Originally published in German, Erika Thurner's National Socialism and Gypsies in Austria is the ground-breaking study of Nazi policy toward Gypsies during the Third Reich. As noted in the foreword, although Jews were the major target of the Nazis, others were also marked for extermination. Indeed, of the groups targeted by the Nazis, only Jews and Gypsies were killed indiscriminately and tribally, that is, by the gassing of entire family groups of men, women, and children. Of the eleven thousand Gypsies living in Austria at the start of the war, only three thousand survived Nazi persecution. In the first English translation of this important work, Gilya Gerda Schmidt makes available Thurner's investigation of Camps Salzburg and Lackenbach, the two central areas of Gypsy persecution in Austria. This English translation has also been expanded, with a new study of Camp Salzburg, an updated bibliography, and numerous photographs, which were not included in the German edition.

Conquering The Past written by F. Parkinson and has been published by Wayne State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989 with History categories.

"The history of National Socialism in Austria has not been widely examined. It was not until 1981 that an English language history was available on the "forgotten Nazis" in Austria, yet the country was well known to have been a breeding ground of Nazism. Editor F. Parkinson assembled a group of historians and political scientists to undertake a scholarly inquiry into all ramifications of Nazism in Austria before and after the Anschluss. They investigated the activities and attitudes of those in power as well as those in all other segments of the population, whether in Vienna or in the provinces, whether organized in political parties or professing certain creeds. Contributors outline Austria's political decline during the last half of the nineteenth century, Austrian inability to restore the monarchist system during the first republic, the slide of conservatives and socialists to National Socialism, reactions to National Socialism between 1938 and 1945, and the reconstruction of republicanism since 1945, with its emphasis on political conservatism. Solicited to mark the anniversary of the Anschluss, the essays in this volume will be of interest to specialists in Austrian history, students of the Holocaust and Nazi period, and historians of modern Central and Eastern Europe." The Roma A Minority In Europe written by Roni Stauber and has been published by Central European University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-01-01 with Social Science categories.

The situation of the Roma in Europe, especially in the former communist states, is one of the more important human rights issues on the agenda of the international community, especially in the Euro-Atlantic bodies of integration. Within European states that have Roma populations there is a growing awareness that the matter must be confronted, and that there is a need for a concentrated effort to solve social problems and ease tensions between the Roma and the European nations among which they dwell. This volume is the result of an international conference held at Tel Aviv University in December 2002. The conference, one of the largest held among the academic community in the last decade, served as a unique forum for a multidisciplinary discussion on the past and present of the Roma in which both Roma and non-Roma scholars from various countries engaged.

The Nazi Genocide Of The Roma written by Anton Weiss-Wendt and has been published by Berghahn Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-01 with History categories.

Using the framework of genocide, this volume analyzes the patterns of persecution of the Roma in Nazi-dominated Europe. Detailed case studies of France, Austria, Romania, Croatia, Ukraine, and Russia generate a critical mass of evidence that indicates criminal intent on the part of the Nazi regime to destroy the Roma as a distinct group. Other chapters examine the failure of the West German State to deliver justice, the Romani collective memory of the genocide, and the current political and historical debates. As this revealing volume shows, however inconsistent or geographically limited, over time, the mass murder acquired a systematic character and came to include ever larger segments of the Romani population regardless of the social status of individual members of the community.

This book of interdisciplinary readings on Gypsies is sensitive to the Romani point of view and avoids exoticizing or patronizing the Gypsies and their culture. Recurrent themes in the readings include: the historical oppression of the Gypsies including contemporary xenophobia and violence; the nonstatic, heterogeneous nature of Gypsy cultures; the persistence of racist stereotypes; and personal and institutional Gypsy/non-Gypsy relationships. Nearly all of the classic essays updated for this volume tell stories of the persistance of the Roma in the face of savage atrocities and appalling living conditions.
