang gefoltert und dann getötet wird. Den Apparat beschreibt Kafka als überdimensionalen Parlographen in der Funktionsweise eines Phonographen mit vibrierender Metallplatte und Nadel. Dieser Apparat ist der Hauptgegenstand der Erzählung, er repräsentiert die "Einheit von Schrift und Tod, von Ekstase und Thanatos".

In diesem Fall würde Christian sehr wahrscheinlich versetzt werden, was ein Problem darstellt, denn mehr noch als den lieben Gott liebt er seine heimliche Freundin Maren - die nicht bereit wäre, Wohnort und Job für eine ungewisse Zukunft zu opfern.Als Christian seiner heimlichen Verehrerin, der Rentnerin Edith, sein Leid klagt, erzählt sie ihm von einer Gemeinde, der es gelungen sein soll, mit Hilfe von Werbung ihre Kirche wieder zu füllen. Der Pfarrer reagiert zunächst skeptisch auf den Vorschlag, aber ihm wird schnell klar, dass er zu ungewöhnlichen Mitteln greifen muss, wenn er die Jugend erreichen und seine Kirche retten will. Also beauftragt er den kreativen, aber egozentrischen und bis dato eher erfolglosen PR-Berater Markus Schlächter zunächst mit dem Entwurf eines simplen Flyers - und tatsächlich kann Christian beim folgenden Gottesdienst mehrere neue und vor allem junge Gläubige begrüßen.Während Edith damit zufrieden zu sein scheint, hat Christian Blut geleckt und bittet Markus um eine Ausweitung der Werbekampagne. Markus erkennt langsam das Potential, das darin steckt, Werbung für eine Kirche zu machen, und bietet Christian seine kostenlose Unterstützung an - unter der Voraussetzung, dass der ihm freie Hand lässt. Und damit nimmt das Schicksal seinen Lauf...
