This book is a dramatic reconstruction of the life stories of 3 Native Americans chiefs who lived on the American frontier in the 19 th century. It gives a view of history that comes from the perspective of the Native American peoples. The narratives revolve around 3 giants of history, Sitting Bul, Chief Joseph and Geronimo who belonged to the Indian tribes of the American West that roamed on the Plains since their origins. They had signed treaties with the US Government/ the Great Father in Washington but which had been infringed by the settlers driven by the greed of appropriating the land that belonged collectively to the Indigenous peoples. The journey on the frontier to escape the Cavalry which was trying to subdue the Native Americans was arduous, prolonged and dramatic.

Sovereign Bones is an exploration of indigenous peoples and how they have managed to maintain separate identities, in spite of their assimilation into the broader American culture. Edited by Eric Gansworth, this collection of original writing focuses on the key role that writers and visual artists have played in the struggle of native peoples to retain their individual identities. In personal essays, memoir, and historical reflections, each writer explores the ways in which they arrived at their work and how they have retained a traditional way of life in that work. Taken as a whole, Sovereign Bones is a testimony to the resilience of indigenous cultures and the integral contributions artists make to that survival. Featured authors include: Marijo Moore, Louise Erdrich, Alex Jacobs, Heid Erdrich, Maurice Kenny, Diane Glancy, Jeanette Weaskus, Simon Ortiz.

Just as a basket’s purpose determines its materials, weave, and shape, so too is the purpose of the essay related to its material, weave, and shape. Editors Elissa Washuta and Theresa Warburton ground this anthology of essays by Native writers in the formal art of basket weaving. Using weaving techniques such as coiling and plaiting as organizing themes, the editors have curated an exciting collection of imaginative, world-making lyric essays by twenty-seven contemporary Native writers from tribal nations across Turtle Island into a well-crafted basket. Shapes of Native Nonfiction features a dynamic combination of established and emerging Native writers, including Stephen Graham Jones, Deborah Miranda, Terese Marie Mailhot, Billy-Ray Belcourt, Eden Robinson, and Kim TallBear. Their ambitious, creative, and visionary work with genre and form demonstrate the slippery, shape-changing possibilities of Native stories. Considered together, they offer responses to broader questions of materiality, orality, spatiality, and temporality that continue to animate the study and practice of distinct Native literary traditions in North America.

Native American Mythology began long before the European settlers arrived on North American soil. The most popular of these myths usually are the ones dealing with Creation and Origins of people, places and things. These myths deal with both how the physical world as we know it came to be and how the many features of specific cultures originated. They cover areas of gods and man and why we were separated, where did the different races come from, and when did evil surface. Being there were so many different tribes with countless beliefs and customs, the only way to understand these beliefs is through understanding the Native American stories. In this book there is a wide landscape of different tribes that present a true look at these beliefs. Among the stories included in this anthology are: Creation of the First Indians, Creation of the Red and White Races, In the Beginning, How the Great Chiefs Made the Moon and the Sun, Origin of Fire, The First Moccasins, The Origin of Game and of Corn, The Origin of Medicine, The Origin of Summer and Winter, Origin of the Animals, Origin of the Buffalo, Origin of the Clans, Origin of the Sweat Lodge, The Origin of the Winds, The Origin of Yosemite, The Origin of Earth, Origin of the Lakota Peace Pipe, How the World Was Made, The First Fire, Origin of the Pleiades And the Pine, and many more.

The book combines both an entertainment and educational medium. The poems capture the imagination by the vivid detail of the collapsing frontier. The heterogeneous 'Indian' tribes held on their ideals and the literary angle draws from the idioms common to Native Americans in the 19th century and their laconic style of delivery forever stays in memory. The use of the metaphor in the speech allows the natural eloquence to flow through the text and informs the reader of an era when colonialism had reached its zenith and resistance to an advancing and materialist civilization was nearing its end. The educational strength is that it brings into focus an anthropological study that informs about the framework of the Native societies. The book is linguistically sound, has a clear expression and its scope on the research in humanities is considerable. This will contribute to the analysis of non-agrarian, hunter-gatherer and sedentary societies and the rationale for their existence. It conveys their attachment to land and presents it with authenticity which will assist in other research such as dependence on the orational stories as admissible evidence, geographical mapping and ecological protection.
