For Peter Fox, being a bowling alley proprietor was a calling. Right from the beginning, the Upstate New York village of Koopersville embraced Peter's glistening new bowling alley with its modern automatic pinsetters, and Koopersville Bowl quickly became the heart and soul of the village. Peter's dream business opened in 1962, and year after year, the bowling alley was the place where the trials and tribulations of growing up in a small New England town were transformed into the dreams and hopes of the future. Anything was possible at Koopersville Bowl. But one day Peter Fox died, and the village stopped breathing. The moral fabric of the entire community broke, yet Peter's extended family tried to adjust to their loss. As Peter's eldest son, Paul Fox knew it was his duty to help his mother carry on; what's more, it was what his father would have wanted. And that's exactly what he did. Even so, sometimes unexpected things do happen. In the game of bowling there is only one way to salvage your score, and that is to throw strikes. Perfect games are hard to come by. But in life, as Paul soon finds out, there are always new beginnings, new games to be played, and old memories that can never be taken away.

Anthropologist Ann Anagnost explores the fashioning and refashioning of modern Chinese subjectivity as it relates to the body of the nation. Using interviews and participant observation as well as close readings of official documents and propaganda materials, and popular media, Anagnost notes discontinuities in the nation's self-description--as though redefined at critical junctures in recent history. National Service (NS) is one of Singapore's foundational national defence policies. First introduced by the British in 1954, amended in 1967 to provide a means to defend a fledgling independent nation, and codified into its present form in 1970, NS is deeply woven into Singapore's political and social fabric. The 50th anniversary of the enlistment of the first batch of full-time National Servicemen (NSmen) is an opportune time to contemplate the past, present and future of NS. This volume brings together a range of perspectives on NS in Singapore. It covers three main areas: The history of NS, NS in practice, and international perspectives. Comprising chapters by individuals with varied backgrounds, National Service in Singapore hopes to offer a broad account of one of Singapore's fundamental public policies.

National Pastimes written by Katharina Bonzel and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with Social Science categories.

Sports have long fascinated filmmakers from Hollywood and beyond, from Bend It Like Beckham to Chariots of Fire to Rocky. Though sports films are diverse in their approach, style, and storytelling modes, National Pastimes discloses the common emotional and visual cues that belie each sports film’s underlying nationalistic impulses. Katharina Bonzel unravels the delicate matrix of national identity, sports, and emotion through the lens of popular sports films in comparative national contexts, demonstrating in the process how popular culture provides a powerful vehicle for the development and maintenance of identities of place across a range of national cinemas. As films reflect the ways in which myths of nation and national belonging change over time, they are implicated in important historical moments, from Cold War America to the class dynamics of 1980s Thatcherite Britain to the fragmented sense of nation in post-unification Germany. Bonzel shows how sports films provide a means for renegotiating the boundaries of national identity in an accessible, engaging form. National Pastimes opens up new ways of understanding how films appeal to the emotions, using myth-like constructions of the past to cultivate spectators’ engagement with historical events.

Understanding Earth S Deep Past written by National Research Council and has been published by National Academies Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-02 with Science categories.

There is little dispute within the scientific community that humans are changing Earth's climate on a decadal to century time-scale. By the end of this century, without a reduction in emissions, atmospheric CO2 is projected to increase to levels that Earth has not experienced for more than 30 million years. As greenhouse gas emissions propel Earth toward a warmer climate state, an improved understanding of climate dynamics in warm environments is needed to inform public policy decisions. In Understanding Earth's Deep Past, the National Research Council reports that rocks and sediments that are millions of years old hold clues to how the Earth's future climate would respond in an environment with high levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases. Understanding Earth's Deep Past provides an assessment of both the demonstrated and underdeveloped potential of the deep-time geologic record to inform us about the dynamics of the global climate system. The report describes past climate changes, and discusses potential impacts of high levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases on regional climates, water resources, marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and the cycling of life-sustaining elements. While revealing gaps in scientific knowledge of past climate states, the report highlights a range of high priority research issues with potential for major advances in the scientific understanding of climate processes. This proposed integrated, deep-time climate research program would study how climate responded over Earth's different climate states, examine how climate responds to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, and clarify the processes that lead to anomalously warm polar and tropical regions and the impact on marine and terrestrial life. In addition to outlining a research agenda, Understanding Earth's Deep Past proposes an implementation strategy that will be an invaluable resource to decision-makers in the field, as well as the research community, advocacy organizations, government agencies, and college professors and students.
