History education, by nature, transmits an ‘official’ version of national identity. National identity is not a fixed entity, and controversy over history teaching is an essential part of the process of redefining and regenerating the nation. France and the United States have in particular experienced demographic and cultural shifts since the 1960s that have resulted in intense debates over national identity. This volume examines how each country’s national history is represented in primary schools’ social studies textbooks and curricula, and how they handle contemporary issues of ethnicity, diversity, gender, socio-economic inequality, and patriotism. By analyzing each country separately and comparatively, it demonstrates how various groups (including academics, politicians and citizen activists) have influenced education, and how the process of writing and rewriting history perpetuates a nation. Drawing on empirical studies of the United States and France, this volume provides insight into broader nationalist processes and instructive principles for similar countries in the modern world.

This book analyses the relationship between history education and nationalism in the context of the dominant structures of collective memory in Poland. Drawing on original qualitative research with history teachers, it explores the ways in which teachers understand the aims of history teaching and how they teach history, with some contesting or negotiating official and hegemonic nationalist memory projects, while others predominantly reproduce or radicalise them. A study of teachers’ tendencies to approach history through the prism of nationalism, this study reveals a view of history lessons as a means of instilling national identity in students, as the past is constructed in nationalist terms and no contradiction is identified in viewing history as both an objective science and a ‘nationalising’ tool. An examination of the means by which a dominant nationalist discourse is reinforced through historical education, Teaching History, Celebrating Nationalism will appeal to scholars of sociology and education with interests in nationalism and memory studies.

Excerpt from Nationalism and Education: Since 1789, a Social and Political History of Modern Education In the large view, education is public policy, related inseparably to economic conditions, social organization, and political administration. The educator who would wisely plan the activities and the management of the schools, must pay attention to the major conditions of life outside the schools, and must be able to evaluate educational procedure in terms of far-reaching and broadly inclusive social purpose. No less must the statesman who would build a just, efficient, prosperous, and patriotic nation, enlist the schools in his efforts and utilize them to effect his aims. Up to the outbreak of the World War, the pre-eminent importance of education as a phase of public policy had not been so clearly recognized in the United States as in some other great nations of the world. We had believed in the schools and had been generous in supporting them, but as a nation we had not concerned ourselves very actively with educational policies. The war has considerably changed this attitude, and we suddenly find citizens and legislatures making all kinds of demands upon the school system. Since many of the proposals that are being made among us have been exemplified in the school systems of other nations, it might be well for us, before undertaking any radical reorganization of the spirit and method of American public education, to find out what has resulted from the application of similar policies in other countries.
