This National Classification System for Contaminated Sites is a method for evaluating contaminated sites according to their current or potential adverse impact on human health and the environment. The system was developed based on a review of existing provincial, territorial, and international methods for classifying contaminated sites and a review of the availability of Canadian contaminated site information. The system uses an additive numerical method that assigns scores to contaminant characteristics, exposure pathways, and receptors.
