Historian Wallace Stegner characterized America’s National Park system as “the best idea we ever had.” One can quibble with that, but, indeed, it was a pretty good idea! This book specifically is a guide and a celebration of 30 of those national parks, national historical parks, and national monuments that, each in its own way, reveals the histories and cultures of America’s first inhabitants, the Native Americans. Its pages will take you to: great mounds in Ohio where the dead were laid to rest in sumptuous splendor 2,000 years ago a place in Iowa where 1,000 years ago, Native Americans sculpted earth into the forms of giant bears and birds a quarry in Minnesota where Native People have, for hundreds of years, extracted blood-red stone for their ceremonial pipes the remains of a village in North Dakota visited by Lewis and Clark in the early 1800s and the home of their guide Sacagewea truly breathtaking, more than 700-year-old cliff dwellings in Arizona and Colorado, that will astonish you in their ethereal beauty and architectural ingenuity phantasmagorical images of 7-foot-tall, wide-eyed spirit beings in Utah painted more than 1,000 years ago And many more. All of these sites have in common the fact that, at the insistence of Native and non-Native people, men and women, the federal government of the United States set them aside as places to preserve, study, and revere as part of the American story no matter where your ancestors came from, how they got here, or how long ago. Read this book and visit the historically sacred sites enshrined in our national parks, national historical parks, and national monuments, places that reveal the creativity and genius of the Native People of North America. With 180 color photographs and complete visitor information, this is a wonderful guide to Native American archaeology in our national parks and monuments.

Since 1978 Daniel B. Reibel's Registration Methods for the Small Museum has been the definitive guide to registration methodology. Long considered an indispensable reference tool by historians and archivists, this new third edition covers topics of increasing significance, such as the new accessibility of computers and the ways in which small museums can actively employ this technology with new registration software. Reibel's considerations of technology and its implications for the small museum excellently supplement the content which originally made this text a classic - an authoritative and comprehensive discussion of effective registration techniques for the small museum presented in a concise, readable manner with sample registrar's manuals forms for immediate use.

An established Native American settlement as early as 1200 CE, Werowocomoco--located in Gloucester County, Virginia, along the York River--was a secular and sacred seat of power of the present-day Virginia's Algonquian people, whom the English would call the "Powhatan." The site was rediscovered in 2003. Only about 1 percent of the 50-acre site has been investigated; however, based on archaeological research conducted so far, it appears to be an unprecedented archaeological find for the eastern coastal region of the nation, and its significance to Virginia Indians today and our shared history is without parallel. Generously illustrated and informed by recent scholarship, this latest addition to the National Park Service Handbook series is an engaging and concise history of the site, its rediscovery, and what recent archaeology tells us about Werowocomoco. Distributed for the National Park Service in association with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources

Working Together written by Kurt E. Dongoske and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with History categories.

Working Together focuses on one of the most important topics in archaeology today: the cooperative initiatives and issues involving Native Americans and archaeologists. This volume is an invaluable resource for readers and scholars who want to gain insight into the complex relationship between archaeologists and Native Americans. Working Together originated as an innovative and popular column in the Society for American Archaeology's SAA Bulletin in 1993. This column became a dynamic forum in which both archaeologists and Native Americans could voice their concerns and thoughts on a very sensitive topic. With many of these articles reproduced in this volume, readers will have access to a diverse selection of case studies from several North American regions. Although the authors express diverse and sometimes contradictory viewpoints, three consistent themes emerge: first, archaeologists must be willing to break with established archaeological practice and to approach the discipline with an open mind; second, archaeologists and Native Americans must cultivate a reciprocity of exchange, in both an intellectual and political sense; and finally, Native Americans and archaeologists must work together to build project-specific coalitions.

Indian Mounds Of Wisconsin written by Robert A. Birmingham and has been published by Univ of Wisconsin Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-10-16 with History categories.

Annotation More mounds were built by ancient Native American societies in Wisconsin than in any other region of North America -- between 15,000 and 20,000 mounds, at least 4,000 of which remain today. Most impressive are the effigy mounds, huge earthworks sculpted into the shapes of birds, animals, and other forms, not found anywhere else in the world in such concentrations. This book, written for general readers but incorporating the most recent research, offers a comprehensive overview of these intriguing earthworks and answers the questions, Who built the mounds? When and why were they built?Using evidence drawn from archaeology, ethnography, ethnohistory, linguistics, and the traditions and beliefs of present-day Native Americans in the Midwest, archaeologists Birmingham and Eisenberg offer an important new interpretation of the effigy mound groups as "cosmological maps" that model ancient belief systems and social relations. Although the archaeological record indicates that most ancient Native American societies in the upper Midwest built mounds between about 800 B.C. and A.D. 1200, the effigy mounds bear such similarity to the beliefs and clan structures of the Ho-Chunk, Ioway, and closely related nations that it is extremely likely that these people are descendants of the effigy mound builders. Indian Mounds of Wisconsin includes a travel guide to sites in Wisconsin that can be visited by the public, including many in state, county, and local parks.
