"Even after the end of modernism and postmodernism, the grandiose fantasies of artifice and self-reference that have informed so much modernist literature still resonate in the "social constructivism" of current literary and cultural theory: in the idea that we can perform or construct "identities" or social roles without external constraint, as if we had consumer choice of self. Larson Powell's book posits nature as a limit to such fantasies, redefining aesthetic modernity's conception of and relation to nature and therefore its relation to reality. He shows how nature, no longer the idealized, maternally coded Utopia of the Romantics, becomes the trace of specific political, sexual, and technological traumas. The book's four chapters center on the representation of nature in German prose and-especially-poetry by Rainer Maria Rilke, Gottfried Benn, Bertolt Brecht, and Alfred Doblin from the years 1900 to 1945, while making reference to other literatures as well." "Powell's term "the Technological Unconscious" refers to a point of intersection between psychoanalysis and social and scientific theories of modernism and also to the philosophical mediation between history and nature, a motif important from Kant to Adorno. Interest in Johannes Bobrowski (1917-1965) has suffered from an impression of the complexity of his works and of the narrowness of his focus: on 'The Germans and their Eastern European neighbours'. The current study re-examines aspects of Bobrowski's 'Sarmatian' works, especially their chronological development, but places them within the wider context of the whole of his oeuvre. It looks at the long period of development before he discovered his 'theme' in the early 1950s and examines his development after Sarmatische Zeit and Schattenland Ströme, seeing the volume Wetterzeichen as moving increasingly away from the past and towards more contemporary issues. His short stories and novels are related to the issues confronting him in East Germany and develop increasingly into responses to immediate poetic and social problems. Far from being a remote and backward orientated 'Sarmatian', Bobrowski emerges as a writer attempting to communicate with a society which, he felt, threatened to ignore basic human needs and aspirations. The study makes use of material from Bobrowski's Nachlaß to present a figure looking for and offering patterns for orientation in his East German society, but with renewed relevance for post-unification Germany.

Schiller und Hölderlin gehören um 1800 zu einer Gruppe von Autoren, die ihre literarästhetische Position in Abgrenzung zur zeitgenössischen Philosophie bestimmen. Sie grenzen die ästhetische Erfahrung vom theoretischen Zugriff der Philosophie ab und rücken die Fähigkeit der Dichtung, abstraktes Denken darstellen zu können, in den Mittelpunkt ihrer Überlegungen. Die Überzeugung, Kunst und insbesondere Literatur könne aufgrund ihrer Darstellungsqualität eindringlicher auf den Rezipienten wirken als abstrakte Argumentation, hat Konsequenzen für die Auswahl der dargestellten Themen, die formale Gestaltung der literarischen Texte und die Aneignung von Gattungstraditionen. Ausgehend von einer vergleichbaren Argumentationsfigur wenden Schiller und Hölderlin unterschiedliche Mittel an, um spekulative Gedankengebäude in literarische Sprachformen zu übersetzen. Die vorliegende Arbeit rekonstruiert die leitenden theoretischen Positionen beider Autoren und untersucht anhand exemplarischer literarischer Beispiele – Schillers „Die Jungfrau von Orleans“ und Hölderlins Elegien – den Zusammenhang zwischen ästhetischer Reflexion und literarischer Darstellung.
